I also used to play a 70g Kuro Kage Silver X-Shift shaft in my driver and it felt great, then. Absolutely great for feeling where the shaft was throughout the backswing and downswing and great ball flight. In fact, a 70+ year old guy I was once playing with asked to try my driver and his mind was blown when he could hit it longer and straighter than his gamer driver. He tried it again, same result mind blown… 😮. So, there’s something there in the heavy shaft benefits… 🤔 I now play a 60g X-Stiff Ventus Velacore Black (self fitted 😀) which feels plays better, though a lot lighter. Now, I have a theory that the heavy shaft improved my swing with positioning, so now I can benefit from the light shaft and the heavy shaft served as a training aid whilst using it. So the “heavy” shaft phase shouldn’t be looked at as wasted time. Great content as ever Gaz. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

@@garymartingolf as Sam only stocks PXG the value to consumers is the variety of shafts he offers and the fine tuning of individual clubs. Not everyone wants to buy a whole new club but a new shaft or an optimised existing club is a lot cheaper proposition.

@@jimwocha4949 I completely agree. We do touch on alot of high end shafts but as I’m readying the comments, It did make me think of trying to improve someone’s current set up with a £150 shaft budget, as a lot of people wouldn’t value putting a £300 shaft in a driver.

As you say its amazing the differences in performance between shafts which can be identified during a good shaft fitting, you aren't the slowest of swingers so its quite surprising that you are playing 5S shafts because these all felt very soft to me especially the Red 5S which I really don't like and their higher torque makes them feel and play even softer yet, the numbers confirm the Black profile just doesn't suit you even though the Black 5S is not very stiff compared to heavier Black and TR Black shafts.
@garymartingolf18 сағат бұрын
Most of my life I’ve been fitted based on club speed and then ended up with shafts that felt to me were too stiff, Sam’s the first fitter to go outside the box of club speed to find me a shaft I actually like the feeling of using. I know what you mean, it’s a shaft that you wouldn’t typically think of for the speed I swing, but because it’s the velocore, I get the feeling of a flex I like without the feeling of torque you’d usually expect in a stiff, so it’s a win win for me.

This is where players should invest, not the head but shaft. All drivers are maxed out for adhering to USGA/RGA rules, thus investing more in the shaft will provide that difference.

I’ve been in contact with Sam. Hope to see him within 10 days (weather depending) to see if a shaft tweak to my 2018 Cobra F8 woods can improved things. The heads are immaculate but shafts abit worn. So far the new PING, PXG, Cobra Darkspeed have not been able to make any improvements with stock shafts to justify replacing the Aldila 2KXV Blue R 70g shafts. I’m a slow moderate tempo 84mph driver so it’s interesting that these new lighter shaft do not fit me.
@garymartingolfКүн бұрын
It will all come to light once you’ve seen sam. The lighter shafts may suit you, but if there’s not changing the head weights to match the lighter shafts, you’re probably testing them with a heavy swing weight. You’re in safe hands 👌🏼

Love these videos with Sam, one thing I think is you need to see a sports psychologist Gary, your mind and feel instantly just makes you hit stuff really bad. Im only saying this as a reviewer type youtuber there is no reason with your skill level why you cant hit all those shafts "okish" and then of course see the differences. There is no way years ago when you were buying loads of different clubs unfitted you did a bad shot and then just could never hit it properly. You see it alot in your course vlogs, when you "feel" good you play so much better but once you feel a bad shot your gone for the game. Like with the black here your up to 10mph ball speed down for no reason at all other than in your head. I hope this doesnt come across as a negative I just think it could be interesting to see.

I bought the Ventus Red TR Velocore in 5 R Regular for my G430 MAX as I'm in-between a regular & a stiff shaft with my swing speed & the stock shaft was too floppy in regular & too stiff in a stiff. This Ventus Red TR Velocore in 5 R fits my swing perfectly with the stiffer upper section & softer middle. It's a fair bit of money to spend but perfect if your in-between regular & stiff shafts.
@garymartingolfКүн бұрын
I was the same with stock stiff and X. Unless people have the same issue, it’s very hard for them to value an exotic shaft.

@@kevintimpson219 before my fitting it was 140mph ball speed giving me around 93mph, after being fitted into the G430 Max it went up around 144 ball speed & 96mph then i got the Ventus shaft, with this Ventus TR shaft in 5-R its 148 ball speed & around 98mph. Dispersion is a lot better & my misses right have all but gone as the stock shaft wasn't closing quick enough for me & leaving the face open for a slice. I'm now around 255 to 275 total yardage depending on strike & ground conditions. I've never been a big hitter, I'm 5ft 5in & 11st 10. I was around 235 total before fitting & new shaft so its made a massive difference. This is regular to stiff in stock shafts not being an option for me but you might need Gary's numbers for your self if stiff & x stiff stock are an issue for you.

300 quid for a shaft is nonsensical in my opinion. There might be a slight "gain" that a fitter will emphasise as it's in their best interest to upsell. Different story getting fitted when buying a new driver and finding the right weight and stiffness thst suits you. But hey, let people spend their hard earned money on what ever they like.
