Totally fabulous - brought up in England with this music- 6 weeks every year on Inis Oirr, birthplace of my Mother - saw Planxty play there in 1973 when I was 14 - an everlasting beautiful memory now that I am almost 60 😱

In the summer of 2004, I went out to Inis Oirr with my wife and two young daughters. I remember it as a stunningly beautiful place, in the day we went cycling, and in the evenings we sat at the pub below our B&B, listening to fine folk music sessions. This was the summer after Planxty's Reunion Concerts in Dublin in the spring. I bought ALL the CDs. Slainte! ;-)

(slide guitar), ... (mandolino), ... (contrabbasso), ... (percussioni)...

Extraordinary performance of the ancient song titled "CUNLA" for the Nemeton TV series "Transatlantic Sessions" which sees a real 'no official name' supergroup, led by Donal Lunny (bouzouki and vocals) with Aly Bain (violin), Nollaig Nì Chathasaigh (violin), Michael McGoldrick (uillean pipes), Donald Shaw (keyboards), Russ Barenberg (guitar), ... (slide guitar), ... (mandolin), ... (double bass), ... (percussion)...

The generically jazzy synth part detracts from the verses, I think. But the wailing pipes starting just after 2:30 -- thrilling. Overall, marvelous. I love everything Mr. Lunny does.
@adventureswithaurora2 жыл бұрын
As far as that jazzy synth, at least it's better than Celtic Woman's sudden funk interlude in "Níl Sé'n Lá"! 😬😅

Christy Moore sings this in English on a Planxty album - I actually prefer Donal's version,his gravelly vocals are like Irish blues!

Is as gaeilge é! An bhfuil na focail le fáil áit éigin? I love the Planxty version (I play it on mandolin), and would love to give the song its dues if I sing along. Also, should that double 'n' be there?

Great musicians all. I used to see Russ Barenberg (guitar) in the guitar shops when he lived in Boston in the 1980s, was it?

Why include Sam Bush, as great a mandolinist as has ever played the instrument, if you don't give him a chance to play?

These performances were recorded by the best Irish, Scottish and American talent. They were all together for days or weeks and not every musician got a chance to solo on every tune. The one constant throughout these sessions was Donal Lunny. It was his baby. The best leader in the business.
