In this Don't Dream It's Over guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of the chords and guitar solo for this Crowded House ballad.
Released in 1986 off of their self-titled debut album, "Don't Dream It's Over" became their biggest hit reaching the top of the charts all over the world.
The success of "Don't Dream It's Over" is because of it's beautiful vocal melodies, thoughtful lyrics and great guitar work.
We will be using standard tuning for this one, just as guitarist/vocalist Neil Finn did on the original recording.
Pretty much all of the guitar parts require you to play bar chords throughout. The use of bar chords is what allows Finn to produce the snappy rhythms used in the picking hand. By doing the bar chords, you are able to control the muting and timing of each chord more effectively.
If you can play bar chords reasonably well, you shouldn't have much trouble learning all of the rhythm guitar parts to "Don't Dream It's Over".
In addition to those chords, guitarist Neil Finn plays a really cool guitar solo. This solo is great for the intermediate level guitarist to learn. I will show you how to play it phrase-by-phrase.
I hope you guys enjoy learning one of the greatest songs of the 80's! #dontdreamitsoverguitarlesson #crowdedhouse #guitarcovers
Carl...

Thats because you're always in a rush and have no patience, if you dont have much time in your day you are obviously failing miserably in life, I couldn't think of anything worse than having to keep worrying about the time, living life like a slave, no wonder everyone's on prescription drugs, I guarantee you have high blood pressure and can't get it up in the bedroom. Why don't you use that little brain of yours and get yourself a job that gives you more time for you and the family, maybe work from home or start your own business up, then you might be able to listen to the first five min of someone telling you about the song they are going to teach you on youtube, one more thing, if you think your wife loves you more for working every hour to cover the bills, think again, your the typical type of guy that gets cheated on, hope this helps with your future.

Every time I look for a more difficult song that everyone seems to have tabbed incorrectly, your lessons pop up. And every time I think - AWESOME, this dude knows what he's doing and I am good to go knowing that you'll show me how to play it without capos and unplayable chords and all that fun stuff. Thanks man.

Carl, I'm one of your monthly auto-donators and I'm always profoundly grateful for your meticulous faithfulness to each song. Thanks for all of your hard work on this song, it saved me many hours and I still wouldn't have it as good as you. Btw, one can capo on the 3rd fret and still have the exact chords, and it gives the hand a rest from bar chords on 3 separate chords.Respectfully,Hooch

Great job. Only hoped you would have mentioned the change in the first two bass notes of the last chorus after the solo section. It is so powerful as it goes deeper than the usual chorus base and really gives the song a sense of tension release. But again, your lesson is extremely accurate, like you wrote it yourself.

This is a great tutorial, but I’m wondering if the strumming is 100% right for the intro. Watch Neil Finn live and you’ll see he maintains a continuous strum pattern with no pauses, and with some subtle ghost strums. It’s more noticeable in live recordings, but I think the ghost strumming is even present on the studio recording.

Suggestion: I have a slow down app and played the chord at the end of the first verse. It sounds closer playing C and G on the 4th and 5th strings. Other than that, its a great lesson.

Man, I have an electric guitar with heavy gauge strings - it's my first guitar too. The previous owner said he played a lot of heavy metal. It was so hard for me to do solos with these heavy strings - but Im so used to playing them that when I played with normal strings, it was waaayy too thin for me to adapt.

Perhaps an odd question but what is the exact strumming patten once you hit the verse where the vocals come in? I'm playing what I *think* you are but I feel like there is a subtle difference (which may well just be the inferiority of my guitar and amp!) Just keen on knowing that I am definitely playing it correctly
