You information on the Flight review is incorrect. When doing a flight review in controlled airspace, when filling for permission from Nav Canada you can select an option that says “Flight Review “ which allows a Basic pilot to submit a request.
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
Sorry Lauren, but a Basic pilot CANNOT submit a request for a flight in controlled airspace, even with the activity "Flight Review". Nav Drone support got back to me immediately with the response, "In regards to flying in controlled airspace, there actually is not a bypass for that. Only a pilot with an advanced license may do so."

@@Cranedude666 ask Nav Canada. My only guess is that it can be used by the flight Reviewer when they set it up for the candidate.

@@Cranedude666 That doesn't sound appropriate. The correct behaviour of the tool is that it should allow a pilot with a Basic certificate to submit a flight plan with activity code 'Flight Review', with a further requirement that the Flight Reviewer name be provided as well. They missed a rather important use-case. My opinion.

Thanks, Mike! I like them too! But so many questions demonstrates the needless complexity of these regulations.

The first, class C permission, question came up during my recent flight review. My reviewer told me that NAV Canada response time depends upon how close/high you’ll be to an active runway. If I’m planning something in line to 35L, they’ll want to know more info than if I’m 6 miles away to the west of the airport but still in the class C airspace. Glad you brought this up. I can’t recall if you had this in your Advanced playlist.

Like your videos! For question 1, what would be the minimum time in advance you would need to apply for permission in the NAV Drone or Drone Pilot Canada App in order to fly in a control airspace with your advanced pilot certificate to make sure you can fly on the day scheduled. Thanks in Advance!
@DonJoyce9 ай бұрын
Thanks, Annie! NAV Drone is now the only way to apply for and get permission for flights in controlled airspace. Some parts of the grid within control zones allow for automatic (near instant) approval from NAV Drone if you are flying below their ceilings. If you are planning to fly higher than the ceilings shown on the grid, approval can take anything from a few minutes to a few days, depending upon NAV CANADA staffing.

Interesting to see what the rules are in Canada compered to Sweden, where I'm based. We have many rules too, but in many cases it is easier to fly here, however some of your rules are better than ours. Thank you for sharing an interesting video🙂👍

Hey Don, when it comes to getting permission to fly in controlled airspace can you use just NAVCANADA, or do we also have to radio/call air traffic control? and do we need to keep a radio on us at all times? Thanks for all the great content :)
@Cranedude6662 жыл бұрын
Most permissions in controlled airspace may only require a phone call. Follow the instructions in your confirmation from NavCan. ATC generally doesn't wanna hear from you on radio unless it is a dire emergency !!! Always monitor the MF if possible ...
@DonJoyce2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sophie! This is a bit tricky because the AIM guidelines on this have changed over the years. The latest AIM, seciont 3.2.35 and 3.4.5 says you must contact all aerodromes you are flying near, regardless of whether they are in controlled airspace or not. So, getting your NAV Drone permission is required for controlled airspace, AND you much contact the aerodrome if you are within the 5.6 km circle. You can phone or radio, but you must have a ROC-A certificate to radio. Listening on the radio is recommended, but not mandatory. Hope that helps. I'm going to be putting out a video about the latest changes in the AIM and this will be one I'll highlight.

@@sophiesmith9446 Gotta remember...most radios have very limited transmit/receive distances. Unless you right by an aerodrome...chances are a tower may not hear you..but other aircraft might (and thus may cause confusion on the MF). If you have a flyaway ... 121.5 will get everyones attention !!
