It's always worth shopping around via legitimate sites. Direct line quoted me 50% more than last year for renewal. In the end I got a quote from the co-op via a comparison site at half the price. Pretty big excess but definitely better value. Four days later my windscreen went pop, excellent service via their recommended windscreen repairer.

Great advice, so many scams out here. What re you thoughts on extras like protected NCB that doesn’t actually stop them from putting your premium up if you have a claim, plus uninsured losses etc?

Take al both of those things. Uninsured loss recovery can be highly valuable and protected NCD is not what it used to be as insurers use so much more data these days but in my opinion still worth having.

Insurance is a joke, ive never paid so much in my life. Depends what way you look at it though, my car was 50k and insurance is 1.4k. If i have a crash and its my fault its not a bad deal, you 50k for 1.4k. I just resent it though, full NCB and no points. Im 41 and this year is the first time ever I've not paid my premium in full, always save up throughout the year but i thought sod it I'll keep my money in my premium bonds.

A crash that’s your fault could also have a HUGE third party claim (we dealt with a £3m+ one once) and even an average claim would eclipse about 10 years of your premium. Worse still are people who drive without insurance, they account for quite a lot of your £1,400. It’s expensive because it’s abused by various parties in the industry (such as claims management firms, hire car companies etc), people putting in fake or inflated injury claims, cash for crash tossers etc and the regulator isn’t doing a good job. It sucks at the moment but if you want a car it’s part of the cost.

Insurance companies are also fueling the claims by selling names and addresses to 3rd party when accidents happen then you get these companies calling you about your accident. Very short sited by insurance companies to do this kind of practice. Some have now stopped.

Hmmm, you’d have to ask the GAP broker the question but I’d guess it’s either a no or a higher premium as the risk is higher (give. That the insurer payout would be low on a second write off)
