For general battery maintenance, Ctek is anything but rubbish! I have been using a Ctek MXS 7.0 for many years now via the proper jumper points and this has saved my butt many times over with old dying batteries! On my E90 and another vehicle of mine, I have the Ctek CTX Battery Sense fitted which is super convenient and easy to keep track of battery state of charge remotely via my smartphone. I get that while my Ctek MXS 7.0 and other chargers in their range (and other brands) do have various modes and a "supply" mode, this will most definitely not be adequate to power the car's electronics in a stable manner for programming, no argument there, but to say that these charges are rubbish especially when used incorrectly isn't fair. The BMW charger (or tender) is a Ctek product, and just about every BMW dealership has tons of them plugged into their showroom cars. Maybe a good idea is to change your video title to specify "not to be used during programming"...
@tonymontana897 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I have been using C-Teks all over my garage. Everything here that has a battery has a C-Tek. The Battery in my E36 M3 lasted 12 years because of the humble C-Tek MKS5.0. I think ole mate here is rubbishing the C-Tek is because some are using them to keep the battery juiced while programming. I only use the C-Tek chargers for the purpose it was designed for. I have no interest in programming so that will never be an issue for me.

On my Z4 that is a 2nd vehicle that is only used occasionally.... I do not see a problem with using it for this purpose (only).... As for programming uses I think that is another issue and the BMW Doctor has mixed up terms and uses....

Yes correct. The heading for this video is absurd 😂 Trickle charging using any cheap battery charger connected to the correct terminals beneath the bonnet is perfectly OK. Plus the fact that every BMW simple instructions booklet provides advice where to find them beneath the bonnet for jump starting or trickle charging and not to connect directly to the main battery in the boot.

So it's basically a high output adjustable DC power supply set to running @ 14.2V and crucially 120A. given average battery chargers run on 10A max, you can see where it can go wrong. CTEK does have a 120A capable power supply, but that cost as much as that voltage regulator thingy, so it's a bit of a moot point.

I used a battery charger (not CTEK but similar) many times on my Dad's Beemer to keep the battery charged when it was parked up long periods with no ill effects at all. A charger is just that, built to charge/recondition/maintain a battery and NOTHING ELSE! As you rightly pointed out, it is not a stabilised power supply. The voltage and current on an intelligent charger will vary constantly so why would you use it for anything else? Electronics, the ACHILLES HEEL of just about every car made in the last 10 years IMO. Sensors here, there and everywhere, all controlled by a computer running, more often than not, bespoke software that a DIY'er can do bugger all with. All in the interests of efficiency and ever tightening emission laws?.......maybe. This is why "modern" cars don't interest me. I'll stick to my 22 year old Land Cruiser thank you, no sensors, engine management, CAT etc, the last model of the mechanical injected diesels with legendary reliability/longevity and it runs like a Swiss watch. Not only that but you can actually see how things work and repair them without the terrifying "take it to your dealer" warning light.

@matthewstrange37785 жыл бұрын
What difference is there between connecting the voltage stabilizer to the connections under the bonnet vs directly on the battery terminals? The connections under the bonnet connect directly to the battery terminals anyway so they're not isolated from the ibs terminal. It shouldn't make any difference where you connect the stabilizer as long as it's +/- correct polarity. Could you please explain the difference in more detail as the connections under the bonnet are for convenience on a lot of vehicles and the safety aspect regarding sparks/ignition of battery gas/vapours when connecting jump leads etc. My battery is located under the passenger seat which is awkward for jump starting.

