They look ok under the lights but they always look really sickly under normal light even when they are healthy. I would rather get an opal or pearlescent colored betta that looks amazing in any light condition.

From me personally owing a glow betta she got really lively once she got comfortable in her new tank and also about 2-3 weeks after feeding her she grew to the size of a female betta I think they have a bad reputation and just need a good tank,some good food , and love 🐠 💕

@@rootsnwhiskers8351 I went to PetSmart today to get my first betta after doing a lot of research from your videos. The only bettas they had in-stock were the glo-fish, and they told me they wouldn't be restocking bettas until after the Cornavirus. I went with one of the glo-fish because I was ready to finally get a little guy for my 10g tank. Is there a particular reason you do not like glo-fish, and why I should avoid them in the future. I definitely would have preferred a more vibrant multicolored betta but this was the best I could do given the circumstance.

@@Monica_bondevik, their genes are altered so they can be glow betta fish, it can be classified as cruelty to animals because there’s no need to do that, but in my personal opinion, they also deserve to live. It’s not like they wanted to be altered or something. My female glow betta has been doing good, she is pretty active and lovely, I really enjoy having her. I got her at the beginning of the year and she’s still doing fine.

Hannan Irina: Funny that you said that. Last Fall I saved 2 sweet bettas from those little petsmart cups. I have them in a 15G with a black divider. One of them was scared at first - he wasn’t used to so much room with substrate, live plants, driftwood, and warm water. He freaked out and hid for about 15 minutes. But once he ventured out, he started swimming all over, through the plants, and by the next day both were building bubble nests - that’s how happy they were. I have a 20G long that I’m setting up with 2 dividers so I can have 3 more. I’m switching from gravel to sand - I like the look better - ironically, I bought some blue glow stones and the new Fluval LED lights with settings for sunrise, etc. which has a blue light. All I need are the fish - and one will definitely be white!

I don't think I'll ever purchase a domestic Betta, knowing how physically and genetically messed up they are, especially the long fin varieties. I'd much rather purchase a captive bred wild-type Betta from a reputable breeder, such as Frank'sBettas. No disrespect to anyone that purchases domestic Bettas, it's just my own personal choice.

The thing about glofish is that they weren't originally made to sell to kids. They were made to see if we can insert genes into an animals DNA. They picked glowing because its a quick and easy to spot modification. The studies that gave us glofish are just the first step in the process of putting an end to genetic defects and also seeing if we can replace genes that leade to higher chances of disease and cancer. Thats why I love glofish as an adult, because its the first step to making the world a better place.

What's funny is I work as an aquatic specialist at a petco and I put dalmation mollies, blind cave tets, albino tiger barbs etc in with the glofish to show the fact that if you like the glow esthetic, you don't need to buy glofish -- you just need a blue light. And the first thing I did when we got our globetta display was pull white opals and butterflies that had the white splotches and put them under the blue light and omgwow they glow! I recommend this channel's videos to my custys all the time. Keep posting please I love it

@@butkusfan23 ✋ Yep. I ask every costumer what size tank we're working with and if it's not correct for the fish I refuse the sale. And I work at PetSmart. People come in wanting to put bala sharks into a 55 gallon tank and koi fish in a 10 gallon. Or put guppies and cory cats into a 2 gallon tank for a betta when it's already not the correct size for the betta alone. All that stuff just happened this week. And some days it's emotionally hard and exhausting because people don't care and just yell at you for doing the right thing. So, there are some people who work in these company stores that know what they're doing and care very much. We're out there.

I'm also an aquatics specialist for Petco. It's only been three months but I'm learning alot. Tank maintenance tomorrow. Ha ha. I just put a betta edge light in my room and I'm loving it. I have an empty 29 gallon in my room because I need a proper stand for it and basically HAD to get this really pretty platinum dragon male. I'll probably just keep building tanks in my room until I start my 29 gallon. I don't regret buying either though.

This is such a fantastic betta tank, thanks for taking the high road. Bettas are selectively bred for all types of color variations and features, but the idea of mixing jellyfish DNA with betta fish DNA sounds dangerous. I would rather spend my dollars on a quality betta fish than pay triple price for a lesser-quality betta fish that glows but might suffer from health issues from the added DNA. Bettas like the dimmer lights and I bet it feels so cozy with the black background & substrate. I could see this working for a 20 gallon with a trio of silver mollies. I’d probably get black sand instead of black gravel cause I hate vacuuming gravel and opt for a sponge filter with a low-flow air pump since the Aqueon HOBs aren’t equipped to handle sand.

I agree I love my Glo-fish and you can still enjoy glo-fish without using the blue light all the time. I have my glo-fish on white lights for a couple of hours through out the day and then at night I change it to blue for a little before I head to bed. I can say I have never had any fish health problems with my glo-fish either.

