Donkey Kong Country 2’s history is a collection of stories, tales of mythological proportions. One of the oldest speedgames alive today, it has a rich history reaching back over 15 years. A literal epic, the stories told about Donkey Kong Country 2 paint vivid images of struggle and triumph, star players and underdogs, a clash of ideologies.
A story where legends never die; gone, but not forgotten. A fitting story for one of the best games of its era, Donkey Kong Country 2's speedrun history is a fable for the ages. Gather round the fire, and allow us to regale you with tales of speedrunning past. This is the history of Donkey Kong Country 2 speedruns.

Oh my god! THAT'S ME! THAT'S ME ON THE SDA FORUMS!! So yeah, hi there. I remember starting that thread forever ago, wanting to speedrun my favorite game of all time. Nothing ever really came of it for me, as history turns out, but wow. It's wild to think my little thread kickstarted this entire history of speedrunning this game! I'm going to enjoy the rest of this video now, but great work =)

This one always held a special place in my heart... Back when I was 6, I received this game for my birthday, along with a bike. Much to my parents' likely chagrin, the game was more appreciated. But for 6 years I could not get past either Screech's Sprint or Animal Antics, as they were just too difficult for me. The feeling of elation when I DID pull these off, and 102% with them, was very cathartic. Years later, around when I was planning the start of my LPing channel (about 6 years ago), The Completionist announced a contest to speedrun this game to 102%. I had seen a guide for such on GameFAQs before, so I gave it a go. By following that guide, and with many reloads, I finally matched its time of 1:36... which was enough to win the contest. While I never did receive the poster part of the prize, the copy of Kingdom Hearts 2 was rendered redundant by the 2.5 release, and the video announcing my victory was taken down due to the falling out with his co-star, that achievement marked a major evolution in my gaming skills, and my first Internet claim to fame.

Love your videos Speed Docs! One suggestion - when someone is being interviewed, could you keep their name and description up on the screen for the duration of them speaking? I often watch your videos while doing other things, and when someone new starts talking I go to bring up the video but the person's name had already slid off the screen, so I had to stop and rewind, which is annoying. Thanks for all the hard work you and your team do to make these videos :)

Overall, great little doc you’ve put together. I’ve watched a lot of the speed running docs that have come out lately (summoning salt etc.). You should keep making them but my only request/advice I would give is to convert times when the difference is something like starting or ending the timer at a different point in different regions. Just convert the times to what will become the modern standard. Otherwise I’m now having to mentally shave off 19 seconds every time you talk about the Japanese times here. Yes is more effort on your part, but small things like that add tons to production value. I bet most people would agree with me, and your rivals/contemporary’s in this genre of KZbin video are already converting time in this way. Bismuth, Karl Jobst, Speed Docs, summoning salt. They all convert times in situations like this, and they are the big boys of the genre
@GopherChomper
@GopherChomper 3 жыл бұрын
Lol this is the speed docs channel, I’m dumb but Jobst/Summoning Salt comparisons for the timing conversion is correct
@SpeedDocs
@SpeedDocs 3 жыл бұрын
We typically will do that in our videos, but the situation is a little different here. J timing is really relevant in the second "act", that range from 2010 to 2013 or so, where it's exclusively Japanese runners at the top. When the hand off is made with reflected, we make a point to tell you the converted time so that you don't have to do the mental math. After the J era, we never go back to J timing, so you don't have to worry about conversions again
