Oddly it's really close to looking like a Renault Mégane. Same round styling, pop out handles, concealed rear handles in the c pillar, charging speeds and front wheel drive. The Kia is nice but I personally prefer the Renault, with current offers you can get a top trim iconic megane with heat pump and harmon kardon sound system for the same as an entry level EV3. Close call, so would recommend driving both before making a decision.

I am real convert to these new Kia EVs ..... despite the fact my EV9 being in the garage again for its second 12v battery failure .... I have been a Audi, BMW & Volvo driver traditionally but Kia have nailed the design and build quality on these and EV Tech (despite 12v problem) is efficient and easy to use. This looks like a great second EV option for our family 🙂especially compared to the Volvo price point.
@denism663 ай бұрын
The 12v issue has been around pretty much since Kia/Hyundai started building EVs, it's a shame they can't seem to figure this thing out. Tesla used to have this issue but they switched to Li-ion batteries years ago.
@The_Noblest_Roman3 ай бұрын
From what I understand the best permanent solution is to replace the battery yourself with a high quality AGM/Lithium Ion 12v. Kia will keep replacing it with the same cheap 12v batteries they use in all their cars, which struggles to stand up to the increased parasitic drain from all the connected systems and EV componentry. That might be free for the duration of your warranty, but the issue will keep reoccurring and costing you time and inconvenience, and in the end you'll have to deal with it yourself anyway once you're out of warranty. Better to just bite the bullet and shell out of pocket now. (Also I'd probably search that up a bit more first on the owners' forum or Reddit. Definitely don't go buying an expensive premium component based on my "off the top of my head" recollection.)
@Snerdles3 ай бұрын
It's funny. The Hyundai group have been having 12V battery problems since they launched PHEVs and EVs. You'd think they could have figured it out by now. My own Ioniq PHEV has had to be boosted 8 times in 3 years due to random dead 12V and Hyundai claims nothing is wrong. I ended up getting a little 5 watt 12 V solar panel so I can clip it directly to the 12V battery without a charge controller and it sits in the back window which basically solved the problem.
@8-Bit-Retro3 ай бұрын
I'm with you. I've had what I consider to be nice cars over the years - Merc SLK 350, E350 Cabriolet, C300 and 2 Audi A7 Black Editions. Whilst each of these gave me pleasure, my EV6 GT-LINE is a joy to use and very reasonably priced. 220-300 miles on a full charge (which costs £5.40 at home), smooth, comfortable- sometimes too quiet if car park pedestrians are anything to go by. Service every 2 years, and all the tech is part of the car - unlike Audi/BMW etc al, who want another £15k for the spec of car you actually want. Stranger (I loved my A7 BE), the EV6 is the car that has received by far the most attention from passers-by, commenting on looks and just asking about the EV experience in general. Some of the lower plastics are definitely lower quality - my E350 felt like a 6* hotel, but the drive is so relaxing I don't notice it. I'll never go back to ICE - 1 year with my first EV is enough to convert me for life. Only thing I'd miss with the EV3 is the 800V charging system - the EV6 can do something like 226kWh, and I regularly get over 190, so charging stops are short and sweet.
@nfzeta1283 ай бұрын
@@The_Noblest_Roman yea I came across this when I was looking up the hyundai ioniq 5 and realised it was widespread, even some other makers have this problem. In fact with the ICE cars following EVs in terms of entertainment systems and other electrical systems in the cars it may be a problem with most modern cars soon that will be solved by upgrading the 12V batteries usually used to Lithium Ion or even Sodium Ion batteries.

It's a divisive car I feel. When it was first launched, as I was looking for a slightly smaller vehicle than my current XC40 Bev, this looked good and fit the bill. I still think it looks great but when we went to have a look at it, both myself and wife really didn't like the minimalist interior with everything controlled via the main touchscreen and especially not having an instrument cluster or heads up display. I realise most things can be done via Google assist and verbal commands much as we can do in the XC40 but for us it's just too stripped back. surprisingly for a Volvo, the seats didn't seem very supportive and the rear seats are pretty much just bench seats. I'm sure this car will be fantastic for some but for us, it's just not what we want. The price surprised us as well, as if your a cash buyer the price isn't too bad, but if your like most people it's PCP or lease, the monthly cost is prohibitive compared to other manufacturers. It's the same monthly cost as my existing XC40 Pro! I fear Volvo are pricing themselves out of the market for normal people.

I don't understand the obsession with 0-60 times, I find this one of the least important things to me when looking at newer cars. My current super old 2010 kia ceed (much in need of replacing but can't afford it) does 0-60 in about 11.6 seconds and I've rarely wished for it to be better so anything less than that in my mind is plenty enough as long as you're driving sensibly. Family cars really don't need to be able to do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds, that's just bonkers to me. Faster charging would be nice on all these cars, would prefer 150kw minimum charging speed on all cars to keep charges under half an hour, on longer journeys this would also free up chargers quicker at busy times.
@Sulu-d4r3 ай бұрын

Old Leaf with 0-62 11.something. Never really cared as it's 0-30 is pretty fruity. That is the useful place for rapid acceleration for turning on to a 60mph road. Nobody needs a faster 0-62mph than 6secs, even that is more likely to help drivers do something stupid.

Why don’t any of the EV3 reviews mention or review the app ? I had a Tesla the app was great and constantly improved and added new functionality. Moved to a Fiat 500e and the app was rubbish and a source of frustration. I have looked at the reviews of the Kia connect app and it’s not favourable. This would really put me off if it was unreliable or clunky. I know it’s difficult to review the app on a loan car but I think it’s pretty important to get the app right.

On top of my list when it hits the US. Wish the lower end models had the best pump at least as optional.

Great review. Definitely worth a look. No speedo directly in vision so no to the EX30. Must go and test an EV3.

Is there any word on what Hyundai will be doing with their version of this platform? Would this be the upcoming Ionic 3?

Wondering about those cup holders…if you have picked up a coffee eg and putting it down on the cup holders, it looks like a bit of a reach each time to get to them which, while you are driving doesn’t look to be ideal…apart from that I think this car is great

Does U.K. base model not have LED headlights? Need someone to test them.

Shame there's no heat pump as standard and not over enthused on the huge wheel arch surrounds. Ill wait to see in the flesh. Impressed with the standard tech

The heat pump depends on the market. In our country, it comes as standard in middle trim (called 'Earth') with 17' wheels.

Yes they seem to have moved the Piano Black to the Wheel Arches. Yuk

I use a Costa place, just off the motorway which has 2 UltraRapid chargers and has done for years. Loads of McDonalds do that too so not sure what your point of the cafe was about. Yes they are not in the city centre but not far out and getting more every day.
