And I'm also too soft for tiktok so you're not alone. The only thing I'd recommend for you is doing the Maximum Hydration method but SKIP the Cherry Lola method. For best results use botanical products, Lots of WATER (get in the shower and stay there lol), make sure your hair isn't too soft or hard, and keep hair in sections. Pre Poo (Detangle beforehand get you an aloe pre poo product.) ACV rinse Deep Condition (use a balance deep conditioner with protein and moisture) Clay Mask Leave in Cream/Gel/Styler

Agreed. I have predominantly 4a coils, a lot of TRUE 4c coils (ball point pin spring size and smaller) and silky textured 4a & 3c coils blended in my “kitchen area” (from ear to ear & downward to the nape). My TRUE 4c coils are super soft, perfectly consistent 😍 and it’s well defined even without products after being freshly washed. The 4a is high porosity, tangles *very* easily & can be a nightmare because of its in between texture...it mostly requires products before the majority of coils look defined. There is a *very distinct difference* in the size of the 4c coils and the 4a & 3c ones and also in how the hair behaves.

There is a certain hair type that is heavily pushed in the algorithm and even some folks saying that they in fact are 4c in the tags when the curls say otherwise. If you don't fit in the box, your self-esteem gets heckin' glocked. Tik Tok is not for girlies like me, no ma'am. No ma'am. 100%. Tiktok is like the complete distillation of western beauty standards. You get likes for being thin, young and white, with long straight blonde hair. And, aside from the inarguably gorgeous exceptions, the further away you are from those beauty standards, the fewer likes you get. Tiktok is fun, but at the same time, it isn't fun at all.

I rarely use tik tok anymore because it used so much of my time, but when I did it was filled with some history posts, social justice things, couples posts (cringey I know), Muslim stuff, Black stuff, etc.. I rarely saw anything toxic. Of course when starting you're going to have to look up what you're interested in and like posts or like posts of someone who posts the type of content you're looking for.

From my (outside) perspective, Tiktok doesn’t seem to be an app with *any* integrity, it’s the end result of telling a bunch of people who desperately want fame and money that they’ll get fame and money with lies that generate clicks…that sounds super harsh but it really seems like the focus is on attention and not being genuine or real or helpful and actively not caring if you harm people emotionally or physically. Again, I’m sure there’s plenty of people not like that on there, but it seems like the overarching theme

I’m nervous that type 4 people don’t think combs are for them. Combs are for detangling. Of course, you can finger detangle though with the right product and patience, you can use a comb to detangle your type 4 hair. Also, type 4 hair can fall down due to its weight and length. It doesn’t just keep growing straight up forever 😭 Picks are great for building volume though aren’t a detangling tool traditionally. Personally, I’ve had the same shower comb since 2014 and old faithful has been detangling my 4C hair for years without causing damage.

You have to very mindful on what you consume there.
@eo43453 жыл бұрын
I simply don’t get when people say this. Like saying natural skin tone isn’t for everyone. Yes being black means it’s harder to find the right shade for things, skin care isn’t made with us in mind, not to mention racism, but is bleaching the standard? Does that mean it’s black skin is inherently difficult to have and live with. Or is it external factors making it difficult. I’ve never seen anyone name legitimate reasons as to what makes black hair difficult. Styling? Yeah and if the beauty standard was afros, then white girls would say it’s difficult having white hair because it’s impossible to get their hair type into afros or even most of our braiding styles. If your having difficulty achieving a style than just....don’t do it. It’s not that hard, get a wig that u can do it with. Most relaxed girls just wear wigs anyway.

@@eo4345 most relaxed girls have their hair out cause there's a lower risk of matting and tangling. Natural hair takes time to do, and the tighter the coil and coarser the hair it could be a whole day's wash. It even makes sense why most 4c girls wear their hair stretched cause it's better for the hair's health

