A big one that I rarely see discussed is planning where fan cables are going to be connected and how they will be controlled. For instance, you might have 4 fan connections on the motherboard. 2 PWM and 2 Voltage only but your 3 pin fans are located far away from the voltage headers and your 4 pin fans are located far away from your PWM headers. All in all you have 6 or 7 fans, some pwm, some voltage. This means you need to use splitters and extensions to properly hook them up. Your other option is two separate fan controllers, one for PWM, and one for Voltage control. This doesn't even remotely cover all of the options but I see at least 3/5 builds where this is done incorrectly with 3 pin and 4 pin fans running from the same headers or with them switched. Not every fan connection on every board allows for you to swap between Voltage and PWM.

Great video Dimitry, really enjoyed this one because my favorite phrase whenever I'd help out a friend for a build project, was "Learn from my mistakes" smh . . . I've built probably 8-10 full systems, but I've installed countless amounts of hardware from PSU"s, graphics cards, hard drives, ram, etc. I'm proud to say that everything I know about builds, I learned all on my own. And you know what THAT means huh Dimitry ? ? ....Below are a few of my more memorable mistakes ; 1. Not only have I used the wrong standoffs, but once or twice I screwed in a standoff. . . . . in the WRONG spot ! ! ! Only after I carefully lowered the mobo into the case, secured the wires for the power harness, to find out the standoff was put in the wrong spot. And wouldn't you know it, that it was the first standoff put into the case. 2. Didn't pay attention to the schematic on the mobo wire diagram. As a result, the fragile case power wires. . . only ONE of them, was placed on the wrong peg. I know what you're thinking; "just pull it off the peg and insert it onto the right one dummy" ! ! ! Sounds like a great idea, buuut I rerouted a bunch of wires to run along the bottom edge of the mobo [of course that's the busiest area of the mobo [usb headers, blu ray sound wires, big thick mobo power wires from the psu to the 24 pin etc]. But wait, there's more. I spent a considerable amount of time to route all the wires and tucked away loose ones, gave alot of thought how it would look, would I have to move it again, etc etc. Guess what I had to do make enough room to pull the wire pin out. 3. Replacing an old video card for a nice spankin new one oh . . . YYYYYAAAAAA muahahahaha !!! Well, bottom line, thank god I didn't damage anything, but As I was trying to remove the card from the pcieX slot, I forgot to unplug the monitor to card wire. I felt the card get caught up on something, so I jiggled it around a bit. I probably broke off a very small piece of card pcb fin, but it was so small it made no diff. Checked the mobo with a flashlight and all was good. 4. Took side cover off my case, forgot the fan on side cover was still plugged in, and pulled hard on the small fragile cable. one of the 3 prong fan wires got bent and broke off :( Welp, those are a few of my more memorable moments in PC building. But you know guys, I look back now and I have to say I don't regret any of it. I tell ya, there's nothing like seeing that glorious post screen logo come up after you boot the bitch up for the first time. I kinda felt like the mad scientist bring Frankenstein to life muahahaha ! Peace out !!

Common mistakes in my experience: - Not doing enough research on component dimensions to see if everything has enough clearance esp. in mini-ITX builds & 120/140/240/280mm radiator builds! - Over provisioning on the PSU; thinking you need a massive PSU for your components, when in fact you don't at all. Get a PSU calc & do the maths! - Thinking you can use all your SATA ports on your Motherboard while having your M.2 slots occupied; think again! - Over tightening screws and then stripping them! - Understanding the difference between UEFI & Legacy Booting and thinking you can change it easily post OS installation. - If you are doing dual boot, install Windows first, Windows does not respect boot sector, and you will have to reinstall GRUB from your Linux installation. - Not understanding AHCI vs ATA on SATA controllers, and not having a driver present upon OS installation; albeit older installs. - Not understanding GPT vs MBR partitioning schemes for larger drives, esp. booting RAID1 installations. :)

Each PC is a new adventure. The worst I had are usually related to connectors location. Nothing is better than not being able to plug your SATA cable because the GPU is blocking the access. My advice is also to deal with the the CPU and the HSF first, after that, your powersupply, your cable management, then you connect your motherboard and screw it at the end. Even there, the HSF might be blocking some screws... nothing is perfect.

