2 years later, still coming back to this video every now and again. Been really caught in a rut, feeling like my improvement was just at a permanent plateau, but thankfully I have this still here to remind me that the journey can never be over until I say it is. Maybe I just need to change my approach to learning, maybe I just need more reps, or maybe I just need someone to straighten out my misunderstandings or explain my bad habits that I can't see. Whatever it is, Thank you for making this piece of art, the most inspirational video on the internet.

You will get there my guy try take breaks and also try playing other characters like they're your main but the best advice Is to find someone you know that plays the same game and just fight them as much as you can, my brother and I played each other all the time and after a session with him I'd go back into rank and things were allot easier and more noticeable hope that helps.

@@XxdeathclawslayerxX I play a pretty decent variety of games, between Strive, +R, Under Night, DNF, Granblue, and Blazblue, but in the ones I play ranked in I tend to hover in the intermediate range (higher floors but not Celestial, around gold in DNF, etc). I've been finding a lot of enjoyment from other parts of playing these games though, so I haven't played ranked in a while. Mostly I just play, make art, teach new people, organize events, and have been working on making my own game, all of which have been helping me grow and engage with the genre in ways that are more helpful for me personally than just grinding ranked. It's beenr eally nice!

Alex's story about the TK divekick probably strikes home for a lot of people - I've got something very similar with SFIV when I first started and didn't even really have special motions down reliably. Fei Long's Rekka Ken just seemed damn near impossible to me to reliably finish all the way to the end - 10 years later I now actively seek characters out with rekkas built in whenever I pick up a new game. I'm nowhere near "good" either but it's funny how certain obstacles can define you.

one downside of fighting games is that, it requires dedication and investment of time to learn. I once played a "competitive" Crash Team Racing Online, it was fun at first, mastering the drift mechanic and winning races online was the best feeling. But as soon as I saw dwindling players online and in real life. I realized I just wasted a lot of time on mastering something that won't amount to something. So now, I just play some games that requires less investment of time.

@@francisquebachmann7375 That kinda all non-sense? Fighting game skill transfer over. So once the player base of that game dies out eventually you could just play another fighting game? If a pro at any fighter right now picked up another fighting game they'd most likely still beat you down. They obviously have to re-learn combos and a bunch of other stuff but there is SO MUCH knowledge that transfers over from game to game. It's literally the same for ANY game. The only games that don't require time investments are single player games. If you have online you have competition and no one likes losing. So you either invest time so you win or you keep losing until you uninstall the game. You'll have fun for the first month when you can beat other trash players and once you can't beat down literal children anymore you'll uninstall.

And when I do play even when I lose it's still a great experience, and I always keep going. People who are willing to go I usually have long sets with. Mine is nothing special but something that I actually regret a lil bit. I used to play a lot of competitive games, fps, mobas and even card games, but I never once tried fighting games because I figured it would be impossible for me to approach any game without prior experience in the genre, then I started finding videos from A-core gaming which told stories about incredible moments at fighting games tournaments which led me to know about arcade sticks and how sickly they looked which then led me to EVO streams and fighting games streams, all the while not playing the genre myself, but secretly wanting to be part of it and I wouldn't do anything about it till the season 3 of DBFZ when a friend of mine told me the game wasn't extremely difficult to get into and it would give me an excuse to buy an arcade stick that I wanted so desperately for how sick I thought they looked. That's when I discovered just how much I wanted this, I wanted to play a game where I could see myself getting better without any other factor affecting the outcome other than me as a player. I WISH I had done it sooner, I'm completely in love with the genre and is thanks to videos like this that people find that love. Much appreciated, watched till the end, good stuff.

As a kid, I didn't have a very worthwhile childhood like the rest of them. However, thanks to my stepfather I was introduced to Tekken 3, my first ever fighting game. We would play every weekend and he was incredibly good. Not good as in like he has won Evo titles, but good in the sense that I looked up to him. I remember picking Hwoarang as my first ever fighting game character and crying when my stepfather beat me in a mirror match. What he told me still rings with me to this day, "There are characters, no, games that will feel like obstacle courses. They were made to be difficult to play. But crying about how hard they are won't make them any easier. Learning to understand, accept, and appreciate them will." Now I can proudly say that after years of playing tekken and finally understanding how such a complex character like Hwoarang works, I was able to best my stepfather in a mirror match. It's kind of metaphorical actually; what held me back from being what I am today was me and my ignorance to accept the difficulty of tekken with open arms and overcome those odds. As it stands in Tekken 7, I don't main Hwoarang anymore. I main Miguel, and the reason is because Miguel's backstory reminds me of my own childhood traumas, and his angry "I don't need a flashy fighting style to kick your ass" playstyle is much like the anger I've pent up for years thanks to my past. Of course, I've come a long way since my anger management issues, but playing Miguel helped me realize that I can vent my anger through rushdown. Hell, even his ending in Tekken 7 is satisfying, because he finally gets back at Jin for bombing his sister's wedding in Tekken 6 by beating the shit out of him and let's him live. I don't think Miguel can forgive Jin for what happened, but that in and of itself is a reminder for me to forgive everyone who ever hurt me during my childhood. Both characters mean a lot to me, and they along with Tekken as a fighting game will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you, Stepdad, for exposing me to such a fabulous game. I wish you were still here with me to play Tekken 7, but all good things come to an end. You will be missed, I love you lots....goodbye.....

