#1 Tip: If you buy a handbag you love, wear it! Too many bags are sitting on people's shelves unloved and if the bag sustains some wear and tear, so be it. At least it will be a used and loved, take Jane Birkin's original Birkin bag for instance.

Completely agree about the chase for perfection, it’s too much. True manufacturing flaws are one thing but variations and normal wear and tear are part of buying and using a handbag. I remind myself that these aren’t museum pieces and it’s not money well spent if I won’t use them and get happiness from owning them.

That is totally correct. If I buy any bag from anyone, I will enjoy it and wear it! I also do not sell my bags if they fall out of favor, and so happy now bc I have one of the first Fendi baguettes made! Keep these lovlies. One day they will be vintage,and also YOURS!

Great tips! One thing to add onto the “FOMO” which I’m personally guilty of is when I’m considering a bag and see “1 left in stock.” Neiman Marcus has brainwashed me multiple times with that one! 😏

Such a great video! In the past 2 years or so I have finally reached the stage in life where I am able to dip into some luxury bag maybe once a year but all the price increases just keep putting chanel & hermes out of my reach and at times I’ve been so upset and anxious that I’ve wanted to rush ahead & just buy and worry later about the expenses. oh man, I thought I was the only one that thought about the price point and the bag every time I wore it! Like you, I sometimes am a bit weary about wearing some of my Chanel bags because if something were to happen to them they would be very hard and expensive to replace since some are seasonal colors/styles.

Hi Amie! I absolutely love this video and found it very helpful, especially the tip about not being too fussy about imperfections. I have been inspecting my bags like crazy every time I take them out, to the point that I have forgotten how to enjoy them. You reminded me how they should make me happy and not stressed! I also agree on not following trends and hypes, but simply buying what I love and what works well with my wardrobe and lifestyle. I would like to add that more bags don't necessarily translate to more happiness. Also, having multiple bags of the same color is fine, as I don't have to have bags in all colors if they don't really spark joy. I also followed your advice to go with a Gucci GG Marmont flap (in spite of it not being trendy anymore) since I don't plan on spending on a Chanel classic flap, but want the look that it has. Great video Amie! I agree with many of your points. Social media definitely makes me think about bags that I wouldn’t otherwise think to get , but luckily I am not impulsive with buying very expensive bags. I usually will only get something I’ve been thinking about for at least a week or a month or often more. In terms of using bags that are very very expensive, it is true that the more expensive and possibly delicate a bag is, the more nervous I am to wear it. However, my husband is the voice of reason and reminds me that they are bags, they are to be used, most things can be repaired, and it’s a total waste of money if it’s sitting on a shelf. I don’t buy any of my bags to sit on a shelf or with the intent of selling them, so if I don’t use them, that is the biggest waste of money. TFS your experiences with us.

As always-a great and well thought out video, Amie! Being a, (ahem), more ‘mature’ collector, my main financial thinking is about being able to enjoy life during retirement. Therefore, my collection is rather humble, as I started getting into the luxury brands later in life. I ADORE what I purchase, but, am never up at night worrying about the costs. The continuous Chanel price rises sometimes make me think I should find something to buy just because prices will go up (mind games 😑). Completely agree with #2. I think the pressure of impending price increase somewhat creates the impression that it’s better to get it now than later and then to work out the finances subsequently. It’s a dangerous spiral. Bags are not worth getting into debts for!

Hi Amy, I am so glad you said that about the imperfections in bags. I love Fendi but I have noticed on many of their bags the locks at the front are slightly crooked. I am very fussy person and it is the first thing I see, however, I love their bags so much that i chose to ignore it. I bought one new and have couple of others from Vestiare. I like to think the imperfections make them unique 😂

Absolutely agree with your points. Am trying very hard not too caught up with the price increase even i had decided i wanted the handbag and am trying to save up for it. Yes, really the case for me as well, i love Chanel handbag but do baby it when i use it. As for YSL, i do baby it too but not as worrying than Chanel. Surely i can relate to this. Oh btw, out of topic, the magic towel for hair which you recommended in one of your video, i purchased it and wow....it is really amazing. It makes my hair dry so much faster and lesser time to blow dry it and so soft to touch. I will get that for my sisters. Thanks for sharing.

