PCIE slots can provide something like 75W on their own, so a GPU installed but not plugged in will still run, albeit very shit. It will run enough to post to BIOS, and enough to get into settings and mess with drivers in safe mode, but you won't get any performance out of it

True! Also, ive seen this but dont know if this works for every GPU, but if you plug your monitor in IGPU port, the GPU would still render it but display it with the igpu, i wanted to test my UHD750 lately, but i was surprised to see 400+fps on valorant, turned out in task manager nvidia still did the hard work 😆

Depending on the setting in the BIOS, you can actually use your external GPU through your motherboard HDMI port, similar to how laptops function, essentially by passing the power from the GPU to that port. If I am not mistaken, there is a slight increase in latency, but if you lack HDMI ports, it is a very good solution.
@CristopherYusuke3 ай бұрын
I found the setting is IGPU multi-monitor
@Ficles811256 ай бұрын
Two fun facts there is a lot of GPUs that can run on pcie power alone without separate cables and sometimes HDMI from the graphics card can pass through to the motherboard port which is used most commonly on laptops

The thing is though that the GPU will provide some of it's performance through the motherboard HDMI port (for example) but it won't be anywhere near the same as if you'd put it on the GPU port.

So here's something that people may are, may not know when you don't have the 6 or 8 pin power connector plugged into the GPU, it is more likely going to have a critical error, not realizing that GPU is not drawing any power, therefore, if it is plugged into the PCIE slot it's going to be confused more or less over what's plugged into the slot because it will see that it is not all there and is going to have a critical error and is going to give shitty fps

This is not as bad as one repair I did. Customer brought in her PC and stated that the mouse pointer looked like it was possessed by demons or something. I kind of laughed at this and took a look. At first everything was okay. Then after a few minutes the pointer started to shake and move around the screen randomly. This had me puzzled for a while until I opened up the case and saw what was wrong. Whomever had last worked on the PC noticed that the motherboard didn't have one of it's mounting screws installed. And went ahead and fixed the issue. The problem was he didn't make sure that there was a brass riser under that spot on the board. So they had literally caused various leads on the motherboard to randomly short out to the case. By far the most puzzling issue I've ever seen on first glance anyways.
