If you've been looking at the Sony A7RV and now see the cheaper baby brother Sony A7CR, don't buy it just yet, it's missing some key features which might still make the A7RV a better buy.

I agree, it is not a pro body with the features removed. It is however tempting as a travel camera where you can crop in and bring less lenses (landscape, occasional portrait) compare to the A7Cii... But the price difference between a A7Cii and A7CR is too high for enthusiasts. I am however very happy to see a silver body (as a non pro). I am currently Fuji X-T3 and I am tempted... But between an X-T5 or X-H2 and the increased price on the glass side... (Viltrox 27 1.2 is a third of the price of a Sony 50 1.4 G) It is certainly a very big bump. Bringing down the price of the A7Cr would have been less of a scary move as I can spread more the purchases of the lenses thanks to the crop... And the Fuji Autofocus is coming along to a level that is now acceptable for a non pro.

I think that the design of the Sony A7CR with the EVF in the corner is a great thing, but the EVF needs to be larger with much higher magnification, it also needs a joystick and a simpler, thinner back screen, then I will buy it ! Maybe I would even buy two...

The value of A7CR is it gives much of the A7RV, (61MP!, IBIS, Autofocus, etc.) in a smaller body at 75% of the cost, (-$1000). The “doesn’t have this or that” talk makes me say if you need/want all the bells and whistles buy it in the A7RV. I’m pretty sure Sony says that as well! Those who value the common features of both that separate it from other models but don’t need the things that make the A7RV $1000 more expensive (joystick, extra C buttons, better flippy screen, better EVF, better battery, 1 extra IBIS stop, 8k video, etc.) are going to jump all over the lower priced A7CR.

I agree with Chris from the point of view that neither camera is cheap. The "Bells and whistles" of which you write are quality of life improvements for which a professional would gladly pay a premium (one card slot can be a deal breaker). For who is the A7CR targeted? Amateurs? It seems like a backup camera for a professional; the batteries are thus fortunately the same! So are you an advanced amateur for whom this camera appeals? My opinion is that the Compact full-frame cameras are paradoxical.
@VynZography

I guess SONY expects that if you need all the things. you will buy both cameras. That's kind of a silly expectation IMHO especially as we know a firmware upate will give the other model everything. Lets please stop making excuses for the cunsumer un-friendly decisons of multi-billion dollar companies, don't buy both. buy neither.
@Cthames123

@@VynZography I won't be buying either, as both are waaaaay too much camera for me. It sounds really advanced and cool, but I don't need/want 61MP, auto framing, and a lot of the enhancements offered by both. Further the $3-4K that I don't spend on either is going to get me further down my path to financial freedom! Still, I can see where the A7CR fits into the world. The $1000 price difference is appreciable enough to appeal to those wanting a cheaper A7RV and are willing to live with the tradeoffs. My choice, (if I was making one), would be for the larger A7RV and all the full articulating screen, 8 stops of IBIS, larger EVF, Joysticking, and customizable button goodness it offers, but I don't need it and I'm keeping my $4000.

Here in the Philippines, I find the compactness a significant advantage. The public places here are a bit allergic to professional looking cameras (typically large bodies and evfs are in the middle). Thus I remember being called out and asked for a permit using an a7IV, even for the sake of photoshooting my family lunch and not even commercial purpose. They keep implying that the place holds the right to ask permit and deny the use of pro cameras for privacy reasons. Now, I borrowed an a7c from a friend and been to almost all public places shooting random strangers and places without ever being approached by security. Well I guess for the disadvantage of ergonomics, I'll go for compact this time (a7cii / a7cr) for that reason alone of not dealing with any weird prohibitions.

