I moved here 36 years ago. Such an amazing place to live as a 22 year old. Was more expensive than where I moved from, but it was still manageable, as you generally earned more to offset the cost of living. Now, I'm just about done here. At my most recent job, I finally broke the 6 figure barrier, yet was still basically living paycheck to paycheck. Never came close to being able to afford to buy a place. Now unemployed again, and rapidly burning through my savings. No luck finding another job so far, so will soon be looking in other states, and I'm guessing I'll soon be joining the many others fleeing the state in the next few months.

I've lived in San Diego since 1958 and Miss Emily is not exaggerating. If you love parking lot traffic and , oh, if you go to the grocery store, you have to bring your own bags and pack your own groceries. Most small businesses are bankrupt here and shopping malls are closing up rapidly. I taught school here for 37 years and watched the dumbing down of the school curriculum. We gave up fishing on account of grossly polluted water from raw sewage coming in from Mexico. Fishing licenses are way too expensive here as well. I could go on and on but I need to finish listening to Miss Emily.

I literally never bring bags or bag my own groceries here. Traffic is not as bad as most other large US cities. Malls are doing better here than most other cities. It's all relative. Besides the Mexican sewage problem, San Diego is still a great place to live. It is just too damn expensive!

When I moved out of California, Building Permits add 30% to the cost of a new house in San Diego CA. The permit for my 2700 SF all brick house on a 20,000 SF lot next to SeaWorld San Antonio TX was $5.

You forgot to mention the terrible TRAFFIC in San Diego! I was born and raised in SD and now that I live in Arizona where I don't have to deal with traffic, it frustrates the hell out of me. It's not as bad as LA but its getting there. Also all the big Insurance companies have left California so even if you could afford to buy you can't insure your new home...Allstate, Farmer's, Statefarm and Geico don't offer new policies for homeowners! I have heard sales fall through due to buyers unable to secure homeowners insurance!

Mercury insurance is great for home and auto policies. Yes, gas is very expensive but every third car here is an EV (mostly Teslas). Also, traffic here is a bit dense during rush hour traffic but is not unlike all other large, densely-populated cities. I simply avoid rush hours. Water is expensive but electricity is $0 with solar panels, so that offsets the water bill.

Also the Property Taxes for home owners is taxing many out of their homes now. A realtor friend shared that the only buyers these days are investment groups and developers and this is what’s having a ripple effect on rising prices causing assessment for even higher property taxes which ultimately hikes up rental prices. The high rents are actually reflective of the property owners ginormous property taxes & property insurance cost passed down onto the renter. It’s unsustainable …

I’m a native San Diegan and that was an excellent rundown. I recently read how San Diego now has the highest cost of living, even higher than NY and San Fran, as you mentioned. I was very surprised but not shocked. Real estate prices are ridiculous and so is rent, even if you live in Southeast SD or another ghetto type of area. I make more than $100,000 a year, and although I’m not struggling, I’m not living like a rich person. I live alone and have to pay about 40% of my salary on rent. And although I don’t have to live in Encanto, I certainly can’t afford La Jolla or Del Mar. Car prices have also gone through the roof. I bought a new truck a few years ago, and even though I put $8,000 down on it, my payments were around $540 a month. And vehicle registration fees are ridiculous. I pay about $500 a year on this truck. Food prices have skyrocketed here, even for cheap places like Taco Bell. You have to pay over $10 now for a combo meal. I bought one medium combo meal recently at Firehouse Deli and it was about $20. And I hardly ever go to tourist places here because it’s too expensive. The Zoo, Sea World, Legoland, Safari Park,, etc. I feel insulated paying those prices in my hometown. You’re right about the ocean temperatures. The water is ice cold most of the year. And the waves are choppy. Definitely not resort-like beaches like in South Florida. And parking at the beach is impossible. And San Diego is not walkable or bikeable. And the trolly doesn’t go anywhere near the beaches. Bad mistake with the planning. And someone mentioned like a 5-to-1 men-to-women ratio. That seems right. The women here suck! They are very good looking, but they are spoiled and stuck up. They are unfriendly, standoffish, and kind of leery of being hit on because of the unbalanced ratio of men to women. I think a lot of this is due to the military bases which have a lot more men than women on them. Women here can be more picky and can pick and choose the better-looking and wealthier guys. So if you are good looking, wealthy, and highly social-oriented, you’ll love San Diego. If you’re a regular Joe type like me, even though I’m comfortable financially, although not rich, you’d be better off living in Texas, or Arizona, or Idaho, or more of a red state and not a dark blue state like California. I’ll move to a red state when I retire. San Diego is not a good place to move to when you retire. Your money will quickly evaporate.

I really apreciate your feedback! Average home prices are around $1M, so it takes a household income of about $200K+- but there are some great areas in east county where you can still get a nice home for $750K - or if people want to live closer to the city- buying a property with an ADU can help set off those costs - so many ways to make things work if we get creative. :)

Dude The thing about the women here is absolutely True!!! The woman here are Non Commital transitory Professional Ghosters at best. Even with Good looks, Wealthy, Blah blah blah the women here are a no go!!! I would have to import a girl from the outside to be here in San Diego. This place is got its perks but also has alot of downsides especially when it comes to dating. I am now dating LDR Phillipinas and I could not be happier. I am done with American Women period. I think I can almost say that about the entire nation seems to be that women are falling victims to the Liberation disease of false independence and entitlement which is a lie..Overall though San Diego has good places to live but you will need to come in with a huge investment to live here.