Just watched this video as I'm starting to get into Tekken 7 and I got to say you are a great videomaker. I love how you explain concepts by telling personal stories and the humor peppered throughout is great. You have the skills of someone who has been entertaining for a long time, and while I've seen other channels do videos with the same overall message I think you did the best job at it. I hope to go through a similar journey to you.

TL;DR: I went back to playing fighting games after a 2 year hiatus because of this video. Thank you, Alex. Hey Alex, this is your first video i watched. It was recommended to me and i'm commenting on it to thank you. Before this (roughly 2 months ago) i was going on for about a year of a fighting game hiatus. I quit due to the difficulty of finding other players, both locally and online (the internet in my region hardly makes it worthwhile to play with other players located in other continents, and fighting games aren't a "thing" where i'm from), even amongst my group of friends i am pretty much the only fighting game enthusiast, and as much as they enjoy them it simply isn't their niche. When i watched this video i got a sense of nostalgia that i stubbornly fought against for about 2 weeks, i lost and decided to hop back on USFIV and to give it one last try, i haven't stopped playing [fighting games in general] since. I don't know if you'll read this, but thank you.

I can't believe how perfect of a timing this video was. I am an about to be 18 year old who has basically been into fighting games her entire life, one of my first video game experiences was the many KoF on the arcades, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 2, and so many games filled my entire gaming life, alongside stuff like Smash (which I do actually consider myself at least good enough at) but I always had this negative loop of feeling frustrated, I always felt like it was a genre I played out of love, nostalgia and tradition for it over the actual fun I got out of it. I am a major visual learner specially with irl experience, so reading through a million imputs, fundamentals or combo lists always felt horrible to me, I always just gave up, DB FighterZ is a game I was always so hyped about, the perfect representation of how Budokai Tenkaichi 3 felt in my childhood....and then when I got it I couldn't even handle how sad it made me feel to play it. It was a constant negative loop of feeling like the genre, the game, nothing was for me, I just couldn't do it, then, I got BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle on switch a year or two ago, and even though I started the same...something clicked with me, Chie is a character that represented everything I loved about these games, stylish combo heavy strings and fast movement and reactions....it drove me to get better and better with her and with the game as a whole....and then I hit the wall again. As my stupid learn while I play mindset came to bite me back, I kept getting curvestomped on online, on everything, and that was the loop all going back again. Until I met someone very special for me...my boyfriend, he is a very experienced fighting games player, we started playing together, and I was finally trying to get back into the genre, trying to get better at it, everything just to have fun with him and to compete healthily with him, there was still those times of frustration when he would really beat the shit out of me and get me on a 10+ lose streak, but thanks to his help and positiveness and reaffirmation, I noticed myself improving, learning and getting better with him. Today was a different and very important day though, I played like two hours with my boyfriend after a while of not touching the game, I got completely cooked as he is very good as a whole, all until he mentioned something to me "I say this with all the kindness in me, but I don't think Heart is for you", the second character that I always used was Heart Aino, and yeah, she almost always was a sitting duck that could sometimes do a big heavy damage that won me games...which is the reason I kept trying to force myself to play her, practicing her just as I did with Chie, I resonated with what they told me and decided to try something new, ended up picking up Yuzuriha alongside Chie and...I won, I won three matches in a row, and even when I lost, the next one I won again, I felt myself getting better and better until we sadly had to stop...that little experience today reignited everything I loved for the game, for the genre, and now this video has only enhanced it even more because it does remind me of where I came, button mashing on KoF not being able to beat Rugal or any kid that came to play alongside me, spamming projectiles as megaman on MvC2, wasting all my supers on MvC3 because I thought Dante's level 1 was sick. Everything lead up to me getting these combos I only dreamed of, winning matches against people I consider very highly like my boyfriend, and...having fun again. With this and the eventual release a few days after my birthday of Jojo All Star Battle R, I am really wanting to get into fighting games seriously for the first time, this passion I had only felt before with Mobas after falling in love with League, I don't know if I will aim as high as I am feeling right now, but I definitely have lost all those feelings of wanting to give up for now, and when JASBR launches, I am really aiming to get good at that game, I want to finally get to a level I can be really proud of, a higher level I haven't touched, and I will do my best to get on it. This video helped me very much on that decision, and I am incredibly grateful for it.