The fact that the A7CR seems to have upset a lot of Sony full frame owners and the APS-C people who bought the A6700 is a sign to me that it’s a great product. It’s absolutely perfect for me as someone who owns an A7RV already and was on the lookout for a new APS-C body. For me the A7CR is two cameras in one: the top of the line Sony 26MP APS-C camera with 7 stops of IBIS and also a beastly full frame camera with one of the best sensors ever made. Depending on what I want to do I can put the 40G on it for the most stealth full frame setup imaginable or put on a small APS-C zoom like the 16-55G and have amazing flexibility in a tiny package. This camera is literally the promise of compact mirrorless cameras finally delivered. Funny that a lot of the A7CR reviews are done by people who clearly prefer larger cameras complaining about their pinky. That’s what the other cameras are for, my grip extender hasn’t left the box 😂

The compactness of the a7cr is negated by the FF lens sizes. Unless you use some of the smaller Samyang lens and maybe the Tamron 20-40mm. Alternative is APSC, the sigma 18-55 APSC on the Sony A7CR would give you a crop at still 26mb. More than plenty for most use cases.

Good analysis! Completely agree. I would love a completely stripped down version of this compact body with a very simple tilt display at a lower price. Less buttons, fully focused on photography. Stick one of tiny Sony lenses on there, like the 24mm f2.8 or the 40mm f2.5 and you really have a good alternative to the Leica Q3.

Had the A7RV, nice camera. Sold and bought the A7CR, worked well for me. I never worry about view finders - bottom line is, with autofocus you can "point and shoot", literally. Most images can be corrected in software, if necessary.

Own the a7r5, I also bought the a7cr because of its size. I took it out once and it became obvious to me that although it's smaller and lighter which is nice the evf up until this point I wasn't concerned with was a real issue. With the a7r5 when you look at the photo you've just taken the image through the evf looked fantastic when checking details and focus etc, whereas on the a7cr I couldn't tell at times if I had nailed focus because of the resolution, the lcd screen wasn't so much of an issue. Equally as was mentioned once I put a bigger lens on it lost its small size attraction. Now realise that the a7r5 really isn't as big as I imagined and the compromise on size isn't enough reason for me to keep the a7cr, so I'm sending it back

In addition to the better EVF, flippy screen, joystick control, and 2 additional custom buttons, the A7RV gives you 8k video, better battery life, better In body image stabilization (8 stops vs 7), dual SD card slots, and a full HDMI output. The enhanced LCD screen and EVF seem pretty expensive which is likely where the cost difference comes in. When summing up all the extra features I can see where the $1000 price diff comes in.

You don't get the grip advantage. With additional grip the gripping area is a bit taller than A7RV's so it suggests to me it's more comfortable (many shooters also got a plate for better hold for A7RV). You use the grip with mid and larger glasses, and use body only with small G primes for travel light. You cannot detach from A7RV anything so you never able to reduce size for hiking. Also A7CR body almost a brick, it's easy to pull out from a small bag, the EVF bump is not in the way. It's seems a minor problem, but I often have trouble to pull out my A7RIV from 3L sling because of the bump. The fact it's 200g lighter makes a lot difference with small 24 or 40g prime, but not with 35 or 50GM. A7RV with 35GMis 1250g, A7CR with 40 2.5G is 700g and lot smaller package, it's even comfortable with a wrist strap.

Funny thing is I'll buy the A7Cr even if it is the same price as the A7RV and it has the same reduction in features. Why? Because size is worth something; size alone is worth $1000. I want a small, full frame, camera! The EVF is just fine, as is the one of the non-R A7 cameras. It doesn't affect picture quality so I don't care. More importantly, the A7Cr has smaller, thinner grips! I like smaller thinner grips and I dearly miss the ergonomics of the original A7/A7R before they repeatedly make the grips and body thicker and bigger. Finally, all the slight reductions in shooting speed, IS or the missing card slot? Meh, I was on the A7RII for 8 years and it didn't bother me.

I love your content @Chris Brockhurst, (your content is fantastic), but 4:55 I disagree with everything you said. The reason why they are providing the modular grip in the first place is to address the ergonomic issue you are highlighting in that with certain lenses the camera’s body/grip is too small. So, Sony provides the modular grip which can be put on and taken off, and you are still complaining. I don’t get it…The reason to get the A7CR and not the A7RV is to save the $1000, without having the ergonomic compromise.