@rotorblade95085 жыл бұрын
When coding obviously the carger is low power, but for jumpstart whether you connect the rear or the front terminals it should work. If connecting directly to the battery there will be a voltage increase at the terminals from say 10V (dead batery) to 12.5V or if the other car is running to 14.4V. The 12.5V is as if the battery was charges so what’s the problem? Also with 14.4V the high amp cables lead directly to the front I suppose so it’s the same thing, except there will be less power loss if connecting the front terminals because the circuit leads directly to the starter so a slightly higher peak current
@BMWDoctor5 жыл бұрын
There you go you have it in one Herman engineering at its best the reason they have them ports at the front is simply to get the power to the car quickly and safely incase or jumping with no damage done to the car ALSO for programming to not overload the circuit

I have no idea what this guy is talking about. He keeps mentioning programming. I thought the topic was battery tending and charging. I have five vehicles one is diesel and a diesel tractor. All have battery tender brand tenders on 24 7 if the vehicle is going more than a week without being used, especially in the winter. They will even charge a dead battery but it takes a couple of days. All are connected directly to the battery. My batteries tend to last 7 to 10 years without issue. What am I missing here?
@robi43874 жыл бұрын
Your tractor does not have a Power Control Module that is programmed to assess the battery control what works in the vehicle and decide how the vehicle charges its battery. BMW are designed to be charged through the charge points under the bonnet. Programming refers to changing or adapting the factory instructions in one or more modules eg for more power or so the mirrors fold when you lock the car. Dean puts of lots of helpful videos - many of which assume his followers are tech savvy. Keep it up Dean, top man.

What are your suggestion for simply maintaining proper voltage on these batteries? I am not programming or anything, just attempting to safely keep the battery as close to the 14.2V when running, as possible. If I have to leave the car for a while or in severe weather, what type of trickle charger is okay? A 5 amp battery tender should be okay, correct? I know to connect it from the front terminals.