@@rootsnwhiskers8351 I actually have my Betta set up in a 10 gallon glow tank as well, he is a beautiful metallic copper dragon scale with a small group of ottocats as his tank mates and a Rosy barb fry(just temporary until its bigger enough that it can't be eaten). My Betta has diamond eyes and is blind and as such is very docile. I have a floating ring for his food and it only took him 3 days to learn that's where he comes to get his food. Even though I know how smart fish are it always amazes me how quick they pick things up.

My lady works at petsmart, and when they came to her store she already knew I was going to be hopping mad. We humans genetically modify our animal friends to the point where it hurts them. When I first heard of scientists playing around with the glow effect on fish back in the early 2010s, it made me sad. What is the point of this? For fun? A gimmick? Why? Oh God why? Everything I go to her store the glow bettas are always stocked, so I don't think they are selling. Good. Even my lady thought this was going too far. She usually would refer the customers to other bettas. We got to stop playing with nature and just appreciate what we have already. I mean... look at the bettas we have already. They are gorgeous! By the way, your tank came out absolutely beautiful. This is such an amazing alternative of the glow tanks. It gives it a mysterious vibe to it instead of that weird, ultra neon blinding setting. I feel this will make the betta feel comfortable. Something about having a black light shine on your eyes seems just... uncomfortable. This though? Reminds me of a soft moon light night. Gorgeous.

I love this video. I've been on the fence about glow Bettas and fish. I was considering one just because I feel sorry for the little fellas but buying them feels like it would make the problem worse. But this was a great idea and I truly enjoyed and appreciated it. My grandchildren got a 5 gallon glo tank.. I wish it had been a 10gallon (that's why the tanks been sitting for a month) but it's for a very small space and they don't understand why I don't want to do the whole glo fish thing!! I absolutely love the White bettas and he looked absolutely amazing in your tank!! So today we may take a trip out and see what kind of fun decorations we can find and utilize a few live plants. Ultimately it has to be in the best interest for the little fish and I was excited to see your take on it!! God bless you guys!

Get some of plants and caves. Also get him some friends, contrary to popular belief you can put bettas in with tetras, Cory catfish, ottos, or danios and they will get along fine. For a 10 gallon I would recommend a few ottos in with him or a few tetras to keep him happy and give him some social time.

That is awesome.. now I do have a glofish tank myself it's a 40 gallon aquarium.. but I also have 2, 60 gallon aquariums and a 55 gallon aquarium.. they all get the same amount of care and love.. I do understand some people not liking the reason behind why glofish are marked.. but I am a well experienced fish keeper. And all my fish are happy and healthy. I saw the glow bettas in store the first day they came out by coincidence, didnt buy one though but they were flying off the shelves. However, I went back to see them about two weeks after and it's already just another standard betta situation. Bettas sit there for days or weeks without being sold, eventually dying to the conditions. I knew it would happen, the jacked up 10-30 dollar price for one turns people away, even me, and now they're gonna suffer. The ones with red fins in particular are the ones suffering the most since no one gets those due to the non glow red it has. Hopefully the craze dies down and the production gets reduced. We've got too many normal bettas suffering already, dont think we need a huge two week eye appear for children and people of interest. Good video though, the white opal looks like a blue glow betta in the lights. Good choice in music too!

I don’t love glow fish either as I worry they won’t be cared for properly but as you mentioned in tank talk live the other night, I do know they are an entry into the hobby. And for many, speaking for myself personally, we found your channel as we tried to problem solve or better understand our own starter tanks. I would love to see you all welcome the glow fish owners. You know, do your very approachable educational style videos that maybe are like “have a glow fish? Want to do more? Want it to thrive?” Rather than making start up fish keepers feel like the made a mistake by even trying the hobby. This tank creation is a great step in that direction. But attracting the starter fish keepers (including the glow keepers) will certainly earn you subscribers, longer term fish keepers and deepen the hobby. Love you guys and all you done for my own personal knowledge, can’t thank you enough!

I have a baby glow betta I love her, and the glow fish company was actually just trying to help detect early signs of water pollution, so I don’t think that’s that bad even though it failed and just became pets instead, there are much worse things that people do to animals than just adding a harmless genetic to them I think, but I don’t know that’s just my opinion

Pendlera Exactly, and people don’t criticize those type of selective breeding, but when it Hass to do with helping the environment they want to get all controversial with it and say it’s not a good thing, the glow fish project never actually help detect water pollution because it didn’t go as planned, but I admire the fact that they were at least attempting to help the environment, and now we have beautiful pets to show for it, so even if it didn’t go as planned they were Still trying to help, and I don’t think that’s something that should be criticized

If you want some glowing things in your tank get some Latias. or just put on the black light you will be amazed what colors your fish display when you do that. I've seen some display tanks that are in black light rooms and the fish are stunning.

