This is one of my favorite songs! OF ALL TIME! Also, I bought your Fretboard Mobility course, and I'm really excited about it. I've only done the 1st exercise. I can kind of see where it's going with the 2 and 3 string exercises and I'm really happy that everything is just in one place and I have a someone to play along with. I feel like for the first exercise it's a really good speed if you want to keep up with you. Some other people's lessons are a little too fast sometimes, but yours is a perfect balance.

Wow I never bothered to see who played guitar on this gorgeous song. The guitar fills have always been one of my favourite aspects of the song but because they’re so tastefully done and so well integrated with the main melody and Neil’s singing you don’t really think about them on their own they’re just part of the overall song. It’s a testament to Tim’s skill and musical interpretation. In my opinion Neil is one of the keenest and most under appreciated talents for melody both in composition and singing.

I met him while living in Melbourne. A covers band I was in had a remote connection and we somehow got a couple of hours in his private home studio to do some demos. He was smoking a spliff and was pretty cool and pleasant. The truth is, we weren’t really that good but he was encouraging nonetheless. Not long after he hung himself. I hope to this day that those events were unconnected.

Tim, I just have to say, not just in reference to this video, that you are literally one of the greatest guitar players I have ever heard. I can't even imagine how amazing it would be to hear you play a solo for one of my songs.

Mind blown. This is my favourite single of the 1980s. The arrangement and guitar parts on that recording are beyond amazing. Joe Satriani did some backing vocals on this album, too, which I only found out recently as well...

Wow!!! I remember being in a Sydney rehearsal studio in 1984 when the pre-Crowded House band 'The Mullanes' were getting the songs together. This is when they were a four piece with a keyboard player, Craig Hooper. I knew Paul Hester well because I worked at an amusement park with him. I didn't know either Neil (though I had seen him from late period Split Enz) or Nick but they were lovely and approachable

I remember Tim from his Albuquerque days. Way back when, my guitarist friend Lawrence Dominguez said Tim was a great guitarist and Tim's band was playing that night. So off we went, saw his show, I loved his playing and ended up seeing several of his local gigs over the coming weeks. Lawrence was right, Tim is really good.

This was one of the first tapes I bought, as a kid, just over a year before I finally got hold of a guitar. It has since been one of my favorite records and I have always deeply loved the guitar playing and production, in addition to the songs and vocal performances. I've wondered for years if all the guitar work was Neil's. Thank you for the enlightenment and insight, and for your contributions to that record.

One question, if you have time... were most of the guitar delays and reverbs on the album tracked with pedals? Or adding during mixing?

After tuning in to your channel for beautiful and useful lessons, I now discover that you are the source of this iconic song's soul. This song takes me back to my joyful childhood memories. It now makes sense to me why your playing style gives that same soul to Don't dream it's over. Wow. Thank you for this gift!

This is so cool! As a young listener, you imagine what it's like in the studio, how a song is actually made.. But watching you, and others on youtube who worked on great 70s and 80s songs, it's clear that greatness develops like a coral reef of individual, often lesser known musicians all contributing to a solid core... but even there, that core can change a bit from demo to final track. Thanks for these videos!

Well this turned out to be the coolest video I’ve stumbled across in a long time. I saw them live on this tour in Santa Barbara at the Arlington. The 3 piece sounded huge. Vocals were perfect. Neil played a similar solo but did his own thing with it. Didn’t miss the organ at all. Still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen

Huge Crowded House fan here, and I *love* this song -- I actually remember where I was when I first heard it. Saw CH several times, and Neil really does sound great live, so no surprise that he played much of the record. It might be easier for you to post videos of the songs you *didn't* play on. 😁