Honestly, this video can be taken and applied to many other games. I love playing Monster Hunter, but there's no competitive community for that series, save for speedrunning. HOWEVER. There's so much that I now realize that I can learn from watching those speedruns, from learning the patterns of the enemy monsters, to learning the moveset of every weapon. Although I currently play casually, I may one day end up finding myself as a speedrunner for that game. And the same goes for sports games like NBA 2K, hell, even other genres that don't have competitive options. Even stuff outside of gaming in general, like learning how to do art. The only fighting game I've really ever religiously played was Street Fighter X Tekken for the PS Vita. I never touched the online play, due to a longstanding fear of playing a competitive mode. But this video makes me want to go and fix my old Vita, or at least find another fighting game, and start playing it. Overall, this video helped me a lot with my self-esteem. It showed me a way to properly utilize the passion I have for something, and that defeats and setbacks and mistakes aren't the end of the world. I'm still a bit iffy on fighting games overall, but this video, man. I hope you found this comment, and I hope you read it, even if it's been months since the video was uploaded. Thanks for showing me, through the medium of fighting games, that I can indeed become the best I can be, at anything, really. Good luck on your future endeavors. I'll be watching this channel closely.

I've seen this video several times(it keeps showing up in my feed for some reason) but damn it does resonate with me. I've for a long time in my journey felt like I wasn't really making any real progress and was still getting cheaped out by my cousins in every game we played and I think that's why I used to play fgs kinda on and off but I think what really helped me was starting to go to locals which honestly was probably the first time I ever felt like I belonged somewhere it's such an amazing feeling to be in a room full of people feeling the same hype as you and just having a blast tryna do some cool shit or see other people do cool shit. A lot of people there also helped me realize my short comings and gave suggestions on what I can do to improve and now I went from being hard stuck in bronze in sfv to blazing through platinum in sf6 and even managed to catch up with my cousins in old games like marvel 2 and cvs 2. I know I'm not one of the strongest players and probably never will be but I still love the competition and I love that feeling of finally being able to do the things I never thought I could do which is why this genre, community, and to an extent terry bogard since that was the character that made me love fighting games, are so important to me

As a 29 year old who's still recovering from injuring both of my ulnar nerves in each arm, what little I was able to do in GGST diminished. Compound some bad habits, new characters, and all these patches, I honestly felt like giving up. Went to KizzieKay's twitch to live vicariously through someone else, and he was bodying people with his 1-week Zato-1. I typed in chat that I wanted to quit, and you were absolutely right, most people in the fgc don't want you to quit. They told me all types of encouraging things (besides one shit head, but whatever, fuck that person). Then this video got recommended to me the day after. All I can really say is thanks, I'll keep throwing myself at this impossible wall just to be greeted by yet another impossible wall down the road, ad nauseum.

Very inspirational indeed. Another person (aside from you good sir) that keep me playing fighting games is none other than good ol' Broly Legs himself. That man doesn't even use his hands to play and is way better than most people could ever dream of being at a fighting game. Although, I have been playing this particular genre off and on for quite possibly over 25 years of my life, (currently 36yo and most likely started my journey with vanilla SF2 on SNES) I have noticed various improvements in my gameplay over the course of all that time. It was not until after the release of Tekken 5 that I started to take time to learn game mechanics of not only just Tekken but fighting games as a whole. Sometimes, you just gotta take a break from fighting games and play something else as to not get too burnt out. Last part here is REAL important, but I'm sure you all knew this.

Here’s some more inspiration… I’m 32 years old and picked up GGST about 3 months ago in May of 2023. Been getting my ass kicked because almost all the players are “God-Tier” at this point. I feel like I’m behind but I can honestly say I’ve seen improvement. The first month I couldn’t get past the 2nd floor of the online tower but now I’m steady at floor 6. Watching videos like this has helped my motivation a TON because you always see the best players being the best but you never watch their struggle (Or even realize they struggle) when they are learning a new game. It helps to see that other people have the exact same hardships you have while learning a new fighting game.

