If you ride where I live, you better learn this lesson. I live in Cape May County NJ. And in the summer season this is jaywalker central. Knowing that people are going to be crossing the street with their head in their phones means you better know this lesson. It will prevent at the very least an embarrassing drop, or at worst, a pedestrian struck. Vital knowledge Robert, thank you.

Great information. I practiced on gravel today with a guy that's trying to get certified as an international off road trainer. He had cones set for 12' circle. He rode standing up on his BMW 1150. I rode the perimeter on my FLHTP. He was probably shocked that an HD rider stopped got on gravel AND PRACTICED. He didn't know it was the cones that got me. He's going to the UK to get his certification next month. He watches your content and off road. I told him it's all the same. Head and eyes. Practice practice practice.

My first bike was a Sportster. Owned it 3 weeks then get a touring. So I basically learned to ride on a touring bike. It was a huge learning curve, but I got through it, thanks to you and Jerry Palladino. It's amazing how much I've learned from both of you. This video is perhaps your best one. Front brake + turn is something I didn't have to learn the hard way, thanks to your videos. I'm a great rider now, and it's thanks to the time I've put into practicing, but your videos taught me what and how to practice. I would have got there either way, but your videos helped me get there without dumping my bike repeatedly.

Sir, thank you. I dropped a bike before finding your videos. Everyone I talked to told me front break. Get used to the front break. But when you said cover your rear, like my drill Sargent in the army 11b basic training class, it made perfect sense. I bought my bike today and enjoyed it so much thanks to your teachings and advice. I am serious. Your long winded but I am a instant potato generation lol, so by all means don’t listen to me. Thanks again for your hard work and sharing of knowledge. I would have stumbled to the finish line without you. For sure lowered my up to speed from days instead of months. 😊

This exact scenario happened to me while riding a Street Glide this summer. Turning right from a stop sign. I had cleared both left and right and started accelerating, while looking left. Unknown to be, a building to my right a shielded a jogger from my vision and although I was moving she kept on running right in front of me. My right foot was between the ground and the floor board, and I ended up grabbing the front brake. I managed to keep the bike up through shear muscle power and the fact I was at a low speed. This video is spot on. I also traded in my glide for a Street Bob. Lower weight and more fun.

For safety I never liked anything behind me like a sissy bar or rear luggage, when I had my '87 Goldwing, first thing I did was to remove the rear luggage, plenty of room in the side hard bags. That stuff makes me feel trapped in case I had to get off and let go, fortunately it never happened....great tips on braking...............Retired LEO, still riding at 74

I upgraded from my softail deluxe to a 2021 CVO Ultra. I learned quickly that I can’t use the front brake to stop. I never had any issues on all the bikes I’ve had in my life with front braking (70/30) with the rear brake. But a heavy bike like this, all the weight hits that front end FAST. So I’ve watched your videos and have been practicing the friction zone. First time I pulled into a parking lot and U-turned into that very front spot in the friction zone with my wife on the back, she said “damn baby, that was sexy!” Damn right.

Man i almost learned this lesson the hard way a few months back. On a downhill RH turn at a stop sign. Saved it. But NOTED. 😅 On that point. You need more hill content! Most of us don’t live in Texas where it’s flat. I’m in the PNW. My first nightmare was stopping on a hill. Second was no stop and no go up a hill because a car had run out of gas. Omg…. Traffic was uphill. Not at a stop but not moving fast enough to go. Friction zone…. Nonstop.

You are a great instructor. One nitpick is that you showed the technique for a left turn only. In a tight right turn - which is more common than a tight left turn - you'd have a right lean. Using your rear brake would stop the bike quickly but could you then get your foot to the ground before it dropped ? Remember it's already in a lean.

Yesterday I was executing a u turn in a parking lot to get to the spot I wanted to get to. Some lady in a car not paying attention somehow lands up in my path of travel.. I didn’t even think .. came up straight and stopped on rear brake. She never noticed .. I realized I didn’t think about what I did I just did it. Shows that drilling this stuff in whwre it’s a reaction not a thought to not touch that front brake is def worth it. * I will admit I have not spent enough time in the parking lot training. I do always take any opportunity to use the technique when I pull in a gas station or when there’s an open spot in a parking lot of a store I was headed to These techniques work

One of your best videos. Right to the point. You can't stress it enough friction zone and loading the throttle. I'm a new rider. Must have watched many of your videos prior to taking my MSF course last month. Never rode before. 59 years young. During the last day just prior to the final exam I was feeling confident and took a turn and ended up on the ground. I didn't know what happened. The instructor came over and said you hit the front brake. I couldn't believe it. Thank goodness everything was okay, just a few scraps on me and their motorcycle. I got my license but have not taken it out for a ride other than to practice in parking lots. Once I get those hours of practice under my belt and my confidence up then I'll take my Motorcycle on the road. Thank you for all your videos.

This was an excellent example and fantastic content. It is a shame the guys I ride with aren't as committed to continual education of riding a motorcycle. Watching you and Motorman makes every ride a training experience for me. I am riding with your training videos in mind and practice while I am enjoying my rides.

Doesnt have to be abruptly. I dropped my ultra going about 3mph with my head turned to the left had the handle bars turned right and tapped the front brake. I know rookie mistake but I am owning it and know exactly what caused it.

It's worse on a taller bike like an Adv. The suspension compressing and then rebounding when you grab the front brakes will unsettle the bike. Falling is almost guaranteed if the bars are turned a lot and the bike leans past the point of no return. That being said, I use the rear brake to slow down at very low speed but I finish stopping using the front brake, so I can get both feet down. Maybe that's a bad habit.

Yes, practicing in a car on a parking lot, is a thing you should do. When there's snow, that is. That's the only place where you can bring your car "out of control" and practice getting it back under control. Learn how your car behaves, and what's needed. And that's VERY different for frontwheel drive, rearwheel drive, 4-wheeldrive AND the weight of your car. Sadly, and I really can't think of why, that's illegal in Denmark, even at 3 am. It's really stupid.

Great demonstration! Since I started watching your videos I've developed the habit of stopping with the rear brake and planting my left foot. I've noticed that pointing the front tire slightly to the right counters any desire for the bike to lean to the right.

Hello Robert, Great video I had to learn from experience with my wife on the back of the bike. She wasn’t hurt but this is not a good feeling. I was going slow attempting to make a right turn into a parking spot and grabbed the front brake. It happened so fast, my wife landed in the grass and looked up at me and said “What Happened “. Robert do you have a video showing us how to set up a practice course? I been but orange cones but don’t know proper placement. Thanks Robert

that's why i failed my license exam, because i used the front brake when the handlebars were turned. To be sure, i can 100% trust the rear break when coming to a stop when the handlebars are turned, ofc usually they are straight, but if it happens to stop when the handlebars are turned, i can 100% trust my rear break?
