I don't know how property value works in Laos, but here in the U.S., there's no way someone would build their huge house among regular size houses---that would majorly bring down the value of the bigger house. I guess Laos does not have restrictive covenants in neighborhoods when building a house. Nothing wrong with the mix of home sizes, but I am curious as to whether or not property values are impacted. Do you know, Todd?

I live in Vientiane, my sister in law has a huge house, with some lean to corrugated iron roofed houses next door, I think it's her land, it doesn't make any difference to the price of the land.

I think you'll find your answer in your comment. "..in the US, no way would they build a big house next to regular size houses, that would bring their value down too much.." In Lao most don't build with resale value on their mind, they are building their home.. not an investment. They build in an area for many reasons, close to family, location, cost and convenience... not how affluent the area is. You will see all over Laos some very rich homes next to some of the poorest. It's just not something that is important to them. 🙏

@@Murph945 ,, similar to Australia where property values are based on the unimproved value of the land and not the house you build on it.

In London we see the ZIP code snobery every day, big houses standing empty, bought just as investments while good, hard-working people are priced out of the market. Modest home with no mortgage or loan debt wins for me every time.

In the past, I usually went to Laos as part of a visa run but this time spent a week in Laos at the end of June with my Thai family. Not to hard to get around and find transportation as my wife and her inlaws are from Khon Kaen so language is no barrier. We spent a couple days in Vientiane, then took the high-speed rail to Luang Prabang, then Vang Vien, and back to Vientiane. I really enjoyed the trip doing the usual tourist activities like zip lining and trekking through caves and waterfalls. Laos reminded me of my first trip to Thailand back in 2003. We stayed at very nice hotels and want to go back maybe in November We met a couple of nice people from England one was a couple a guy and his wife who were enjoying a swim in one of the lake, he didn't live in Laos but he goes there quite often to spend time with his Laos wife. I would highly recommend going to Laos it is really a beautiful scenic country, with great coffee and friendly people

Eve.. all these rules, regulations and permits you so love and want these poorer countries to have. How do you think that will effect those who live here? Requiring permits to sell anything. Regulations stating you can't have roadside food stalls. How will the farmers transport their produce or livestock? How are people going to fend for themselves. How are they going to feed themselves with all the rules you think they need? The poor have trouble being able to dress themselves now, do you think they're going to afford the permits required to sell roadside BBQ. The permit to sell fruit in the street. Pay the fine for driving their beat up truck to the market? Fines for letting their cattle roam the neighborhood? Who is going to supplement them? You've lived in the west too long with a safety net. Nobody is here to catch these people, and all you want to do is make it even harder for them? Rules and regulations are for rich countries. Not too long ago the west lived with very few rules and regulations too. Maybe all those westerners wanting to move here is saying something about the all those rules! ..and it's not just foreigners who are making a change to a more simple life, many old nationals are choosing to return also. This is what works here.. and if you don't like it, don't come.

Unbelievable how much your neighbourhood has changrd in the last three years or so. As a resident I don't know if I would be really happy about it, but it will probably benefit the restaurant and that's the main thing. 👍👍😊

Houses are beautiful but the roads are so bad 👎 why the government isn't doing anything to help making the city looking better. I love visiting but hate driving on those bumpy road. Hopefully with in the next 10 years they fixes all the roads

Hi Todd,,cool walkabout! Now THAT is a manse. Must be 30,000 square feet,,or maybe 3500 square meters. I dont know,,it just fricken huge. You said Neenee's niece? Is that the sweet and beautiful Tina you're speaking of? Lots of beautiful girls out today,,including striper girl in the intro. I've got a bummer suck thing to tell you about. Friday we had a super rare super wind that blew up a dust storm,,like something from the Sahara desert. Just a few miles west of town,,it caused a big wreck on the interstate highway. 6- 18 wheeler trucks and 17 cars and pickups. Killed 6 people. I knew 5 of them and I haven't heard who the 6th was. A 4 yr old little boy,,,a 22 year old girl that I've known since she and her siblings were my folks neighbors,,her younger sister and their grandmother. The little boys Dad is in intensive care,,as is an 75 yrs old farmer I know well. The farmers son was killed. He was one of the naturally strongest people I've ever met. I witnessed him pick up about 400 pounds and carry it about 30 feet. A big tractor part. Never lifted a weight in his life. I feel bad about this,,for the survivors. More wierd shit from nature,,like we were talking about before. We made the national news and the internet,,but what a total suck thing to be famous for,,,I'm talking about the town. To change the subject,,i wouldnt have minded a cool rainy day,,today.. it was 100f and supposed to be 106 f tomorrow. Enjoy the cool while you have it. Ttyl,,,Marlon

Laos is theoretically a communist country, yet private mansions with poor roads looks like the exact opposite. Big private homes with lousy infrastructure are what you'd expect in the ultimate capitalist state.

There's a lot of wealth in Laos that comes out of private businesses. There's also a huge gap between the wealthy and the poor. Its government is Marxist in theory but its economy is free market.

Also,, Vientiane developed from series of villages along the Mekong. Each suburb, or Ban, as they are called, still has a village chief (called nyai ban in Lao) who is very influential and still wields a bit of power. Depending on the village chief and his 'committee', depends on how infrastructure is built and maintained. You can always notice the more affluent suburbs by the quality of the infrastructure (like roads etc). From what I understand, money is raised through land tax which stays in the village. Although some is dispensed to the city. The more tax raised, the better the roads. It's the land that has the value. That's why you see bamboo shacks built next to mansions. Another thing, the Lao don't borrow money to build their houses. They tend to pool their resources with other family members and build their house in stages as funds become available. That's why it could take several years to build a house.