I had never heard of a glow Betta until I watched your livestream last Thursday and although I don’t necessarily have an opinion on glow Tetras, I was appalled by the very thought of glow Betta’s for all of the reasons that Lisa stated. The other reason is because of the huge mistakes I made when I had my very first Betta a couple of years ago because I didn’t know any different, the poor fish couldn’t bare the bright light I had in the tank and spent the entire time hiding behind the filter or heater. I still live with the guilt of that. It’s because of this I cannot think for the life of me why anyone would think it would be a good idea to make Bettas’ glow? I will get bashed for this but I feel the concept is abusive to Betta’s.

They are now doing it to target children and people that wanna buy them on an "urge" like oh wow those are cool.... oh a glo tank for 30 bucks? I'm gonna do that.... then they forget about them... or they sit in a 5 year olds room and hopefully they remember to go feed them etc. And out in the wild they would be picked off quickly because they are so bright. Like fishing lures. It's just unnecessary to me. They are pretty either way. I think glo fish are pretty and deserve a good home... I think all fish are pretty and deserve a good home. Apparently Glofish said that the way they make their betta fish “glo” doesn’t affect them in anyway. Well I was in petsmart today and they were 6 glo bettas. None of them were really swimming. They sort of just “sat” in their small containers. The first 3 looked really sick in general, another one probably had dropsy, but the last 2 looked the worst. One of them only had one eye and the other had a severely crooked back. I gently moved around the container of the on with the crooked back to see if they could swim, but all it could do is wiggle around at the bottom. I don’t understand why people think this type of abuse is okay and the fact that petsmart/petco is allowing this. (Not to mention the other sick bettas and other fish there were, how they abuse their other animals, and the fact that petsmart/petco get their animals from mills). Anyway, that’s why I’m refusing to shop there lol.

While I personally don't feel the want to have any type of GloFish, I don't care if other people have them. So long as they're properly cared for. Which is why I was, and still am on the fence about GloBettas. Bettas are already so misunderstood and mistreated, I only see them becoming even more so now that they 'glow'. Plenty of people in my fish groups say that the new tanks that have been released with the bettas aren't any smaller than 3 gallons. Which is good, but I know that there are still smaller sized Glo tanks available. I've also read that the individual price of the Globettas is around $20. Which I'm sure will dissuade some people from buying them. But really, when it comes to making sure that bettas, and all other animals sold in the lottery industry are not abused, the pet industry needs a huge makeover. Anyway, that's just my two cents. I LOVE the tank that you set up, Lisa! The only way that I'd ever seriously consider getting a Globetta is if they come out with a purple one...

One thing I noticed is no one is talking about putting something towards the top of the aquarium so the betta can rest or sleep on. when I bought one of the leaves that has a suction cup on it to stick to the side of the glass my betta(Mr. Finnly) right away hopped on it and that's where he slept. In their natural habitat, they live in shallow water(rivers ) and like to be able to rest close to the surface.

I’ve had already two baby boy glo bettas die on me. One from blindness and not being able to find food, the other from a sickness he brought with him (quarantine everyone!) and now I got a female a couple days ago because she was one of 8 bettas at my Petsmart. Literally there were no others. And all the glo bettas were either clamped, or sick and dying. All but her. So she came home with me and is doing fantastic. She has a naturalistic 5.5 gallon tank with tannins, live plants, and driftwood. Of course a filter and heater. She also has just a plain white light. I don’t care for the blue ones. She’s thriving. I honestly didn’t care if she was normal or a glo betta. They’re all the same to me. She’s a happy little chunker. I’m not against glo fish of any kind, but the genetics of these glo bettas seem to be even less than the normal bettas. And that’s what sucks. It’s 50/50 weather or not you get a blind one or sick one. It doesn’t help people put them in tiny uncycled tanks with sharp glo decor and painted items. I know mine much prefer live over anything else. I use silk sometimes too. They don’t mind. But either way. Nothing wrong with glo fish, I do like how you have an alternative. Just not a fan of all the sharp plants you put in a betta tank. Especially one with big fins. It sucks you’re advocating for an alternative when in reality it’s just the same thing a normal glo betta would go through. There’s no difference here. Whether liked or not. I can imagine this white male will have ripped up fins from those plants in no time. They glow just as much in normal conditions as in this kind.

I have basically this kind of setup! I went a little less hard with the glo-decorations, I have the black-with-fruity-pebbles substrate and a pair of moonrock looking hides that luminesce faintly, the glo lights with neon silicone seals on the tank itself and a black background, plus a platinum white betta boy! he's definitely main stage in his setup, faintly glows in his own right, it's nice. I added a background curtain of anarchis to help with the water quality and give him something to lounge in and it's growing wildly now, to the point where I'll probably have to transplant 2/3rds of it into my soon to be second setup that'll be more natural themed.

