Piracy is once again better than the legal option. Funny how things come full circle.
@csdarlington866 күн бұрын
Yep! I used to pirate so much when cable internet became accessible, then streaming came out and it was affordable. So for many years I just used streaming services. Now it’s so split up and expensive I cant afford any of them. So I went back to my pirate life a few years ago.

This is why I started a plex server. Host it for all my friends and family so we don’t have to worry about what’s streaming where or forgetting to cancel or paying for something we hardly use. I just gather all the content and everyone can enjoy it.

One of my favorite music streaming services is actually hoopla which you can get through your library. No subscription costs and they have a pretty good collection of albums. You get a limited amount of albums you check out per month but that encourages you to spend more time with each one instead of mass consuming music and not fully appreciating any of it.

I remember laughing at older generations who spent a lot of money on cable or satellite TV to have access to hundreds of channels and usually watched two or three. I wonder if future generations will laugh at us as those who for many years paid for music they don't have, movies they can't watch, books they've lost access to or games they can't run. I think we have moved too much to the cloud.

If buying isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t stealing. If you wanna support creators then support them directly through donation links or merch

I felt a similar way. Now I've been slowly building up a DRM-free library of music purchased online. It's been great!

You might have talked about this, but how are you playing your DRM-free music and why are you doing this over CDs for instance?

I joined Netflix in 2005. It was much better when you could order dvds. You could order what you wanted and not what they're pushing on you to watch nowadays with streaming.

Another great video Spencer. I really like your final point. I’ve recently been trying to do both physical media and streaming services, but I like how you framed it particularly- that if one ever needs to cut costs, you can pause the streaming services, knowing that you’ll have your baseline curated collection of your favourites. Then the streamers become more of a nice luxury rather than it feeling like they are essentials. Do you have a podcast? I like your channel a lot, but I don’t like spending tons of time on KZbin and think the subjects you cover lend themselves very well to longer discussions.

I have considered a podcast but just haven’t gotten around to it yet - I’ll for sure try to put out a podcast in 2025. Thanks for the comment!

Also, if you’re willing to ditch the cases and inserts an old school DVD binder can hold hundreds of discs in a very small amount of space. You can hide that in one shelf of the entertainment center. All you need is a decent blueray player. Some last gen gaming consoles can be had super cheap and can play bluerays well.
@spencers-adventures4 күн бұрын
That’s a great point. DVD binder is for sure on my radar. Thanks for the comment!

I used to subscribe to a lot of these places but I found that after watching what I wanted to see there wasn't really anything else to watch. As for music I use KZbin music as I'm a premium user and music comes with it. I pay £12.99 for KZbin and £1.99 for OneDrive for my storage. That's it. I may drop KZbin too in 2025 as I'm buying CDs again for music and I can take the adverts for videos.

I don't care much for movie/Tv steaming services at all these days. I only paid for Apple Music ( I also buy Cd's/ a little vinyl ) and my wife only subscribes to one movie/TV service at a time. Makes you more patient for the shows you want to watch and creates fiction which I believe is a good thing.

It's a tricky thing streaming. I've got apple TV and paramount atm and it costs about £17 a month so I'm considering cancelling but I am continuing to watch shows on there so it's an ongoing thing I think 😅

Agreed it can be tricky! From what I’ve seen Apple is the best value of the bunch, but each has something to offer. I think once you finish up whatever you’re watching on one, cut it loose! Hope you’re having a good holiday and new year Adam :)

My 2 pence: having access to all music through a streaming service is so much better than having access to a large movie and tv catalog. I just find there’s a lot less bloat in music compared to a good chunk of Netflix for instance. You make a very good point Spencer about how streaming services allow us to jump around between genres and dip our toes into different things, but, and I can only speak from my experience, I find a music streaming service fantastic for this. Something like Netflix or Apple TV or whatever, I find it’s all far more samey - a lot of top shows all seem to be led by trends. There are a number of reasons for this I guess - studios and broadcasters taking fewer punts for one. Having Netflix doesn’t mean I’m checking out obscure genres, whereas I do this on Apple Music.

But do you really own the media that you are "buying"? Or are you just paying for the "right" to use it in the format that you spent money on? Which makes either option pretty sad.
@PupsiStreams7 күн бұрын
What are you even trying to say man
@spencers-adventures6 күн бұрын
I get where you're going with this idea, and as formats go out of date it does become harder to watch that media. But the reality is that if I own the complete series of Friends, I don't have to worry about which streamer has passed the rights of the show on to another, and chasing around my favourite shows between subscription services.
@mypradasatthecleanerss6 күн бұрын
It’s a very good question
@mypradasatthecleanerss6 күн бұрын
I think it depends on the media. For instance with music, you might prefer to have the CD, but you also can legally rip it to a FLAC file and you own that too and then down the line FLAC could most definitely be converted into whatever file format comes next. The same isn’t true of DVDs/Bluray unfortunately
