Thank you for saying it “Its Just a piece of paper”

It is. I think the big problem people have (especially employers) is that they value the piece of paper and title instead of the actual learning that the employee learned.

An expensive ass piece of paper. I’m still crying over it, as I search my couch for pennies to get lunch. I wish I never went to college. I hate my life, I’m in so much debt. If there’s anything I regret at this point in life it’s going to college. I’m more depressed and disadvantaged in life than I ever was. It doesn’t make sense. They told us if we work hard and graduate college we can have decent lives. But that isn’t true. Not anymore.

@@shhhh6174 As someone who hasn't attended college or university, I can feel you. I am in the same boat looking for a high-paying while working in retail for nearly a decade. Many jobs these days have hiring systems that will automatically disqualify candidates if they are not meeting their requirements and you won't even pop up in the hiring managers page. Also, some HR or hiring managers these days have filters so they can eliminate certain applicants.

Education allows you to pursue more opportunities and makes applying for a job much easier. That being said, I didn't finish my college degree and yet was able to land a job just by doing well on interviews. It made me realize that experience and education with a little bit of luck goes hand-in-hand, but the most important thing for HR to even consider you is your soft skills. You really have to impress them and show that you are capable and the best candidate for the job.

This has to be one of THE most inspiring videos I have seen on this topic. I have done event planning for a major investment bank and a major healthcare organization (each position for 10 years) and I am yet again on the job market due to downsizing. Once again I feel vulnerable because I look at both of the roles - 20+ years of my life - as "happy accidents" or "good timing"rather than what they are: a wealth of information and experience. Thank you for restoring my confidence as I navigate the stressful world of job-hunting. I truly appreciate it.

Interesting and new to me. In India, the major stress is on degrees. I hardly know of any organization that hires technology experts without a Bachelor's degree. In the last few years, the company HRs have started insisting on school mark sheets and bank statements of the last couple of years along with degree/PG certificates. Vacancy details too insist on candidates who scored above 90% in school and university. I have come across people with commerce backgrounds having excellent coding and analytical skills, working as a developer but growing slowly compared to his/her Tech degree counterparts. Education/Degree is good to have but sometimes I feel experience, skill, the willingness to constantly learn and grow, and dedication are more important. Book knowledge is not enough. I could be wrong, who knows.

I have a college degree, and about to receive my Bachelor's degree in December 2018, and it's very challenging to get hired or get a job offer. I guess my work experience might not be attractive enough to employers. I want to try to modify my resume into a functional resume. I just need the opportunity to acquire new experience on the job. It's not easy to find that employer that would give a chance. Applicants with directly related experience may have great advantage.

Usually college denotes capacity of abstraction and capacity of synthesis. Strong training in working with elevate concepts. A work which requires tons of capacity of synthesis is the work of a pilot. Many passengers planes crashed because pilots were dumb as stick. With hundreds of people on-board.

start doing something... read a book, watch a video, volunteer. just do something. First thing study up everything you can think of that you will need to know. The internet and library will make it very possible to get home schooled. You will need lots of discipline. The biggest threat to succeeding this way is, and it's a big is, "you will not have deadline to complete your personal assignments!" (That would be in the form of learning your desired job and researching and writing about it). If you can do all this, I am sure it would show a highly valued trait called self-discipline and God like mind over matter if no professor has to threaten to flunk you because you played video games instead of studying. Next is confidence like a heavily armored knight in the presence of a dragon. Your armor will be all the knowledge you possess! The less you studied up the more that dragons going to get you. That dragon is your conscience telling you that you really don't know about the job you wanted. Look for inspirations like for instance how Bruce Lee became famous for his style of Kung Fu. If he can do it so can you. But you must possess the same passion for your job as Bruce Lee did for Kung Fu.
