I came to learn from this poet, Rumi late in my life. And he speaks directly to my soul. No matter your religion, it is love, faith and belief that is the answer.

It's not the literal sleep of the body meant here. But the sleep of spiritual awareness of an enlightened soul. Even after enlightened, there is an effort that's required to keep the light steady & ascending amidst temptations of the night/ darkness/ ignorance. So friends, don't lose sleep but don't sleep after being awakened.

Then go to a quiet place (I go to my closet where it is peaceful & quiet & sit on a comfortable pillow) set a timer for 15 minutes and just listen to the sound of your breath or the steady sound of the air conditioner. Although It may take a few times to be able to calm your mind, you will get there.

We do fasting, not to only stay hungry but also to weaken our nafs (desires) in order to make the remembrance of God EASIER. Think when we are full (stomach) we actually become lazy. For sleep deprived person now wake up for the purpose of his (god) love and remembrance. Scarifying your peaceful sleep only for him.
