There are so many beautiful beaches in Australia, but unfortunately Bondi would not even rate a mention by most Aussies. The tourists seem to like it though, maybe because it can be reached easily by public transport, who knows.. You probably won't hear this on the show Bondi Rescue, but here is something rarely mentioned. The Bondi sewage treatment plant takes wastewater from half a million well fed Aussies and discharges 130 million litres/day of treated effluent into the ocean. They reckon it's safe, but considering we live in a country full of spiders, snakes ,sharks, crocs and many other deadly things you probably have not even heard of, everything is comparatively safe... A bloke was killed a couple of days ago off Sydney by a whale , so the thinking would be, Crikey, what's the big deal of combing some shredded dunny paper out of your hair! All i will say Carol, is make sure keep your mouth closed or try and floss after having a surf. If by chance you do hear someone yell out "watch out for that black bastard" it's not a racist comment , but simply a warning of a missed untreated turd body surfing into shore. Good luck mate..

As a Queenslander who grew up surfing - first mistake was going to Bondi! It's rubbish and crowded. I've had to help a few backpackers back to shore since I was a kid on the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast, not their fault that they can't read the bloody giant signs everywhere saying swim between the flags. I've never ever laughed or got frustrated with people learning though, they're on the shore break out of the way and we all had to learn somehow!

In the late 1970's as a Yank (Ex-Army) who moved down under as a teacher, I rented a place for $65 a week on Cambell Parade at the north end of Bondi Beach for myself and 13 year old son. You could spot a Pommy a mile away back then... a really bad sun burn ... also some with a "Monty Python" white handkerchief (4 twisted ends) on their heads ... and when the "Shark" siren went off plus everyone was running out of the water, they just stayed there in the surf wondering why?

Dara, loved your act mate. A very good and accurate representation on what it's like to learn to surf. Everyone, including the Pro-Surfers has to go through that stage, but it is easier when you are young. You are wrong on one point however, Ireland has some very talented male and female surfers. Irish surfers not only have to brave the elements, they also take on some of the largest and gnarliest waves on the planet!!! Don't let little things like a board to the face, blood loss and the shark threat put you off. Your future surf sessions are potentially a goldmine of comedy material.

You made me cry laughing mostly because I remember learning but I had more of a clue than you did. My Dad taught me to swim out of Bondi’s famous rip when I was 3 but you couldn’t pay me to surf there, or swim there. I learned to surf before they had leg ropes so if you lost that board you had to get it back. We moved to Shelly Beach Road on the Central Coast when I was 13 and weekends were piling into any surfers van with your board and finding the best waves. That was when life was safer and fun. Thank you.

Surfing bloody tough yakka, definitely underestimated. Unlike snowboarding, skiing or skateboarding, the surface you're on is inconsistent, and obviously an aspect is getting out to catch the break, it's tiring, gives you little practice actually riding a wave for the time put in, and it causes significant injuries. Gave it myself after blowing out my ACL & MCL on a bad wipeout. Mad respect to mad lads who get out on the big big boy waves.

Such a shame the world’s vision of an Australian beach is Bondi. Probably its proximity to the Sydney city. I was at Manly on the weekend and I used to live at Bondi. Admittedly I prefer Manly, but what’s wrong with Bondi? And at Manly they’re too quick to close the beach because of some trifling supposed “danger”. And the other day I put my bag and towel near one of the flags so I could easily find them when I came out of the water - and they moved the f*****g flag!

Oh god I can just see it. You can always tell the tourists from the locals 🤣 that being said though, all of us have looked like absolute nuggets in our time. My best moment was a couple of years ago when I learned the important lesson - bikinis' are not suitable surfing attire. I like to body surf, so I ditch the board and I just swim really fast while relying on my natural buoyancy, I love how I feel the power of the ocean swelling around me when I body surf, and I also have big boobs and very prominent hip bones, so laying on a board is pretty uncomfortable for me. Now, on this day, I was wearing a very cute floral bikini, and a rashy which had long sleeves and a bit of a scooped neck. It was very flattering. But because I'm not on a board, all of the water I'm body surfing over goes under me rather than under a board. But because my rashy was scoop necked, instead of just flowing over my rashy, it flowed into it and created a parachute. Terrible for body surfing effectively, also terrible for keeping a bikini in place. I catch a really good wave, all the way in to shore pretty much and stand up and my Mum takes one look at me and starts to cackle like nothing I have ever heard before. I look around wondering what has happened then look down and realise that my bikini became dislodged and untied while I was catching the wave, and had kinda, plopped up and over the edge of my rashy. One boob cup still in my rashy, and the other boob cup and all of the strings out the front. I tidied myself up and then never wore that combination of rashy and bikini again. Turtleneck rashy's and one piece swimwear all the way. Fortunately it happened at the dog beach, so few people saw.

I learned how to surf at Portland. With a long and gentle surf, it becomes a lot easier to figure out. Bondi is dogshit.

Come to Perth instead or go to Margaret River, we only surf on big whites or do excellent impersonations of Jesus on the water, but better!! -we run across the top if it.

I went to Bondi Beach way back when in December, their summer, and someone came up to me and said, are you Canadian?. And, I said, yes, I am. I could tell, the bloke said, You're so white and pale.

Oh it gets better! Then you finally get out passed the breaker waves. Sitting wsiting for the right kind of wave. When the siren goes off to let you all know there is a shark loose. Yep! So suddenly you must get any wave to help you back to the beach. I like others caught the next wave. But had not learned to stand yet. Surfers going every where. When my friend who was just as experienced as me. Had the same wave but travelling at eack other. I grab my board. And turned it over. Those fins! /Blades ripped into my board. Al I knew from there was, Sky, bubbles water then sand. Repeat, Repeat, repeat. A bloody wahing machine. To end up with Life gaurds saving my life! Badly battered and Grazed, a bloody mess. On a very English Sun burnt body. PAIN! I truely thank the Surf life Savers. I was not at Bondi New South Wales. I was at as I learnt later, at Point Danger Stradbroke Island Queensland. The board was my own that I had just bought! It was now a wreck! I came out better.... Luckily! And Yes there were sharks in the water. I live in Australia, and that was over 50 years ago. Never went surfing again. Aussies have a "sense of humour". They told me that's where the best waves were. They were right! But for very experienced surfers. I did not know the name of the place till later! The wave I caught is called a dumper. As that is what it does to you slams you into the sand below. Crashing and rolling! Stay safe Surfers, where ever you are.

It's not a matter of being confident, but intellectual. Australians RESENT intellectuals. That's why Germaine Greer now lives in Essex. Australia tried to produce a TV show based on QI (Quite Interesting, hosted by Stephen Fry; then Sandi Toksvig). A few 'celebrity comedians' auditioned, but the producers couldn't find any Aussie emcee that was funny, witty, intellectual or urbane enough to host the show -- so they didn't bother trying to put it to air.

I think the Irish never invented surfing, because if they got washed out to sea, well... 🤷.
