Great and fair honest review, thank you. On my side, I tested them all, AfricaTwin1100, DucatiDesertX, Norden901, Tenere700, Tuareg660. I was close to a deal for the Tuareg when I found a brand new 890R of 2021 at a bargain price: she is now in my garage. Anyway the Tuareg660 was excellent, I felt better on it than the Tenere, my background being enduro bikes. I had WRF400, WRF250, EXCF450, EXCF500, and I feel good on the 890R. DesertX is excellent too but price is insane. Tuareg660 is pretty close to my 890, handling and engine feel, but 890R is 1 step above.

I have had a WR250R I put 20k miles on. Then two WR450Fs with similar miles. Big Yamaha fam. Im choosing the Norden 901 or the KTM 890 Adventure R for my next bike. I dont need a "crutch" to make it through a trail with my skill level, but I can appreciate not feeling ad fatigued from riding a more top heavy and slower bike at the same pace. I rode a T7 anf 890 Adventure R back to back and the KTM is a lot easier to ride at highway speeds as well as low speed technical riding with its lower slung center of gravity. The question reallt becomes more about "value". If you want to ride safer on rougher stuff you will need to drop a few grand on the Tenere suspension. Then at that point, the price difference is a lot closer so "value" gets a lot more subjective.

Thanks for your views. You don't need to buy the electronic aids when you order the KTM. Mine has none of the extras, for the reasons you stated. The Yamaha is not powerful enough for road riding - I use every horse power the KTM has, but when off-road I regulate the power with the cylindrical device on the right of the handle bars. I've been doing this for 43 years! In my view the KTM's suspension is too hard - my sag figures are: front 50, rear 67. I would like to see around 80mm. I'm regular weight (85kg). This is a disappointment.

The Tuareg 660 solves the problem of having to choose between the 890, and the T7. The Tuareg660 solves the problems of both, low seat, low centre of gravity, topnotch suspension, just enough, superb electronics, proper creature comforts, sporty, and above all fun. As for long term reliability, the Aprilia Tuono 660, the base of the Tuareg, is a good indication. I think the second iteration of the Aprilia Tuareg, will be unbeatable. Aprilia should work towards this end, because they have a winner on their hands.

The KTM is marginally more cramped. Bar height is the main difference and very easy to fix with risers. They offer a taller seat if your legs feel cramped. The wind protection really isn't great even for us. Sascha has the touring screen for long rides.

Excellent commentary on the Yamaha. I agree on these positive/negative comments. The T7 suspension stock engineering is baffling considering how well the YZ/WR lines are widely regarded as having class leading suspensions. My T7 is amazing until you over-ride the suspension. Nice review. Had an early 790r which I ended up selling for reasons unrelated to the bike. A couple of years later I was in the market again and went with the 890r. Considered the Tenere but the higher center of gravity, smaller fuel capacity, and stock suspension issues offset the higher price of the KTM. Both great bikes but the 890r is the perfect mid size adventure bike for me. Seems like the stock suspension on my 2022 890r is a bit more compliant than on the 790r I had. Overall reliability would go to the Tenere no doubt. So far my 890r has been fine but it's early days.

Now that some time has gone by it is interesting to see how both of these companies have reacted to opinions and comparisons. As of now KTM has completely improved the 890R (2023) and Yamaha has done what Yamaha always does and are still sitting their thumbs. You still cannot get a T7 for the most part here in the states, the only one you can get in the states is the original at a massively elevated price which means you would be paying for old tech on the T7 vs brand new everything on the 890R and you would be paying the same price. Yamaha is so freakin stupid it blows my mind. The fact that the World Raid and other improved models are not available in the states is such a massive oversight by Yamaha. That being said, and I can't be the only one to make this move.....I would have strongly considered the T7 World Raid since it is a proper competitor to everything else but nope, not available. What did I do? I just bought the Desert X and I may, down the road, also get the 890R. How a company as large as Yamaha cannot keep up with KTM blows my mind because supply chain issues affect everyone equally. I can't even imagine the amount of sales Yamaha is losing because of how behind they are. I can attest to one case that is for sure. This has nothing to do with how good and how reliable Yamaha bikes are and they are it just points out which manufactures want it more. The original T7 is a great bike no doubt and it is a budget friendly bike but it is nowhere in the league of the 890 or Desert X......the World Raid is.
@justsomedude445 Жыл бұрын
what did you buy ?? i agree with all your points was in the same dilema
@chrisvantassel8867 Жыл бұрын
@@justsomedude445 I ended up buying the Ducati Desert X. It was more expensive but it literally has no weaknesses. It is amazing on road and off road. It has every feature you need, expandable gas tank, cruise control, etc. I find the DX to be closer to the T7 than the 890 but has the balance of the 890, great suspension, faster than both and feels like a true off-road capable machine. Because it is longer it is more stable off road and does not get as harshly deflected. The rider modes are very impactful and the tech is the best in the class. For me it was worth paying more and I even got the Termy exhaust upgrade with the Evo tech package. The T7 is a bargain but if did the same tings to the T7 that already exist on the DX you would end up paying the same. Ducati was very clever in the DX design. I would have considered the World Raid but Yamaha is just plain stupid for not bringing it here. Anyway, good luck!

Yes, it's more expensive and there have been some small issues and the Austrians, like the Germans (i.e. my 2015 BMW S1000RR) do some really stupid shit trying to be clever which just makes things complicated and expensive. But overall, I think it's a much better bike in the dirt. It's more expensive, but has more power, handles better, and has much better suspension. I would have PREFERRED to have gotten a metric bike for reliability purposes but they had nothing to match the KTM's dirt ability. I'm 59 and getting back into dirtbiking after not riding for decades and I wanted a bike with the best dirt ability I could get to cover up MY flaws as much as possible so I can get my skills back at MY pace. I'm WAY more comfortable on the street even with pretty knobby tires, so I'm biasing it for being more comfortable for me in a medium (dirt) I'm not as comfortable in.

It’s concluded separately in the video. 890R has better suspension. Teneré has better engine. Ergonomic wise the KTM is a better trail riding bike, T7 is a better long ranger Electronic, KTM is superior no doubt, but the Yamaha seems doesn’t need that much anyway, so it’s a mindset difference. Finally, they’re surprised that in their experience 890R is more reliable than T7, though the KTM comes across more issues but all small problems, but Teneré engine problem happened much earlier than expected. But it’s just their own experience narrowed down to only 2 bikes, can’t represent the entirety.

Why go offroad with a bike that weighs over 400lbs?
@YSPDJapan Жыл бұрын
Because you have a ton of power which comes into play when you get out on dirt roads. I ride a super tenere (600 lbs) and it's heavy, but with good tires and technique you can really throw it around, especially on flowing single/dual track. But when I get a stretch I can easily hit 70 mph, and if it's a dirt road I can easily do 100+ mph. It's all about your terrain. If you ride mountainous single track, sure, get a single cyl, but if you do any highway riding, dual track, dirt roads, a middle weight 2 cyl adventure bike will be more fun if you like to go fast.
@motoskillsfactory Жыл бұрын
The feeling of being able to go anywhere is really amazing. Sure, a single cylinder 450 is going to be better off-road, but being able to hit the single track and then the highway on the way home is really cool. Long distance rides are really where these bikes shine compared to smaller ones.