@robi43874 жыл бұрын
Melodramatic perhaps, but Dean knows his stuff he's a pro. Lots of videos and time put into helping out mere mortals. I think Dean's basic point was don't screw up your car with a weak charger, you need a heavy duty power supply. Most people think £90 on an MXS 5.0 is all you need to charge your battery and they may be right, but I'm usually in a hurry so have an MXS 10 and an MC20/100 starter. Neither match the BMW 40 amp workshop PSUs, but I'll leave the real boffins to discuss the merits of fast charging. (Put NOCO, CTEK and RING in the same room and watch the seismometer.) However, CTEK make battery chargers and testers for all levels, wallets and companies. Viewers will notice the striking similarity between the BMW branded charger Dean showed and the CTEK product. The Ferrari version has Ferrari on it. Back to the all levels bit CTEK MXS 3.8 puts out up to 3.8 amps and is good for (forgive me I'm going from memory here) batteries up to 80aH MXS 5.0 puts out, yep you guessed it 5 amps When you get to the MXS 10 things get a bit more interesting because apart from more power to charge up to a 300aH battery, it also supplies 12v nominal. It comes with temperature sensor and adapts the charging to suit. There is an MXS 20 but last time I checked it was about £400-500 and their PRO 120 costs £1,800. Edit: 0 - CTEK chargers MXS 5.0 and MXS 10.0 have a recondition programme and that puts out 15.8v and that probably shouldn't be used on BMWs IIRC there's an issue if voltage goes above 15.6v 1 RT M - All my manuals say charge the car by connecting the charger to the charging terminals under the hood. (This is so that the power control module PCM [in the boot near the fuses] knows what you are doing.) See supplementary note on charging below. 1a - Charge the car by connecting the charger to the charging terminals. 1b - Don't use jump leads to another car it probably won't fry anything, but you know, just in case! 1c - If you feel the need for a NOCO GB40 or 80 or 160 there is probably something wrong with your driving habits (stop reading this and go for a drive) or wrong with your car - see battery drain below. 2 - Use a modern intelligent charger/power supply (one that doesn't spark, one that tests and ramps up the voltage and current in a very scientific way related to whether your battery is lead acid or AGM or Gel or Lithium. If you are running diagnostics you will need a lot of AMPS. How many AMPS depends on the SOC of the battery, whether you can start the car, what you are doing and for how long. 3 - Leave the car on charge to 100% 4 - Don't let your battery go below 50% 5 - Remember that car electronics can cope with system voltage from about 12 to 15v, but don't push close to the lower limit. (Some people say 10.8v but that seems low to me as some batteries are flat at 11.8v.) 6 - If you want your car programmed take it to Dean. 7 - If you want to test the battery - ah no wait this is another subject. TESTING If the car has been asleep overnight the batteries rest voltage will give a fair indication of its SoC. (So to explain. If you have a 2.5mm2 or better charge lead hard wired to the jump terminals, the voltage drop through all the car, lead and multimeter lead will be negligible and if your multimeter is accurate then 12.7LA, 12.8 to 12.9 on AGM is pretty much fully charged. Note If the car has comfort access and you go anywhere near, it might come out of its slumber, touch the handles and the car opens and it's running systems. No point checking voltage now as it has dropped 0.4 or 0.5 volts and its 12.9v 100% is now 12.4 but not 50%. If you have something like a Foxconn tester do not test via the charge terminals as the electronics rely on a terminal to terminal connection. On terminals and a live car, you will get a reasonably accurate result on an old car like an e30, e34 but on an e65 or forget about it there are 70 ECUs on 16 bus systems = a shed load of draw down. What I will downgrade is the CTEK battery sense and simpler LED monitor. These measure voltage but the switch over from green to yellow to red LEDs is too crude to be of any real value. Battery sense is too confusing for most people, too reliant of being within bluetooth range and won't diagnose your car or battery. Buy a Foxconn instead. Don't buy a drop charger, most are so poorly made you might as well put a spanner across the terminals. CTEK do make a tester but IMHO it is not as good as Foxconn and over twice the price. BATTERY LIFE So cheap LAs last only a few years if not looked after. I have BMW AGMs that are 14 yo and they still do the business. Think your battery is dead? Are you sure? No are you really sure it isn't the PCM or the alternator (voltage regulator) Some batteries can be so dead that an intelligent charger thinks they are dead. A useful trick is to have a second dumb charger to fake some volts to get the intelligent charger going. Select the recondition program. Once started it may work wonders yet. SoH = State of Health. Don't panic if it isn't 100%. Batteries are living creatures almost human. Maybe not human, but if you don't feed or exercise a battery. Regular use of the car or charger can bring a battery back to life. The most dramatic case I had was a brand new AGM that a troubled car put into what I would describe as a near death COMA. Removing it from the vehicle, shocking it and putting the MXS 10 on it brought it back to life and it is fine two years later. BATTERY DRAIN If your car is a bit flashy or was in its day, or was a BMW fleet vehicle it may still have a tracker on it. The tracker may be faulty. I have seen cars with two faulty units on and they were not happy bunnies. Supplementary note on charging - some cars have to be in full sleep before you can charge them. Another note - high power chargers get hot in the bulk charge phase and your battery will get warm battery temperature and ambient often different not always possible to get the sensor close - don't sweat it too much. I would do a video on this but I'm not as entertaining as Dean and I just hope this helps anyone who happens to alight on it.

What can you do if your trunk is locked on a f82 m4 and the Electronic disconnect switch (ETS) appears to be activated from accidently conecting and attempting to use a noco genius 10 as a tender. We can't get the car to start we have another ctek and noco 10 we placed under the hood and the noco says it's charged but when we try to start, it appears the battery has disconnected itself from the car.

Is that bmw one ok to just use when storing the car over the winter tho?
@LemonySnicket-EUC3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is. Just not for programming.
@ShowMeWhatINeedToKnow4 жыл бұрын
Is there anything reasonably priced that we can use to just keep the battery topped off in the winter? Or do we have to drive the car around aimlessly for hours when we have no where to go?
@LemonySnicket-EUC3 жыл бұрын
Use the ctek charger for that.

Wow look at that dislike bar. This guy generally has pretty good info. I don't know if this video is bunk or not because I've always used the CTEK and had no trouble on each of the 4 bimmers I've either owned or still own. That said my anecdotal evidence is nothing compared to this guy's who's no doubt had to mess about with more BMWs than I've had to...He's probably right.

Would you recommend or ctek charger or similar to charge your battery once off the car? Or can you use the terminals on the front of the car with the battery in the car. Thanks

Always use the charge points under the hood/bonnet that's exactly what they are there for. RT M.