He had it all set, ready to go out to the customer when I got back, and I decided to check how he had done it, being the newest one in the business. It was a system where were using an Intel stock heatsink, which has those little pins you need to push in. He had seen the little arrows that say to turn the pins, so that you can pull them back, and take the heat sink off, and turned them, thinking it was for locking it on. Been building PC's for 20+ years. Made many mistakes, that's how you learn. The thing that still gets me to this day is having cable length and reach issues, fans, SATA, power etc. You have this idea of executing a build and what would look the best only to have your plans foiled by a cable that would just not reach that damn component. Same goes for having everything neat and tied up with this one damn cable that is just to short to route through the way you want it, neatly with its friends. I also agree about the different threads on screws... it has screwed me over many times... pun intended.

Hey Dmitry, is the Ryzen 7 2700x working well again with Adobe premiere applications, or is it still unstable?
@leightaylor80695 жыл бұрын
So glad you didn't make any of those mistakes and of course neither did I. Magnetic parts dishes are great, I lost 2 thumbscrews for the tempered glass window on a BitFenix Eclipse P300 case for several months before I finally found them. The clip in Sata cables are Sata 3 standard. The wiring is the same as Sata 2 the difference is just those clips. My mistake was trying to get video out from the motherboard when the graphics card wasn't working - took me hours before I realised I had an Intel Xeon - no integrated graphics. That was fun. Another one was confusing the BIOS settings reset button on the back of a Fatal1ty ITX gaming motherboard for "Loading defaults" in the BIOS. For some reason the graphics card had stopped working, turned out to be that the PCIe slot was somehow switched off in the BIOS. Pressing the BIOS settings reset button didn't work, but going into the BIOS and loading optimized defaults did. I had very nearly returned the card as faulty. I wasted months (elapsed time) trying to get Optane to work on an MSI B360M Mortar motherboard. Turned out the Optane module needed to be in the other M.2 slot. Optane is great once it works but it's a pig to set up as there are no informative unambiguous diagnostic messages. I blew the dust out of my sons PC (Fractal Design Mini C) and returned him to college. Only when I got home did he tell me that the rotational disk drive had disappeared from Windows. Turned out I had blown the flat ribbon power cable out (I think it had acted like a sail) and hadn't realised as it was round the back of the case. I think he went a whole term without that drive - clearly didn't need it. I was "fixing" a build in a BitFenix Phenom ITX case when the side fell off the table. Unfortunately it had the USB connectors on so it pulled the USB cables sideways out of the headers on the motherboard, bending the pins and ripping off the side of the motherboard connector housing. What a stupid design.

Gotta second the cable management thing. Recently bought a second hard drive, which prompted me to check my modular cables on my Be Quiet PSU to see if I needed an additional cable. Turned out that I could move my SSD to a hard drive caddy, change the cable to one that had 2 SATAs instead of just one, and all was good. Extra HDD installed, no extra cables in the case. As for the non-hardware stuff, I recommend cleanly segregating your stuff on your storage. Have one drive for programs and OS, another for data. If not, at least have two different partitions. This will make the process of re-installing much easier, when you can just wipe, clone or copy the respective drive or partition, rather than having to go fishing around for single folders with stuff in them.

The CPU power plugs and the screw next to them are a NIGHTMARE in tight/closed cases. With modern mobos putting a ton of armor next to them, it can be almost impossible to get them out/in without needlenose pliers. Even now with a fully open case it's not easy. I think everyone makes a mistake or in assembly order or forgetting a cable every build though.

If building a mini-itx, do check how high the socket is on the GPU. I upgraded from GSI 970 to 1070 which I think is same size, but they moved socket up high on the board so when the plugs go in they stop you from putting the case lid on. PCpartpicker etc doesn't look at this type of thing for 'compatibility'. Equally, it's amazing how you can squeeze in some quite chunky GPUs into a mini-ITX, just do your research on forum!

Remove your static charge by grounding yourself before touching any components and make sure you are not wearing clothes that build charge quicky (i.e. polyester+wool - this can also mean wearing wool socks on polyester carpet). You don't need to install your components into a case if you just want to verify all components are working, just assemble it sitting on the boards cardboard box and shorten the mobos front header pins with a scredriver to turn it on. Make sure not to bend the loose board when squeezing in the 8pin power plug, RAM or CPU/GPU. Verify motherboard front IO pinout before installing it in the case, since can be tricky to find the right pins in some older cases. When dissaseembling things that use various sizes of scres, instead of fancy magnetic screw holder you can just use an empty ice cube tray, just make sure its dry.

