15-20yrs ago, Apexi branded IHI turbos sold unique anti-surge RB stock mount in 550hp & ~750hp(?) sizes. They were very similar to IHI turbos used in R34 GT500 race cars and Nismo Z-tune street cars. I think the most famous tuner car with Apex/IHI was MSpeed R34 time attack race car. Although Mine’s used GT2560 in their time attack street car without issue.

Porsche 930 turbo’s KKK/Borg Warner K27 turbo was taken off a big Diesel engine. Porsche did what tuners do now; put Cummins/Holset or Borg Warner diesel turbo on their Civic. Lol. Porsche didn’t over think things back then. Need a scavenging pump, no worries, put mechanical pump on the camshaft. Boom. I like the factory adjustable cam gears; you just move a pin. And degreeing cam timing by measuring lift, instead of setting up a degree wheel. And the fact they didn’t change the car for about 30 years.

Fun fact: a fix for 271 engine oil smoke at cold start is to fit a banjo bolt with a check valve incorporated to the turbo. I know some American forums mention oil pressure to the turbo, but I've always measured the oil quantity and aimed for roughly 1.5L/min if you have smoking issues when warmed up (a smidge less for bb) on regular high mount stuff. I wish Garrett would get that air foil bearing technology going so you can mount a turbo any which way

Hello Al and Woody, I'm a turbomachinery engineer in Brazil and have a EJ22T GC8 that I want to low mount one day, just for the hack of it, so thanks for the series and information. Following up your troubleshotting process, I would suggest that you take the time to 3D Scan or CMM the backside of the compressor case. Newer ball bearing turbos uses very small clearence between compressor whell and case, to increase efficiency and compression ratio, but this decreases the compressor map area, developing surge events. If, by chance, the reworked anti-surge case presented a 0.6mm clearence, compared to an possible 0.3mm of the original one, this could be the motive of the surge prevention, not the recirculation paths itself. Just a though, only looking to contribute, not to question the extensive work you have done. Cheers!

Great discussion. I remember (attempting to) learn about causes and solutions to turbo surge at school in '78 but that knowledge has long since been lost to a few too many Lemon Squashes. Funny side note: At the time, I was driving a '66 289 Mustang. During our turbo lessons, I mentioned to my instructor, who was the dean of the Automotive Engineering school, that it would be interesting to try small twin turbos on the Mustang. He asked why I would ever do that? I explained that the two smaller turbos would have less mass and therefore spin up faster giving less lag. He gave me an incredulous look, shook his head, laughed and said "Oh, you Goddamn hot rodders... you come up with the STUPIDEST ideas."

Great video :) The Disco Potato will do the same thing in a similar install, had minor choo choo action on the March on the first build. That had both turbos feeding to one tank on one end of the intercooler. In the second build I created a funky carefully designed merge pipe but still fed to the single tank on the intercooler and there were no problems. In the 4WD build the two turbos feed into what is almost twin tanks with only a relatively small "bridge" between them and there are no issues there either. Seems to be one of those things that can be EXTREMELY fussy and tricky to get right!