Where I live, a BMW branded charger from the dealer costs twice as much as the CTEK equivalent. Would you justify the purchase of a BMW one in my case? I'm convinced the internals are the same. It will not be used for programming, just occasional charging.
@BMWDoctor5 жыл бұрын
If you are going to use it JUST for charging then buy this product otherwise do not even think about programming with it CTEK is aload of crap the BMW one is the proper one
@BMWDoctor5 жыл бұрын
Anders Hellquist my friend read your CTEK reviews look up bmw battery charger reviews that explains it all in detail Also the video was merely to show NOT TO USE a battery charger while programming as you have a lot of people influencing people the wrong way when I’m the boss and godfather of this stuff and then there copying me thinking they know whats good and what they should be using If you know me well bro I call anyone out and if I have a problem I deal with it mate you guys knows that about me already many don’t like it and get scared off as many don’t like confrontation but I’m the opposite the same as I am here is the way I am in real life when I have a problem with someone I call them out and go meet them to see what’s up and the problem with me
@ahmedyousry95295 жыл бұрын
CTEK chargers internals are the same as the vehicle branded ones. CTEK is offering it as a white label product to premium car manufacturers. Only difference is the sticker. I've been using the CTEK mxt 40 on my BMW 535i for 5 years now on AGM setting using the correct hood terminals & my battery condition is 85%. (Maybe lucky..:) Totally agree that it should not be used in programming. Even though the mxt40 has a supply function for just changing the battery, it might not sustain the power draw of programming.
@johnmoruzzi72364 жыл бұрын
Ahmed Yousry That’s clear despite what this idiot Ali G is prattling on about... the BMW one is clearly an adapted rebranded CTEK which he says is crap. Confusing nonsense.. blah blah blah....

@bigbadjonrob14 жыл бұрын
Yes, the title of this post is misleading. If you are charging your battery thats fine AND the BMW charger is MADE BY CTEK. If you want to re-program the way your car runs (and you don't know what you are doing, follow his video). The majority of people who stumbled on this (like me) just want to charge the battery - not to mess about with the way the car runs.

Greetings BMW Doctor. Just a quick question? I already bought same BMW battery charger. As I am a seaman, car is sometime not driven for couple of weeks. Can I use this BMW charger for battery charging? Kind regards, Marko.
@stuckinnj95544 жыл бұрын
Marko Susac absolutely, these are float chargers not battery maintainers. What’s, the difference, a float charger is designed to charge, discharge and charge a battery during storage or low use. Typically at 1.5 to 2 amp. A maintainer is designed to ‘maintain’ the battery at 13.6 to 14v during software download or showroom use - these are the 2 most common uses. If your battery is ‘dead’, then you need a battery charger to bring the battery back up to serviceable volt. And yes, BMW as well as other manufactures have partnered with CTEK to private label their battery float charger for the designed purpose. So don’t blame the OE, look into the mirror the fault typically lies with the user. IMHO and informed opinion

@Ally.MacMillan4 жыл бұрын
You don’t use a charger for programming. If it’s just for normal battery charging then most smart chargers are fine, including CTEK. I’ve had no issues with nine at all.

Gee! I am so lucky I don't have a BMW. My old 1996 Jaguar XJ6 has the Battery in the boot and it does not have all these electronics. I have been using a MXS 5amp C Tech charger this Jaguar for years and even extended the battery to 11 years. I have at least 3 C Tech chargers and they have been wonderful for my fleet. Thanks but I don't think I will buy a BMW now.

I have BMW 535i 2013 I get a notification Battery Discharge, recharge Battery, and the mirrors stopped being automatic or acts weird. The dealer appointment closest one is a month and a half. People advised me to drive it around, I barely use this and I traveled a year and came and found this problem. The CTEK to me sounded weird and don’t understand why you need to open the battery when you can use the plugs under the engine hood, because when BMW charges your car they plug cables either from sort of generator or a wire dropped from above (seems like your method but 100kg heavier). Any advice? Should I worry? Or just start moving it around a couple of hours?