New York has Wall Street, Bay Area has Silicon Valley - there are plenty of high paying jobs that can support the high cost of living in these other cities. SD has none of that. The only reason I’m still here is because I have a remote job that pays a NY salary. People who come here must either already have a lot of money or own a business. There are only so many high paying jobs at Qualcomm.

Can't beat living near the coast in San Diego or in SD county. Most moderate climate in the US, hands down. East of the Rockies you have humidity which brings rain which is nice, but Summers are brutal, everywhere. Then, there's hurricanes and tornadoes, both of which are nonexistent in so Cal, though we do get earthquakes from time to time. However, I've lived in so cal all my life and haven't felt an earthquake in 25 years.

Very sad. When I first visited San Diego in 1976, San Diego was a very beautiful, clean, affordable city. It wasn't crowded, with open land, and clean, unpolluted beaches. It was a city where you could live very comfortably if you are retired. Unfortunately, like most people who are retired, like myself, can't afford or want to live in San Diego anymore. I have lived in San Diego for over 45 years, and I have seen San Diego become a very crowded and expensive city. I will be leaving San Diego for good, which I thought I would never leave. The quality of life in San Diego is not worth the price, including the weather.

I have been living in San Diego, Grantville area for years and call it home. Although I agree with most of what you said, I have not been quite affected by it because I always find my way to succeed. I live by myself, and as a teacher, I live pretty comfortable. However, what bothers me the most is the lack of affordable housing that pressures me to rent forever, and the silly idea that affordable housing are tons of condos in tall buildings that takes away the beauty of the city. Bottom line is if you want to be within 10-15 miles of the coast, you’re going to be paying through the nose and the value for money on real estate won’t be good. Areas to consider would be North County east of the 15, East County, rural communities, etc. where you can still find decent bargains by comparison. The biggest problem San Diego has that wasn’t even mentioned in this video is lack of high paying jobs that would support the cost of living. The tech industry is limited, finance and banking jobs are pretty much nonexistent, if you’re a doctor or lawyer you’ll be fine, but other than that the military and public sector jobs don’t pay that well.

That's because San Diego and I know most people hate to hear this is not a good union town number one number two it's industry real industry is very limited such as Port jobs that can sustain a port city it's non-existent because San Diego realized heavily on tourism so it's not an industrial or business savvy place like Los Angeles or San Francisco that can help sustain a lot of people So it is what it is San Diego will never be a great big city it'll always be this little town south of LA and yes LA has its problems but when it comes to industry they beat us by a long shot and that's sad

Take it from divermike who learned to scuba dive in San Diego. The water is COLD. Divers need a .25 inch (or 7mm next size in metric) thick wetsuit. Surfers use a 2 mm to 3 mm wetsuit even in the summer and with long sleaves. Most divers who can afford them use drysuits with lots of insulation undernearth. How cold? I've been diving in 36F water in San Diego but that was 80ft deep. Typical is around 62F even in summer. In winter there's no laying at the beach in a beach chair, unless you have a fire going. Fire rings are common at beaches in San Diego for a reason. Ditto in L.A. but L.A. 😝

As a real estate agent you must hear stories around the shop of the older agents who collude between listing and buying agent get drive up prices of deals and therefore commissions. We have that partly to blame for inflated prices. And the real estate industry was sued and lost last year for their commision structures tactics. There response was to create some methods by which they could adher to the new rules while keeping up past behaviors in a round about way. No where in the equiities and bond investments market would you ever transact buy and sell of assets where you have to dole out the kind of fees broker, listing agent and buying agent resources involved in deals want.

It offical in who's eyes? there isn't any reference to an external link to official mentioned that SD is what is mentioned here. Not that this wasn't good info, but starting off with the authoritative "officially" prompted me to search for something orffical. "When someone says something is “officially” a certain way, it means that it has been formally declared, recognized, or confirmed by an authority or through an official process. For example, if a city “officially” names a day as “Community Day,” it means that the city government has formally recognized that day for that purpose." hehe again good info though

Number 11: Even if your rich, the stores near the urban center don't usually have a great selection. For that you should go further out where the stores also have room to expand a bit. Why doesn't San Diego expand a bit? Because then it would run into both military base and mountains.

cost of a home in Northern Virginia is about a million as well - i.e. if you want to be in a decent school district - not number 1 school but just average in Fairfax, and Loudon counties of VA, and Montgomery county of Maryland. Though you may get more home for the price - but you don't get great weather! Depends on your priorities. Lawns are the biggest point source pollution in the US - even more than farms. It is actually good not to have a lawn. Conserving resources is a good thing and better for the planet. California seems to be leading the way yet again. You don't have good public transportation anywhere except of NY city area -wanna move to Jersey city for a lower cost of living which is not that low anymore today?