Completely agree with your video! I was really excited about the A7Cr but the price has me pausing to buy. Too many compromises verse the A7rV. I like the idea of a smaller discreet camera but this is really expensive for a camera that is essentially the same as the A6700 except for the sensor. The other point you make well is with this sensor, it's better with higher quality glass like GM lenses and those are larger and heavier and not well balanced on this body. Sony needs to make more G lenses like the 24, 40, and 50mm for these two new bodies.

Totally agree - I posted a similar video on my channel. Last week, Sony had the A7RV on sale for $400 off PLUS a $500 trade-in bonus (literally any crappy lens qualified). I picked one up for $3k for the same price as an A7CR - it was a no-brainer. Sony totally missed the mark with the A7CR. Perhaps there is an RX1R iii around the corner?...

People really need to stop comparing brand new prices vs. discounted promotional prices for existing products. If A7C R is $2999 new, that means deals will start popping up by Memorial Day next year. Good chance that it'll be close to $2k for deal hunters. Why would the same deals that exist for A7R V this year not exist for A7C R next year? I think the $3k starting price is reasonable.
@RandumbTech
@RandumbTech Жыл бұрын
@@mbvglider Nah - it's absolutely fair to compare current prices. There is nothing new (except for some AI and UI bits) that the A7CR offers while falling woefully short on everything else. Unless you really need the marginally smaller body, the A7RV makes so much more sense for most people.
@mbvglider
@mbvglider Жыл бұрын
@@RandumbTech The only people who should be interested in this camera are the people who want the smaller camera body. It's not marginally smaller; it's substantial. In any case, the price issue will fix itself over time because discounts will become a thing. There's absolutely a case to be made for waiting for the price to drop if you want this camera because it will, but I don't know why people keep suggesting A7R V to people who are looking for a compact camera. It would also be a fantastic second camera for people who already have another Sony body. It's a very specific tool for people who want a very specific form factor.

Struggling which camera to buy, at first I wish it was compact, at second I like to use manual vintage glass so it should have good evf for crucial focusing. - A7CR - main problem is EVF and I feel I will have to add grip in some cases, i.e. for travel I might wish to take something like 28-200. Another problem is flip out screen that makes more attention on street. -A7RV is great it has almost everything I wish from the camera and much more so I feel it just overkill for me and I wish it was a bit more compact and weight a bit less. Rangefinder body also nice to have. So after all I'll be unhappy with either option. I wish to have something in the middle: not as big as A7RV and not that small and crippled as A7CR. And that never gonna happen, the sad truth of business: Sony wish you to buy 2 cameras.

I have 2 full frame cameras, so I understand the mentality. I have a used (open box) A7C, “day camera”, that I bought form a song and a A7IV, “Night camera” (bought it brand new). I love the size and cute factor of the smaller full frame A7C, but its limitations makes me appreciate all the wonderful things about my A7IV. Both the A7R cameras 61MP! are much, much, much more camera than I need and I would never buy even one, much less both. With my current setup I can shoot all day long, but The file sizes on one of the A7R cameras would kill my hard-drive space so fast. but if I were in the game I’d go with the A7RV if I caught a killer sale, (June 11th 2024: Target online is selling it at a 17% discount ($3150) new), it’s even less used, and I’d keep my lower MP cutesy OG A7C for my 2 camera setup. The crazy articulating screen on the A7RV, the EVF, 8stops of IBIS for longer shutter speed shooting and handheld video, and the same buttons and the joystick that comes with the A7IV would do it for me.

Thanks for making this video Chris, I have had to watch this many times to remind myself not to sell the A7RV in favour of the A7CR as the GAS is hitting pretty hard with this one, the lighter and smaller package with the included LUTs preview is a real draw and it’s driving me crazy, I really hope Sony release a firmware update for the RV that would cure my GAS, I would even pay for an update.

