I'm a retired lineman diyer 70 years old working under familia vehicles in the driveway rain, snow or shine. No fancy tools. I do have a engine hoist, tranny jack , smoke machine, bidirectional scanner and just about everything needed for most repairs not to savy wth electronics

I once got charged $900 for a $600 alternator at a Subaru dealership. I knew I was going to get gouged a little, since dealerships are always more expensive. But this was insane. They didn't even try to hide the price gouging under labor or anything, they had it itemized with the rest of the parts. When I went back and asked the service manager what was so special about this magical $900 alternator, he said that the extra $300 was for a "warranty" on the part. Which was not mentioned on the invoice anywhere. He ended up giving me $200 back for the diagnostic I was charged for that they also didn't tell me about beforehand. But I still got ripped off. I learned my lesson that day to never get work done at a dealership unless it's covered under warranty.

This is a great tip to save money if you plan to pick up parts from the dealership and work on a vehicle yourself. However, if you plan to have the dealership work on your vehicle, and pre-purchase the parts, it’s very common that the dealership will charge a higher labor rate or more hours. Most dealerships have a set price for specific jobs that they have to meet.