I have done at least half of these things when I was learning back in the Windows 98 and XP days. Additionally I was using some old giveaway parts like mostly Pentium 1 stuff and one of the power supplies was in terrible shape, I shocked myself and made sparks fly with that thing. Exposed wire had touched the case. On the bright side I also learned to use jumpers or even my own soldering on the motherboard to set CPU speed, experimented with heatsinks for the first time, observed system behaviour changes when swapping GPU or RAM or even higher capacity (and to some extent speed) HDD. I also connected them over 10/100Mbit LAN and back then I had no router to provide DHCP. I made it work with a super cheap switch. All very good learning experiences.

Dimitri, Sorry, you are the only one that those things you mention in this video happen to... Just kidding - How abut these?: 1. Having a fan cable stuck under the motherboard that was difficult to install (and to remove) with all the screws installed, the video card installed, and all the power supply cables installed, managed and tie-wrapped down. 2. Having one of the I/O port misaligned with the I/O shield after having everything else screwed down (and cabled=s tie-wrapped of course). 3. Not realizing that you needed to pre-attach the the processor 12v connector before installing the motherboard since the case had almost no clearance to do it afterward. 4. Installing a huge air cooler on the processor chip/socket, then realizing you have it oriented the wrong way and cannot install the memory DIMS. 5. One of the power cables is too short to reach where it needs to reach 6. Over-tightening one of the cable ties, and not realizing that it resulted in one of your cables being cocked or pulled out of a socket as a result (which you only see when you can't POST). 7. Installing the cooler support upside down on the back of the motherboard - then not realizing it until things are well along in the build and difficult to unwind. And, thse were just the ones I could think of in 10 minutes of recollection....

That "I thing" on the PSU is a 1. 25 to 30 years ago relatively few people built their own computers, today it is widely done. First time builders, just read the motherboard manual and look up instructions on KZbin if you have questions

There are basically 3 types of screws in PC building M3 x XXmm, metric size screw for 2.5" drives and 5.25" bay drives 6-32 size (US customary, ANSI standard) for standoff, radiators And self tapping course thread screws for fans that bite into the plastic holes. I always install GPU last after all motherboard cables have been installed

The "reset pc" option in windows is only really handy with oem machines that came with 10 initially, not upgraded. Even then, if a driver issue occurs, it surprisingly does not get rid of every problem as it should be resetting to the day it came out of the factory. Fresh install is always the best option, however, an in place upgrade (say from 1709-1803, etc) can solve many problems as well.

About a week ago, i gave my pc a full cleaning, taking nearly everything apart, remaking my build with different cable routing and everything. As i had spent nearly 3 hours, i just wanted to be done, so after putting the frontpanel on, on the Define R6, putting bottom dustfilter back on and everything, i realized that i had installed an AIO fan the wrong way, so the bottom one was intake in push configuration and the top fan was exhaust in pull configuration. Just rushed through, getting it done right and assembled everything. Finally went upstairs to start using it again, but was confused as to why it was so slow and laggy while doing light tasks. While redoing the cables, i had routed the AIO power cable so it was hidden under the roof of the PSU shroud and forgot to plug it in. Then it finally made sense that the CPU was 100c on all cores at idle. Pro tip : AIO's are terrible passive coolers, plug it in or buy an aircooler
@sh3riff3545 жыл бұрын
When upgrading to a new modular power supply, do NOT reuse the older modular cables from your existing system. Although the plugs are the same, the pin layout on the PSU connection side differs between suppliers. I fried my bootdrive and mass-storage this way. This mistake is easy to make when you keep building, and not a well known with big consequences. Potentially you could also damage/destroy your Mobo or GPU this way. So always solely use the modular cables provided with the PSU. If you have several PSU's be sure to keep the cables separated per supplier.

A few months back, one of my friends used a pcpartpicker build list, and bought all of the parts on it, but didn't look up proper building methods, so when he finished, it wouldn't boot. He called me over to figure it out, and after about half an hour of troubleshooting, I found that he'd plugged the case power cable into the motherboard usb 2.0 header.

The 3 PC's I have made for myself over the past 10 years I have made a mistake with each one... - First PC I forgot the 4 pin cable and had a heart attack - Second PC I forgot the IO shield and never bothered to install it EVER until I recently build a new PC - Sold my old PC with and my current PC I forgot that my new case didn't have a disk drive bay and I was holding the Windows disk in hand feeling stupid, ended up ordering a new OS on a flash drive I have built 9 PC's in total but the mistakes always happen on my own builds so I guess the excitement of a new gaming PC plays a huge part on my ability to focus.
