Can you hear water, but can’t find a leak or any water damage? More than likely what you’re hearing is what is called thermal expansion. In your home you have duct work that distributes the conditioned air for your heating and air-conditioning system, and pipes for all of your plumbing fixture drains. When these ducts and pipes heat up or cool down they expand and contract causing you to hear a variety of different sounds ticking, popping, pinging, and one being what sounds like dripping water.

This is the best explanation of this phenomenon I’ve ever heard. Thank you. My house makes this noise and I’ve been tempted to tear out the drywall to find out what’s going on. Now I’ll settle in with another cup of coffee and the newspaper.

I love when you search the oddest combo of words in KZbin and you find exactly what you are looking for 😂. We moved into our new home and thought our home inspector missed this and the previous owner’s didn’t disclose it. Inspector came back out but couldn’t detect any moisture. We wanted to be sure so we had a plumber come out and sure enough they said the exact same thing you did. It’s pretty annoying but I’m glad it’s not a leak. This bathroom is over the dining room so water damage on the second floor would have been awful! It was comforting to hear the same sound in your video so I knew I wasn’t losing it. Thank you!

Very common, especially with new construction. You have PVC, which is plastic drain pipes and they make even a louder sound because we have to put a fireproofing sealant around the pipe as it passes through each floor of the home which magnifies the thermal expansion sounds.

My sister and I just removed a sheet of drywall behind her sink to find the “leak”. There was no sign of water damage. Most of the pipes had an isolator where they ran thru the 2x4s. Where there wasn’t an isolator, the hot water supply line was squeaking against the wood and making that dripping sound. I padded it with excess insulation and the sound is gone now. This video confirms our conclusion. Thanks!

This helped so much! I kept hearing a dripping noise. I have a tri level home and I would hear it next to my bed on the 3rd level and it was in the area that would run directly down to the water heater in the garage. I had a plumber come with their moisturizer radar thing and they couldn’t detect any moisture behind the walls and suggested exactly what you said. I was freaking me out thinking water damage was happening to my property. The noise still drives me crazy because we shower at night and can heard the dripping while in bed. Well it drives me crazy but my husband doesn’t seem to notice. I wish I saw this video a long time ago! Thank you for the thorough explanation

I’ve been having this problem and freaking out thinking water was dripping in my ceiling. Had plumbers come 3 times for 3 different areas in my house of that noise. But, it’s not when using hot water. It’s anytime any water is being used: washing dishes, washer, shower, faucet, and even flushing the toilet. Also, when no water is being used you can hear 1 loud drip every 40seconds or so. Plumbers still can’t find anything. No leaks, nothing. I can’t stress this enough.
@BJPoznecki
@BJPoznecki 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leah- Well it’s possible it’s not the plumbing and your possibly your heating and air-conditioning system. This video pertains to both plumbing pipes and heating and air condition ductwork expanding and contracting, making these various types of sounds one of which my sound like dripping water. If you have a plumbing leak unless if your situation is a one off scenario more than likely you will eventually see signs of a leak. So for now just continue to monitor until you see it water stains on your ceilings, walls, or floors. Hope this helps!

@@jonlim497 I had plumbers come out again, apparently did a temp fix because we're back at square one. BJ thank you, thank you!. I started hearing that dripping sound after I had my basement refinished. Prior to the refinish there wasn't a basement ceiling. The noise is audible when the furnace is heating and stops running.. I noticed it first in the basement, around a main vent which runs from one end of my home to the other and more vents branch out from that one. My fear was I thought water was seeping in from somewhere, but never saw any water stains or leaks. I've turned off the humidifier on the furnace thinking condensation was getting in some how. After watching your video, I had a few A HA moments. When the carpenter was finishing the basement ceiling, he framed around this particular vent with 2x4 wood, I thought it looked too bulky, I asked him if he could use smaller framing material and he obliged me. SMH. He removed it and used metal around that vent. It was so snug, you couldn't fit a piece of paper between the metal framing and the vent, the finished ceiling looks amazing. Next, fire stop had to be added to pass inspection. It is a 1973 solid brick ranch home, that wasn't required when initially built. I lived in the basement for a year until the main floor bathrooms were done. They've been completed and now I sleep in the upstair bedrooms. Its been a month sleeping on the main level and I hear that drip. Yep, 4:00 am on the internet trying to solve this problem, at least understand it. You're correct, the expansion space that was there, is no longer there, per my request.😢😢 plus, the section of the main floor above that metal framed sectione is creaky and a little weakened. Your explanation makes so much sense, that dripping sound is most prevalent around where the metal framing is and it echoes throughout. Thank you so much, I will be getting that fixed, but in the meantime I have a little peace of mind, not water. Thanks again BJ

Thank you Iron Sisters. Unfortunately I hate to be the bearer of bad at this point there is nothing that you can do. Unless you wanna go tearing up a freshly renovated house on a wild goose chase. During construction there are few steps that could’ve been taken in an attempt to possibly minimize the thermal expansion noises, however in your builders defense even if they did take some of these steps such as install thicker gauge ductwork, install different drain pipe material, etc. it’s not guaranteed would solve the problem.
@IronSisters

@@BJPoznecki I appreciate the time responding. We’ve done some of that work already … of course I know more about “building” now than before - not an expert by any means, but I certainly understand the value of using quality materials on internal components - they are equally as important as finishes. That said, insulating those mechanical runs/cavities and possibly adding insulation to ducts/pipes (wish we’d stayed with cast iron) is extra insurance to keep noises minimized too. Plus making those cavities a tad bigger too - as you mentioned - to keep things from hitting one another is useful if possible. In our case we had the room to do all of this but unfortunately these sounds weren’t anticipated and so none of this done. I hope folks watching your video are able to catch some of these things in the future during construction phases if possible, so perhaps this video and your comment thread will help someone down the road. Thanks again and keep up the great work! P.s. got my builder adding weather stripping to my vent flaps now as well thanks to another one of your vids 🙌

Hi Dave- It shouldn’t as long as you don’t have an active leak. As a courtesy you may want to share this video with the buyer and let them know that they may experience these thermal expansion noises, so this way they don’t get nervous when they move in and hear them.