I have a white opal, he looks amazing under different colored LEDs.. he also picks up the different tones of rocks and gravel as the light reflects.. no glow lights or plastic needed. Just get any type of silver/white fish (doesn't have to be a betta) and some LED accent lights to put around the tank at night.

Huge betta fan here, have bred them several times over the many years in the hobby. NOT a fan of glow fish, prefer my decor of my display tanks to be natural strats / colors.... The fish was designed to help scientists determine when waterways were contaminated. If they glowed, it meant there were pollutants in the water.

I personally am grateful for the emergence of globetta. As someone who works in a corporate pet store, I am constantly having to explain that the 2.5 to 5 gallon glofish tanks(WITH PICTURES OF GLOFISH ON THEM) are not actually suitable for glofish. Now I can direct them to a globetta instead, providing an alternative instead of dealing with a frustrated mom asking why we would sell a tank for glofish that you can’t actually put glofish in.

Personally I have mixed feelings with glow fish in general (I never knew that glow betas were a thing until now) but whenever I pass them in the pet smart I always go to I make it a point to stop and talk to the fish (all the fish) Watching this made me miss my two betas... Streamer and Treasure were their names... I had Streamer for about two years before he passed away (old age) and I had Tresure for less then a year before he swam up to heaven (got sick and I couldn’t figure out what to do to help him)... I hope my two blue gems (Streamer was a beautiful sapphire blue and Tresure was a gorgeous aquamarine) are happy up there with the three goldfish I’ve lost... Spot, Stripe, & Yin-Yang ☯️ and I kind of want to get another beta now that I have inspiration for what to do with my old 20 gallon tank that’s been sitting unused in my garage for about two years now... (my 3 current goldfish are scarily close to out growing their 60 gallon tank... I don’t have a pond and can’t put one in because no space and not enough money and I got them the biggest tank I could fit in my house!)

I saw glo-fish for the first time and instantly wanted to come back to the hobby. I have now had my 29g tank over 5 yrs. All cute decor is gone; drift wood added, stone and lots of live plants. There is however something missing; the glo fish lol I never got them. I still like them but ended up going for some of my old favs 1st. The big thing is, the glo fish got me excited and brought me back to the hobby. I just have the one tank, but i love this idea. May have to get a 10g kit to play with 💙💚🐟

I have a female glow betta named Rhyme and I love her, she is super sassy and active! I don't like glow decor but she looks great with just plants, gravel, and her coconut. Some people have said they are blind but for sure mine is just fine as she jumps for dangled food and loves following things near her tank. This is very nice. That betta is beautiful! I have a betta in a 5 gallon tank. How many live plants can I put in a 5 gallon? How do you take care of the plants? How do you keep all of those items in the tank from getting covered in gunk/algae? Shouldn't you at least rinse out a new tank and the gravel before setting it up for the first time? Just curious.

My girl started a 20 gallon tank with all glow fish. I didn’t do any research, but it seems like they’ve been tampered with, so I never really cared for them. I think we had 10 different ones in a 20 gallon tank. All but 1 died at various times. Here we are 2 years later and this 1 dude is still around. We’ve gotten other fish that don’t glow, and this dude is still going strong, longest I’ve ever had a fish for.

Odd question, I just want to be sure because the last thing I'd want to do is stress my fish. While I prefer natural tanks myself, my daughter might enjoy a tank like this. No as long as you don’t have a harsh black light it will not stress out your betta. Also you can put tetras or danios in with bettas (as long as you have a 10 gallon) they won’t harm eachother at all.

I am not a fan of glow fish in general and don't have my tank set up to glow. One day I was in petco to get some plants and supplies and this 1 glow betta swam to the front of her cup everytime I walked by. Naturally I stopped to say hi but kept telling myself I'm not getting a glow fish last time I walked by her I noticed she had a couple of damaged fins and still swimming up excitedly to say hi and I just couldn't leave her in the cup. Now her name is Baby and she's thriving in my 20 gallon. Still don't have blue lights or glow decorations but I fell in love with her personality. everytime I stick my hand in to organize or clean the tank she gets in my hand! So I guess I sit in the gray area on glow bettas.

Nothing wrong with java fern. The deservedly esteemed Takashi Amano made frequent use of it. Great choice. And what a nice way to subtly discourage glo fish.

Great looking tank.....Way better than them things that look like they have gotten nuked from something. Now if only my wife would watch you alil then we could get more tanks... haaha... cheers guys keep up the great work. Love from NZ.
