I think the better advice is do what your good at. Try to isolate why you enjoy certain hobbies in an abstract way and look for career fields, job roles that touches on those interests.

I have a game dev friend, really skilled. He makes half of what I make writing ruby scripts. Some industries will drain you

"Follow your passion" is not necessarily a bad advice. Like every advice, there is always a "BUT".

Imo you're getting career choice and economics screwed up. Cheap labor "India" and ai can replace the whole tech industry. A twenty year old engineer is far cheaper and more skilled and valuable than a 40 year old. If you like a life of drudgery choose a career that you can't stand cause it pays well. Supply and demand is always the key just not obvious to many.

Do you work in IT or how do you know?

Just an old stock analyst who had many friends at IBM and other tech departments. Hear the same story over and over throughout the years.
