We adopted a Chow at our local shelter a little more than a year ago, he’s 8, and whoever owned him before did a wonderful job. He’s so well mannered, cuddly, and loves attention. He’s gentle with children and small animals. A cat came up to me for pets on a walk the other day and he gave her no mind. Just about every Chow stereotype there is he’s the opposite.

In my opinion, there's no such thing as a "aggressive" breed. Every single dog is normal and tolerant of other animals with proper socialization in puppyhood. After that, it will take more work and will not always be possible to rehabilitate and socialize an adult dog. So yeah, these dogs are just an example of what any dog truly is when handled properly - a good boy/girl!

I like that she stopped flexing her jaw as soon as your hand got near. She's trying to get the happy hoodie off of her, or at least move it somewhere more comfortable, but clearly _does not_ want to hurt or attack anyone. It's purely personal discomfort similar to what we'd do if our clothes were uncomfortable.

Anything worth having takes effort and responsibility. I've had Rottweilers mostly and the story is the same. People might doubt it,but if you look at dog bite fatalities they surpass the #1 spot as that's taken by a type and a mix of said type of a dog. Not a uniform or distinct breed. Long and short of it is I wish more people put in the effort like you did. Large and capable breeds aren't accessories, fashion statements or status symbols. Cheers

I think most Japanese breeds are a real pain to deal with. I've heard that shibas and tosas are incredibly difficult. I've got a history dealing with dangerous/aggressive/problem dogs of varying breeds and mixes, and one of the only times I've ever felt truly nervous and imperiled one on one with a single dog was a ~110lb Akita named Kuro that was owned by a reclusive old drunk who was losing his mind. The poor dog was not socialized at all and very protective of the owner (who by then had no hard and fast concept of reality). Sad situation overall, but the dog ended up alright and I didn't get bit too bad.

A family member had an Akita, and because of a house fire, he lived with us for a time while the house was repaired. Morpheus (or Morf as everyone called him) was a big teddy bear. Alert, but quiet, just the sight of him made people afraid, but he was completely approachable even with strangers. The sad part is that the larger breads don't live long enough. Morph began walking in circles and wanted to lie down but couldn't. He was eventually put to sleep and it was a tragic time for so many members of the family, me included. I've had both dogs and cats. If a cat is healthy, it may live twice the age of dogs, but we've had to put a couple of them down, too, and it's been equally difficult losing them. But, pets bring such a joy into our lives that, for me, the joy outlives the sorrow.

The owners properly trained her unlike many owners. I have a customer that has a mixed breed (he's a mutt of some kind), fairly large boy and when they come in he is always shocked because apparently he jumps up on people and drags his owner around a bit. I'll come out from behind the counter to say hello and the moment he even looked ready to just I'll just give a little "Uh!" and point a finger at my feet and he'll sit right down at my feet to get his pets. It confuses the heck out of his owner because he doesn't listen to him. I just told him he has to train him better. I only see him a few times a week at best but he already knows to listen to my commands unlike his owner.

I would say that this kind of research is important for all dog owners. We recently got a Kerry Blue Terrier and the grooming is probably ten times more involved than for our last dog, an Irish Terrier. We knew it would be more involved but maybe not to this extent, so we now try to inform all potential future owners. Gotta love our doggies!

@@JohnnyShagbot Purebred dogs have been bred to have certain behavioral and personality traits. Akitas were originally bred as temple guard dogs and bear hunters. They form strong attachments to certain people and can be aggressive to others. They’re not attached to property like German shepherds. Anyone looking to adopt or buy an akita should be aware that they can be dangerous if you’re not careful or if you get bad blood. They’re very strong, too, so if they do become mean, they can do serious damage. My parents had two akitas. One was a great dog… as long as you weren’t a raccoon or woodchuck. The other murdered a family cat and tried to murder two others. The attack was out of the blue. @evilsharkey8954 Жыл бұрын
@@klarag7059 They’re a Japanese breed. I accidentally used the term “temple” when I meant “palace”. The upper class used them as personal guard dogs, which they are very good at. If your akita bonds to you, anyone who messes with you is likely to get bit. They can be bad with other animals, strangers, and small children, so they’re not a general purpose pet dog like a Labrador retriever. They’re super smart, too, smart enough to be bratty. My parents’ good akita would hang around us outside and then use his ninja skills to get out of sight. If you called for him, he’d stand still and only come if he knew you could see him. He didn’t want to come. He wanted to sniff around the property (5 acres). The problematic female akita was surrendered to the local humane society under the stipulation that she be placed in a home with no other animals and no children under 12 and that they tell us if she was in danger of being put down. They never contacted us, so we assume she found a person. She would have made an excellent dog for a single person who likes to go running. Nobody would mess with a woman jogging with an akita, at least no smart person. On a side note, that personal guarding behavior is why I believe OJ Simpson is guilty. If a stranger had attacked Nicole, her akita would have demolished them. It had to be someone the dog knew very well.

