This is PARTIALLY correct. Immediately after injury you should use ice (the first 24 hours). Afterwards heat and motion are more useful, which is what you're essentially suggesting. But in the immediate aftermath ice impedes inflamation and helps to kick start healing.

Ice impedes the process of inflammation which is necessary to the healing process. However, if there is a lot of pain or swelling, ice can help to relieve these symptoms. Ice is great for the first 24 hours after injury to prevent further exacerbation of injury, but after that switch to heat, gentle stretching and range of motion, and light strengthening and you'll recover much faster. Ice still has its place. Especially for initial swelling. And it depends on the severity. Ice can help delay compartment syndrome until definitive care is received. Awesome information though! Especially the movement portion. But that's if you can move it. Otherwise alternating heat and cold can mimic the contractions.

I dropped a 45lb plate, side down, on the arch of my foot in November. I was walking on it same day, albeit slowly and with a limp. I was lucky that it didn't actually break and that my nail was fine. EXTREMELY bruised, but I used heat and an ace bandage to help me distribute the weight properly while walking. No limp after 3 weeks, back to lifting my normal weights at about 4. I had the 'walk it off' treatment given to me as a kid, which made me extremely stubborn for dealing with big injuries but has now proven to be useful. I literally walked it off. Lol

The premise for icing is that when oxygen gets cold it shrinks, by cooling area, you have a higher volume of oxygen getting to the area for faster healing. Kind of like drag cars using ice boxes to cool fuel. Total repairing potential is higher, even by fractions. That’s the logic.

Also, sodium carbonate CRYSTALS (from pharmacy) wrapped in an old tea towel, and placed over swollen area, & tape it in place overnight-> powder & the swelling virtually gone.Allows you to do the exercises more freely. I’ve used it multiple times. Swear by it. Also cohesive bandage, (in the initial stage) I get from the pet store (cheaper than pharmacy), prevents a lot of re-swelling if you have to be on the foot a lot, & still allows movement. It can be reused a couple of times.

So you didn't "sprain" your ankle then. Severe sprains swell up immediately and cause excruciating pain, often being unable to put weight or pressure on it at all. Don't confuse people and make them think that all they have to do is walk on a beach ball swollen ankle that's in extreme pain for the sprain to magically go away. You got lucky and didn't sprain anything.

Conventional wisdom as I had exoerienced when I sprained my ankle: swelling = lack of motion which prevents faster recovery. Icing reduces swelling and inflammation, which means increase in range of motion which helps to speed up the recovery process. If you put that into consideration, why is icing bad then???

@RylHango
@RylHango Жыл бұрын
That’s correct but heat would have an extremely limited healing effect by increasing the local movement of molecules, rather it’s the body’s reaction to temperature stimuli that is healing
@RadDadisRad
@RadDadisRad Жыл бұрын
Heat causes inflammation which also causes decreased circulation because of the swelling. Looks like heat isn’t really working out for the injured area. You’re supposed to alternate hot and cold. Heat increases blood flow, cold causes the blood vessels to constrict which forces all the blood and fluid in the area back to your core. So when you alternate back to heat your body will push fresh blood to the area. You’ll have less inflammation too.

Animals know to do this in the wild instinctively. They do not lay around to let the area rest. They move gingerly with a limp. One of the reasons for pain is to indicate the level of force to place on an injured body part. This is especially pertinent for tendon and ligament strains. They do not have a direct blood supply like muscles do and require osmosis to get nutrients in and out. That’s why they take so long to heal compared to muscles. Moving the joints will help get blood in and out of the surrounding area which will increase the osmosis. Animals will also fast when injured. This encourages healing as well.

They “fast” because they’re injured and can’t catch or find food as efficiently. They’re not fasting on purpose lol.

When I used to skateboard I would sprain my ankle all the time and always ice it. My ankle is is permanently larger than my uninjured ankle. Could this be from icing it all the time? And is it edema or scar tissue?

I think that's just from straining your ankle so many times bro. No matter how you treat it, if you keep reinjuring the area its gonna get worse each time.

I blew my ankle pretty bad around 2 yrs ago and it's visibly different (bigger) than the non injured one. However, the stronger and more mobile the ankle gets, the leaner it looks, the process is very slow but it is regaining it's "original" shape, kind of. Don't sweat it, work on strengthening the joints and muscles around them and it's gonna be good.