I discovered your channel for the first time! Lovely video, descriptions, and commentary. Where do you like / suggest to find pre loved bags? I’m ready to dip my toe in again :) I purchased a LV bag 10 yrs ago and it was so the wrong bag that now I’m a little reserved. I am interested in a Chanel Jumbo or Medium. Great points! Not buying for an imaginary lifestyle resonated with me. For a long time, I wanted the Peekaboo mini, to me it was the epitome of elegance, one that I imagined handheld at formal events. But the problem is I rarely attend any formal events! My social life is casual, my outfits are casual. And the Peekaboo just doesn't fit, and if I bought it, I would just be looking at in the closet. I know the Peekaboo can be rocked casually with jeans and a tee, but that's not my imagined use of the bag so it wasn't right for me.

I just purchased a saint laurent bag. One day i caught myself thinking ‘i wish this part is better constructed’. I love the bag but certain parts just isnt what i want. But then, i realise there isnt a single bag i own that i can call perfect. THE PERFECT BAG DOESNT EXIST… is my conclusion and the way to really enjoying and appreciating every bag i own.

I think the price increases have something to do with consumers expecting perfection. At the end of the day, it's still just a bag. If you can't stomach the increase, best to just walk away instead of going down some rabbit hole expecting the bag to perform magic tricks.

Hi Amie. Could you please make a video on your comfort levels and how it affects wearing your Chanel bags knowing how much they cost? I have a chanel jumbo too, but I'm always mindful of where I take it too, what cities, what parts of london. I made a comment to my boyfriend about how I only feel mostly comfortable wearing it when he's around incase someone came after me! He's a tall strong guy so I feel safe with him. He also made a comment about it saying that it's the value of a car on my shoulder!! and he also is wary. I don't like taking it out to certain parts of the city or think hard before I go on holiday. If I do, I reverse the bag and hide the CC most of the time. But I would love to hear more about your experiences and sentiment on this as it also does affect my enjoyment of the bag too!

I definitely needed to hear #6! My first bag is from LV and I didn’t hear until after the fact that people often avoid bags made in the US because of quality concerns. My bag is made in the US and I started feeling like I made a mistake, but I don’t see anything wrong with the bag and thoroughly enjoy it so I’m ignoring the hate lol.

Do you insure your bags? I'm not sure how financially viable that is but for your large jumbos it might not be a bad idea to insure against severe damage events (dropping it in a mud puddle, etc).

Your 10-year-old Chanel looks excellent! While you were pointing out the wear and tear in the close-up, I could barely see it. Any item is going to wear down, no matter how luxurious a price you paid for it. People expecting it to still look 100% brand new after a decade of consistent use are fooling themselves. These items are meant to be cared for, yes, but still used and enjoyed.

I've always loved balenciaga croc print mini city bags. Because it's sort of a dull patent calf leather, I find it deals with rain pretty ok. Have a google to see what they look like. I like the classic silhouette by far, and they're softer to use, less rigid. I would still pat it dry afterward don't get me wrong! haha.

@@LCHolley It's because the jumbo size is not popular right now, so you can actually get them for significantly less than retail on the resale market. The medium/small flaps still remain quite popular though.

@@ChaseAmie If it's lost or mugged, it's pretty easy just police report and photographic proof you owned it (wore it more recently) along with receipt etc. Large insurance companies don't kick up a fuss about these. But burglaries maybe different.

I have to disagree with your last point. While the bag may currently be going for 7,500, you paid 5,500. When you look upon your bags as future profits you loose sight of the fact that it is simply a handbag which is meant to be worn. Do you leave your wedding ring in its box because of its value? Probably not, because you would never consider selling it for a profit. Its value goes beyond its price point.