They are inclined to be dog aggressive and have a fairly high prey drive (though nowhere near that of a Husky). From my experience, they seem to naturally dislike same sex dogs quite a bit more. They seem to get a bad rap. They are likely not much different than a german shepherd though far less obedient. They are super sneaky smart… play dumb but they know what is going on.

@@mackennaomara4868 If they're raised around each other from pups they're going to be ok, as well as having an owner that nips any sign of aggressive behavior off at the mere sign of it. We had a female Akita around female dogs and she gets snarly and mean but doesn't outright attack though she has bit out at them. Around male dogs? Nothing. Playful biting which we don't like and stop, but it isn't aggressive. Akitas have a few herding/protective instincts arounds its people too. Overall a good dog, but I can see when left unchecked by bad owners how this breed can get a bad rep real fast.

Bred akitas for many years. I have never met a mean Akita that was not purposely made that way. They are typically gentle giants and excellent with children. Very easily house trained and well behaved. They are usually totally silent towards other dogs. They only bark to alert of new human presence and are quickly won over. Make no mistake though, they can be easily trained to be VERY EFFECTIVE guard dogs. They are susceptible to hip issues and heart worm. On average living about 12 years. One other trait I have noticed over the years, that they all seem to share… is they have memories better than an elephant. They will shower a family member with love and excitement, that they haven’t seen in over 5 years or better. I no longer breed them but still currently have a 4 yr old, 115 lb fawn coat male named Sansei. Just my 2 cents after many years of experience with this WONDERFUL breed.

I couldn’t afford to take my Akita to the groomers very often so we’d sit in the driveway and bond over bushies. The aftermath was giant white tumbleweeds that looked like dirty clouds! My Akita was a rescue I had already known so she came pre-trained. I wish I was healthy and together enough to get another. She was an amazing friend and family member.

Her reaction to the Happy Hoody was hysterical. All frightening looking mouth and teeth dramatics. She's gorgeous & looks amazing after her groom. The way Akitas looks after all that is beautiful - all fluff & softness. I wish I could have you groom our 12yr old Akita. She needs it bad but none of the groomers around me will let me stay with her to make sure she doesn't get too stressed & grooming her myself is literally too physically demanding for me.

Three weeks ago I had to put my 12 year old Akita to sleep.... He had cancer and arthritis but was happy and otherwise healthy. Saddly one night he bit the tumor on his behind and started bleeding out and I had to do what was best for him. He was the best dog I ever had and was always so sweet and gentle and stayed that way even on his last day. I got his ashes back last week and I'm going to plant him in a cherry tree in my back yard. I don't think I'll ever get another dog but I will always love Akita's.

I know the decision was right in my heart. I got signs of confirmation that it was right, and I miss her so much. The love these Akitas “Matagi Inu” bring is beyond amazing! You definitely can make clothes out of shed dog fur, but you should only do it if you live in the coldest places on Earth, because shed dog fur clothes are _so_ insulating, you can easily die from heatstroke if you wear them anywhere that isn’t lethally cold.

Having two Akitas I can Hines say that if the owner takes a few minutes a day to brush the fur it will never get as bad as this. I brush for a few minutes a day everyday and people can’t even believe how little hair I have in my home. When it’s time for their shower I brush very well also. Food and care also make a huge difference in the coats.