@@sarahdanforth703 If you are taking a whole day to wash your hair you are definitely doing something wrong. It should not take more than 20 minutes to shampoo your hair and an hour max to condition. My hair is coarse too, and it shrinks a lot. So what do I do? I prevent it from shrinking! And even if I do let it shrink. What’s the big deal. Just detangle it afterwards. So many naturals taking an hour to detangle their hair in a pre poo only to wash their hair loose without sections than detangle it again one by one for deep condition only to take all the twists out to rinse.
@eo43453 жыл бұрын
@@sarahdanforth703 My sister is relaxed and I don’t judge her but my issue is when people try to make up a reason or excuse you don’t need to validate your choice. My sisters hair takes as long as mine to do and it’s half the length. It’s just a placebo affect, people with relaxed hair THINK it takes shorter time because they can’t admit to themselves that they simply ENJOY working with straight hair. When you associate negative things with your hair constantly it becomes longer in your head. 20 minutes to shampoo, 30 minutes to condition. I detangle as I style, which takes me one hour. Done. And my hair Right at the bottom of my bra now. Then when 1 weeks pass I take my plaits down and wear my hair down. Pony tail jt at night so it doesn’t shrink. It’s so easy.

I'd be worried about you trying these because I don't want you to hurt your hair. But I do think someone needs to address the issues that "hacks" like that have on people. Skin care and beauty "hacks" have the same issues where something stupid goes viral and then people try it and it either, A hurts them and they don't understand why, or B it doesn't work and then the person who tried it feels like there's something wrong with them because "it worked in the tik tok so I must be the problem". Some of them are even harmful because they don't teach people what a product is doing so even if you see a result that matches the tiktok you could be damaging your skin. I think you're really trustworthy so debunking some of the hair hacks could be good and educational but just be careful and don't hurt yourself in the process.

Okay, I feel like the only way I can get through my points is to bullet point them. Aka brace yourselves. 1. Stay off of Tiktok. Simple as that. Tiktok, in the best general sense, is the sum up of "where we went wrong". I'm not saying all, but goodness the stuff does trend is something else. Also, it's not a good platform for black women with natural hair. There's false labeling n information, texturism, racism, discrimination, and so much more. Not to mention, videos that talks against it gets taken down without warning. So yeah, it's a no-no. 2. Keep doing your natural hair videos. They're fun and exciting to watch. It's a nice gust of fresh air for others who, too, have natural hair and can now see that there's beauty in it. I get the gnawing feeling when a video doesn't do well, but I'm pretty much convinced that it's because KZbin is a mess and would prefer to showcase crazy over quality. 😜
@eo43453 жыл бұрын
This comment isn’t very holistic. Tiktok is much like every social media app. Everything you stated is true for almost every social media app however the difference with tiktok is the videos e shorter therefore you consume more videos which means the algorithm is that much more precise. And I think it’s the opposite for misinformation, yes there’s plenty of misinformation on there but Natural hair KZbin is WAAAAAY over saturated and it’s mostly the big KZbinrs (usually gurus/stylists that must promote products) spreading info now while on tiktok it’s just regular people who have no incentive to make money off views or product promotion. Yes there’s bad info but it’s not overly saturated and there r no product trends. The only hair trends I see is that trend where you do a puff to that Beyonce song much less polarizing than the no oils trend on KZbin right now

Good luck with the big chop, I cut maybe 12 inches off my hair in my sophomore year a few years ago. Totally worth cutting all that heat damage off (from straightening) to grow my hair back healthy. I’m going to be upfront, I’m white so I recognize this isn’t really my place. I’m a fan of yours, though, and watch all your videos! And I appreciate your point of view! I’m Jewish and have naturally puffy curly/wavy, VERY FRIZZY, dry, porous hair with minimum shine or definition. Like hair that is very much labeled as “ugly” for white girl standards, EXACTLY like Mia Thermopolis’ hair pre-makeover. By contrast, my hair blow dries very shiny and full, with loose curls and will stay like that for around a week. I have blow dried my hair my whole life, and have a lot of ingrained dislike for my natural hair, since frizzy Jewish hair like mine has never been the standard of beauty my whole life. Your bit about people shaming others for not wearing their hair naturally really resonated with me. It’s very strange for me to shy away from having some real introspection about my self-image, but I also love my hair when it’s styled and am happy with how it has looked my entire life. People are so comfortable being like “you don’t love yourself” and I really don’t know where to stand with that!
@cherylmks3 жыл бұрын
Well I'm black and I don't know where to stand with it either. You hair sounds beautiful when it's "done." My hair is beautiful when it's "done," or straightened, but I've evolved to also love my hair in its natural, coily, frizzy state. I love love love my afro, and then after awhile I want to tame it. So I go back and forth. I call it "letting the lion roar," then "taming the lion." I must admit that I feel mentally stronger when the lion is roaring. You may want to experiment with wearing your hair natural to start deprogramming yourself from the negative things you've heard lifelong about your God-given hair. God does not make mistakes. But if you don't want to, that's cool too. It's a journey and you might be surprised at the beauty of your un-blown natural hair with the right products and techniques.

