My local arcade back in the 80s had crazy Kong. I probably played it for a good year before I knew there was a Donkey Kong. Man, I miss the 80s.

I discovered Crazy Kong when I was little, and my family went to Canada back in 1983. I played it in a Sheraton hotel in Toronto. I thought it was kinda weird, but it was actually easier than the real Donkey Kong. I rediscovered it in the 90’s when I installed MAME on my PC. A few years ago, I learned that Crazy Kong wasn’t actually a bootleg, but authorized by Nintendo because they couldn’t keep up with the demand for Donkey Kong machines in Japan, and allowed a third party to run it on different hardware.

Nintendo wasn't able to keep up with the demand for Donkey Kong machines. They contracted with Falcon to make "Crazy Kong" but only to distribute it in selected areas, which Falcon did...for a while. Then they started distributing the game where they weren't supposed to, in Nintendo's distribution areas and beyond the scope of the contract they signed.

Nothing can beat the og donkey kong. One of the major problems in the Crazy kong, is that the sounds are high pitched and annoying to the player. Good video by the way! Have a great day Retromantra!!🤗

Imagine if this had carried over into the '90s. Crazy Kong Country would probably look like an Atari 2600 game

Nintendo originally contracted with Falcon help them keep up with the demand for Donkey Kong machines, something Nintendo wasn't able to do on their own. Falcon was licensed to distribute Crazy Kong machines but only in certain areas, which they did for a while. Then they started distributing the game in areas reserved for Nintendo, beyond the scope of the contract. I like the game, especially the "hi-ya" Jumpman sound effect.

I never understood the purpose of Crazy Kong. It's an officially licensed version of Donkey Kong but has inferior sounds and strange colors? I'm guessing the hardware needed to produce it was a lot cheaper and that they could sell Crazy Kong machines for a lot less money to operators? We had both games locally when they were new. I chose to play the original game mostly for the same quarter.

they were meant to be jp exclusive due to demand for DK. then falcon made the decision to illegally release it stateside and got sued by Nint