This video opened my eyes as to why I love playing fighting games so much and why I love playing the characters that I do. Especially Ganondorf (My main) in ultimate. He's like a reflection of myself, a character who has a lot of disadvantages and struggles to do anything in the face of obstacles. But somehow, you make him work. You put in the work, grind out the losses, watch the videos, and get yourself to a point where despite everyone saying you can't do it, you can. The tier list doesn't matter in the sense that I really enjoy playing the character and maybe one day I'll make it big at a tourney. But I'm content learning and getting better with my low tier main. Thank you so much for making this video. You've reinvigorated my love for this genre and my determination to continue down my own path with my character.

I think what makes fighting games fun for me is the journey of learning and growing as a player, kinda like studying for an exam you’d worked hard for.

I was looking for a fighting game to pick up and ended up on this video. Bro, the editing with the flashbacks on the armor king fight was SO EPIC that i went and bought 3 fighting games instantly just to see which one i like more! Thanks for this video man!

This video needs to be promoted as widely as possible!! Specifically starting at 08:43 I can never think of an easy-to-understand way to explain frame data to someone unfamiliar with fighting games. This is the best I've ever seen it done. Using visual indicators and comparisons from other genres/real life was a great approach. I feel like just that one part of the video might help a lot of people get past the first big hurdle to enjoying fighting games. Even if it's only to observe fighting games. The FGC needs to spread the word that it's perfectly okay to just watch fighting games. There are so many more people who only watch things like the UFC versus the ones who actually train/participate. Fighting games should be the same way. Amazing video essay and it warmed my heart to see Gerald in there!

Watched this from start to end. Sick editing skills. Hearing that last segment is what I needed to get back into Strive. We may not be the biggest gaming community, but damn we are the most passionate one. if you play Tekken, Smash, Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, KOF, Soul Calibur, DOA, or whatever, just know that you're family here. Rise Up! Fight On!

Every few months I come back to this video. It's such a piece of FGC work that's equal parts motivation, explanation, inspiration and even tutorial. If you could condense love for fighting games in video form, it is this video. Thanks, Alex!

This video is amazing! I've been playing SF since IV and I always gave up after some weeks because I would get too focused in my W/L Ratio, but I'm really looking forward to SF6 and just finally improve in fighting games and be able to generally enjoy them. So I'm really grateful for this video!

Watching this video made me have a different outlook on fighting games. I always played them casually but I always wanted to understand the competitive aspect of learning frame data, practicing combos, and going to tournaments. I live in a small town and I have a few friends that I play games like street fighter v and Tekken 7 with but I'm the guy who "knows it all". They even said I should join tournaments and become a pro

Its not often that my attention is grasped for a 55 min video on KZbin without skipping....curse of KZbin I guess but this video had my attention throughout as if I was watching an episode of Westworld

As new player nervously approaching SF6, this video has a great message! I have a lot of dexerity issues in my hands which makes comboing difficult, but I was blown away when I managed to nail a combo string in training mode! Just doing it once took a lot of tries, but it is possible, and I wanna stick with it.

I finally picked up Tekken for the first time and spent maybe an hour and a half on training with Asuka. Won 3 matches in a row then got stomped HARD, so much that i wanted to quit Tekken forever. Couple minutes later, found this video, and now im glad i didnt delete Tekken. I will pick it up again and reacess what i can do. It's funny how when you cool down and have someone else talk about your points of improvement that you really care and listen. I realized i sidestep too much, and would never thought that was the reason i was constantly being punished. I wanted to have a lot of movement, but hearing about frame data in this video made me learn how to decide what to do. Thanks for making it, i and many others sure appreciate it!!

Incredible, I've had a similar thing with sf5 where I didn't get anything at all, I just threw fire balls and hoped for the best, then I tried dbfz but got my head too stuck into learning high damage combos. And now I finally have managed to crack how to slowly get better with strive. Fighting games can be incredible and this video made me even more happy that I'm sticking with them

DBFZ is supposed to be a entry level fighter but everytime i play i feel like it's the least noob friendly one. I do better in blazblue, melty blood and undernight.

Thank you man I needed this. I keep trying this genre and getting scared and upset at how hard they are and how bad I am. Yet I keep looking longingly. I really want to give Strive another shot and eventually P4U when it comes out on Steam. I want to have fun with these genres and not be results-oriented and upset when I'm bad, don't understand, and make mistakes often.

Got recommended this video after having purchased GGS on the steam sale and I spent 24 hours on a 4 day weekend playing it. I didn’t think I enjoyed fighting games because I didn’t want to put the work in but after having gotten to F7 with May it’s like I’m seeing the fruits of my labor. I still have a lot to learn and after playing so much over the weekend I was pretty burnt out but I decided to keep grinding after watching this video. I feel like even putting a little work in learning the simple things about a fighting game makes the experience so much more fun and Im hoping to get a lot better.