I don't mean to misinterpret or come off as rude or anything but I think this sort of internalized feeling transcends even hair I'm trans and a huge conversation in the community is whether to be "visible" or "stealth". Its a very personal choice. Though in your case it wouldn't be so based on circumstances. The reality is you're always going to have enough time to do what you want with your hair but maybe there is merit in learning to enjoy a different way of having it done. However I will say this: learning to appreciate a version of yourself that is more "natural" or whatever can be a rewarding, insightful experience, even if it doesn't change your mind on your choices. Those are my thoughts, take with as many grains of salt as you feel necessary. Good luck no matter what though!

My unsolicited opinion is that you should not take on attempting to debunk tiktok hacks or combating the negativity of some of the videos. Please protect your peace (and Fluffnugget)! Please just create content that you *want* to do and/or that brings you joy. 🤗 I actually agree with the general statement that "natural hair isn't for everyone", but not for the reason it's most often said. Yes, the hair that naturally grows from our scalps is beautiful and perfectly acceptable. However, not everyone has the time, patience, or willingness to properly care for and/or style their natural hair (or to learn how to), so from that perspective, natural hair may not be for them...yet.

The natural hair movement/community is really a double edged sword. I feel like the core issue is no one is honest about their personal experiences and/or receptive to others. There is so much information out there and it’s easy to be ill informed. Especially when most people who are highly successful on these platforms have hair that is not representative of most of us out there. Of course that doesn’t mean length,density and over all health goals can’t be achieved and there could be knowledge in there for someone. But, it will NEVER be a one size fits all. It gets harder and harder for new naturals especially to understand that concept, because that’s all the content that’s being sensationalized and pushed by media. Not only that, but many of these naturals aren’t honest about the grueling pain of self acceptance, finding what works for your texture specifically and push products that will never work for a vast majority of people. It’s misleading and in turn creates more misconceptions and more scrutiny for a persons personal journey. I just feel like we are so disconnected from our reality because we’re trying to make someone else’s reality our own and they’re pushing that narrative via their content IMO. That’s why I really enjoy your channel because you are so honest about your personal experiences. The ups and downs. And you’re honest about the emotional process of loving and taking care of your hair, which is a side of the process that no one EVER wants to admit. NO MATTER WHAT TEXTURE. (We have all had a good cry in our bathrooms before) Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re so beautiful and the message you’re putting out there with your content is CHURCH. PS - that last tik toc was honestly disgusting. Poor babe is lost and you can tell. She’ll learn the hard way one day and that’s just how it has to be for some people. 🤷🏽♀️

I'm definitely struggling with accepting the length, volume, and thickness of my 4c hair. I had to go through the stages of accepting my natural hair, and now that I've accepted my texture and now that I love it, this is another obstacle I have to face. I have to learn to love my shrinkage and not think that my hair has to be super long and thick to be beautiful. It's really hard since I have a little sister who has incredibly long thick hair and gets complimented on it all the time. It's hard to have a sibling who fits all the American beauty standards for black women, like having lighter skin, longer/thicker hair and looser curls. You are forced to see, firsthand, how society views them vs. you and you can't escape it. I really appreciate every person who's complimented us both instead of just my sister.

Time! Time is all we need! I am a 4a so I do get defined curls but trust me it’s been a 5 year journey from a tiny fro to a wash and go that chills just above my shoulder shrunken. Trust me it’s all time and once your hair is a certain length the weight keeps it stretched! I also couldn’t leave my hair without product for longer than a few seconds but I have wash and go trained (I am high porosity) and now my hair is a lot shinier. Trust me it’s 110% possible it’s just time, routine and patience. These trends are bs. Just do you. But also realize that your hair can look like that with time! In fact your 4c hair will look much looser once it’s longer. It’s all time. Just enjoy the process.