Exactly my point :) the prices are for people who do not look at the price and other options... A7CII is so much more expensive than the Canon R8 which is almost the same camera on paper...A7Cr is too close to the A7rV. And we need small and cheap pancake lenses. Canon has now 28 2.8 that is something we need on the E mount. 16 2.8, Nikon has 40 2.0... Sony makes pancakes that are F1.8 big and more expensive but they are slow F2.8-2.5 and sorry but the 24 2.8 G is not the greatest optics... I think Sony are holding back now because Nikon and Panasonic are struggling. Panasonic released the best camera in the lower enthusiast class (now with AF) by far just like that from nothing, Sony made the A7rV with the screen like on the S1H... I am usually not a conspiracy theorist but... I think A7CII and A7Cr can be much cheaper and must be cheaper.

you forgot to mention the micro-HDMI on the a7CR vs full size on the a7Rv. I think a better evaluation to show the bad deal you get with the a7CR is comparing it to the a6700. They have the same EVF & screen!! what? $1400 vs $3000!! So you're paying more than double for the 61MP vs 26MP (oh, and both are the same if you're shooting APS-C mode) I was holding out buying the a6700 to see what the a7CR was like. Thought I would like a smaller body with APS-C lenses for walkaround, but would have the FF in the a7CR when needed. But Sony killed that idea for me, since I have the a7Rv, and no way would I want to pay $3000 for a substandard experience (EVF) walkaround "APS-C" that i could accomplish with a $1400 a6700

As a main body totally agree that the a75 makes perfect sense. But if you compare the a7cr with say a 24mm G and put it up against a a Leica q3 then it’s good value. I shoot the canon R5 and have RF glass which I love, but canon offers nothing in this interchangeable compact range. Come canon get with it 😅. Tried Fuji a second time using the x100v and it’s always left me feeling that I wanted more from it. A bit overrated unless you are jpg shooter. But as a high res, FF, ibis compact camera the a7c is the best option availed at the moment. Just wish they had the better evf and the a75 flip screen. Who knows maybe the a7r could sway me to to Sony eco system long term 😊 Nice review though.👌👌

I think the price is (kind of) reasonable. I say 'kind of' because I find it egregious that Sony bundles in that ridiculously overpriced grip and the A7CR price reflects that bundled item. I also have ZERO idea why the "new" multi-angle screen isn't the standard on EVERY Sony camera going fowards, the stupidity on that decision genuinely baffles me.

Wow thanks for making this video, I'm logical and rational person, I see a lot time a thing just doesn't make sense to buy and exist at all but a lot KZbinrs just not sure why they talk like it is make sense to have it and get it even the Pros and famous KZbinrs, things like Apple MagSafe wallet too, why you want to stick it back to your phone and not keep it safe in your pocket, it's a wallet, but a lot doesn't seem to realise, maybe it's the excitement for new product and try to justify because their love for the company but end up losing their rationality and logic to them. Why get a slightly smaller camera like A7C line at all at first place that still not pocketable like RX100 line because you still end up with a smaller camera that you still need to put into a bag but still noticeable from far away as a guy with camera when you use and lose its benefit if you going to use a big lens but end up doesn't have the great handling and quality of VF on a slightly bigger body camera and it just feel smaller from your own perspective and handling, not from the crowd the full size A7 is just A7C attached a proper size EVF, better go really small or go proper size. But how is the pinkies on the A7 body, is it still tight for it on the full size A7? I decided not to get A7CII/A7CR as my first camera, it's exciting that they are the new products but the actual practical one is A7RV and I will get it, althought the silver top of A7C line are good looking, I will get the 70-200mm F4 macro G ii with 2X converter to shoot tele and macro and I thought to just use iPhone 15 with its 13mm, 26mm and 52mm to shoot closer things, less intimidated and always be with you too, I thought to get 16-35mm F4 PZ too but depend on the fund and if the iPhone 15 is enough, not sure if it will be a waste not to get that lens to shoot video with it and just shoot with iPhone 15 tho