Politicians have taken yet another jewel of a city and totally ruined it. I've lived in both San Francisco and currently in NP. It's a crime what's being done to this gorgeous state. Anything unique is disappearing and in its place are huge apt buildings that look like jails. No beauty, no architectural features. Everything is gray and black. And yes, the cost is outrageous. Your list is accurate and pretty much complete. What scares me is the majority of people walking around thinking this is all "cool". Wonder how they're going to feel when the effects of no border hit their neighborhood. We really can't afford to not wake up or roll over and just accept what's being handed to us. In other countries people unite. Here, it appears most are just concerned with themselves and what affects them personally. We really did let ourselves get dumbed down. Those who haven't I hope ask yourself what you CAN do, and do it. On whatever level. Wherever we are is our home. Protecting it is a main priority in my mind and heart. Thank you for putting out this vid! Good one!

Longtime resident of SD. The median rent for all bedrooms and all property types in San Diego, CA is $3,095 (2024). That includes apartments, condos and homes. Apartments do not cost $5,000-$6,000 a month (unless it is close to beach or Gaslamp quarter). Apartments (2 bedrooms) in good neighborhoods can be had for $2,500 month/ or even a little less. Gas is expensive--high 4's but average most times of the year right at $5/gallon. Ah, buy a hybrid. They get 50 miles/gallon, cutting the cost of gas basically from $5 gallon to $2.50 gallon. Eggs don't cost $8-$9 a dozen. During the bird flu pandemic, when egg prices where high (around the country) you might have paid $5 dozen. You can buy a carton of 24 free range chicken eggs at Costco here for $5 (or $2.50 dozen). SDGE is expensive, but you don't need to run your heat but a few days/couple weeks a year--so, your SDGE bill is about maybe $250 in winter and summer....she already told you, get solar and its about like it was (or less) than in winter. Always drought? Not for the past two years and looking forward. It was snowing in California into June this year. Watering lawns--most people have drought resistant plants and landscaping which cuts H20 use WAY down. My wife took/takes the bus to work everyday to avoid paying for parking downtown. She drives 1.5 miles and parks (free) on the street and took/takes the bus to and from work (her work pays for the price of her bus pass). I drive less than 20 miles a day to work and back (with my Prius, that is a cost of about $10/week). And it goes on and on. This women is bound and determined to stretch out the worst possible senecios about the price of living is SD as possible for some reason. All I can say is I hope it works, because I don't really want anymore people moving here. BTW, It's absolutely gorgeous here. The beaches are beautiful, the bay, the best baseball stadium in all of baseball. The gaslamp quarter--great dining--great entertainment. And, those state/property taxes--they pay for great infrastructure, like roads, bridges etc. The city is clean and has low crime. It's the 8th largest city in the US, and it is arguably the most beautiful city in America.

A Caveat, to those watching this: First, it was recorded a whole year ago. Second, she seems to be exaggerating these prices considerably- I live in SD, and it has NEVER been as bad as she paints it. Third, it’s a year later, and prices have dropped considerably- gas, for example, averages about $4.79/gal, with a $55 bill to fill an average tank. Real estate IS high, but median prices are actually just below $800,000- not much different from ANY OTHER place people WANT to move to. I’ll add that I’m retired, my kids are grown and gone, and my wife and I have no mortgage (we paid it off) or car payments, and we live very comfortably on retirement income of $67,000/yr. That’s well below the National median income. But she’s right- DON’T MOVE HERE. It’s already too crowded!

@@gabrieln3613 Do not know where you get gas but I paid over Five dollars at Arco last week. One of the cheapest gas stations and two weeks ago six dollars at Vons for for brown eggs. We all know San Diego is great loc tion but for the people like you who have a high income you do not have to worry. For people with less income a lot of them are thinking of moving to Mexico to afford to live close to San Diego. There is such a big exit to Mexico they recently raised the amount of income required to move there. Unlike the US they have rules for entry to their country as they should. It is a shame that we are not more like Mexico.

Agree, there are issues everywhere - just sharing the issues I’ve experienced here - I still love SD and raising my family here - but it’s not for everyone

Every City , State and the Nation is in 3rd World status because of Democrats...Democrats Destroy everything they touch...and I am a life long Independent Voter ...and Yes the GOP is Not Perfect but they Put America and it's Citizens First and go after Crime unlike Democrats with Wide Open Borders and Border Czar Harris is to Blame along with every other Democrat.

I live north of Interstate 8 -- not urban, but suburban -- south of Interstate 8 is more urban -- north of Interstate 8 there is a sprinkling of homeless people, the city doesn't fix potholes anymore, and of course the rent is outrageous, but otherwise San Diego is PARADISE -- I don't even bother locking my car in San Diego unless I am at the store (or I'm south of Interstate 8) and there are shady-looking homeless people in the vicinity. But keep making these vidz, and scare everybody away -- maybe the rent will moderate if less people move here.

I agree with you 100%! I’ve pretty much loved between the 8 and 52 myself - close to city life but not in the city