Great video. Really has put my mind at ease. I hear this dripping (12-15 seconds apart) in ceiling when my bath sink is on for 5 minutes or so. It only happens when heat is on and stops a minute or so after it's off. Based on your comment, it sounds like expansion. Also hear it in ceiling when hot again when my garage utility sink on, again only hot water and stops a minute or so after it's shut off. Inspecting carefully around I see no damage of any kind. A question I'd like to ask, if there was a true leak wouldn't I hear that drip continue long after and not stop at all?... Anyways, thank you so much for this vid. This has been a thing for awhile now and so has my worry. Thanks to your video, hopefully I can relax now. Bless.

PrimitiveMeat- Typically if you have a plumbing leak you’ll see water stains on the ceiling, walls, etc. However, I have seen some unusual situations over my career, so I would run cold water at these 2 drains for an extended period of time like 30-60 minutes to see if anything leaks. If you aren’t able to create a leak than more than likely you’re just experiencing thermal expansion.

My newly built apartment developed this noise in my walls a few months after I moved in. Whenever myself or one of my neighbors flushes the toilet, there’s a very loud tapping noise in my wall. So loud that it wakes me up at 5:30-6:30am when my neighbors are up and getting ready for work in the morning. So frustrating that there’s nothing we can do about it. I use a box fan sound on my phone to drown out the noise every night 😂
@BJPoznecki
@BJPoznecki Жыл бұрын
Yeah, you might get lucky and be able to open up the ceiling or walls and try to make some modifications to quiet it down, but it’s a crapshoot. Typically it’s louder in the middle of the night because there’s no background noise so it’s more pronounced and noticeable when everything is dead silent.

We are experiencing this thermal expansion in a pipes running through the duct work in our basement. We built a new home and it started within 6 months of the build. It only happens when we run hit water from our kitchen faucet. My plumber is suggesting we open up the dry wall where the noise is coming from an see if we can slightly reposition the pvc pipe so it has room to expand without rubbing up against the duct work. I guess this is our only option? Your thoughts would be much appreciated because the noise is terrible especially when we run the dishwasher. Thank you

Hi Phillip- What you’re experiencing is very common, especially with a new home. Yeah, unfortunately, that’s the only option is to open up the area and see if you can adjust the pipe, or modify it in someway to minimize the noise.

In my new home, whenever I flush the toilet on the second floor, I consistently hear a dripping sound coming from somewhere inside the wall on the ground floor. Despite the fact that the toilet flush doesn't involve hot water, this sound persists. I haven't observed any visible signs of water leakage. What could be causing this issue? It's concerning that the builder seems to be disregarding it completely.
@BJPoznecki
@BJPoznecki 6 ай бұрын
You can also experience reverse thermal expansion where cold water is running through a pipe that’s warm. A lot of times you could have a drain pipe in the same joist cavity as your ductwork to where in the winter you’re running the heat and it’s heating up that area where your drain pipe is, so when you run cold water you’re cooling off the pipe and it’s contracting. What I would do is turn the heat off and turn everything on in that bathroom the sink, tub, shower, flush the toilet a bunch of times, etc., and let the water run for a good 30 minutes. Then, see if anything leaks, and/or if the noises stop once the pipe is cold. Let us know how it goes?

Thanks for sharing this information! I have a dripping noice I hear in my basement. If I put my ear close to the floor it almost sounds like it's coming from the floor. I'll admint, my ears aren't the best at locating things. It's spring, and things are pretty dry outside. Everything is dry, can't see any signs, nothing after following your recommended steps. Any ideas? I only hear it from the basement. I haven't noticed it before. Do you have any thougts or suggestions? When I bought the home 20 years ago I do remember them saying there was a high water table or they would have made the basement larger, but I don't see any water anywhere!

@BJPoznecki
@BJPoznecki Жыл бұрын
If it only happens when you’re running the dishwasher what I would do is run the dishwasher and hot water at the kitchen sink for a long time to where it heats up the pipe to see if the ticking noise stops once the pipe heats up. The disclaimer with this video is I always recommend people run a lot of water just to double check nothing is truly leaking because there is always a possibility of a leak.

I'm having the exact same problem right now in my condo everything you're describing. not only I'm hearing that knocking sounds and also the water running inside the pipes in the ceiling and walls above me. I'm frustrated I have hired multiple plumber and heating company. they had me bleeding the pipes, change the flapping valve inside the toilet, change the fluid master in the toilet bowl. specially at night i haven't had a goodnight rest in months, to the point now I'm putting the place for sell. they have a 1/4inch drywall, the pipes are pvc, it's horrible the extent the builder go to save money. a few plumber told me it's a permanent problem, the best thing for me to do tear down the ceiling and walls and insulating everything. IS THERE ANYTHING else I can do to fix this until I get rid of the place.

@@BJPoznecki I had a furnace installed directly above my master bedroom - I voiced my concern about noise to the contractors prior to the install and they assured me no noise would be present. But it appears it is common knowledge that this noise does occur. Seems like negligence on the part of the contractor. Should have installed in the garage. The only thermal noise we hear is direclty adjacent to the furnace unit itself. I don't buy the downplaying of harm - the sound is maddening when you are trying to fall asleep or are awakened by it.
