@TheJackster255 жыл бұрын
@Zeksteve It's expected. People think stock suspension is garbage but in reality its much better than most coilover systems. You need hours and track testing and adjustment to actually match stock suspension. Moral of story? Upgrade the tires and wheel setup before even touching ur suspension bolts folks.
@blue04mx535 жыл бұрын
@@TheJackster25 I agree.I am novice to all this so, all I know is what I've seen on youtube and what people have told me trackside. So far everything I've seen about coilovers seems to emphasize the fact that they are adjustable for different tracks and track conditions. I hope someone can point me to a video about how to decide how to adjust them. What factors do you need to consider ? What do you look for on track that helps you decide how to adjust them. And is it easy to adjust coilovers during a track day? Another thing they didn't do or talk about was whether or not they needed to do an alignment after the coilovers were installed.

@driftchaochao4 жыл бұрын
Blue 04 MX 5 before adjusting the suspension set up, you first need to have proper tires, tire pressure, good ride height, alignment and corner balance. KW for instance, they provide you a recommended setting. It’s usually a good starting point. To test if the set up is right for the track you are driving, you need to pay attention to the car behaviour during corner entry, mid corner, corner exit. If you get entry understeer/oversteer, then you need to adjust from compression and rear rebound (1 at a time), if you get exit understeer/oversteer, you need to adjust front rebound and rear compression (1 at a time too). In mid corner, it is then related to spring stiffness & anti-roll bar.
@driftchaochao4 жыл бұрын
Blue 04 MX 5 everything is related to vehicle dynamics basically. And there are bunch of stuff to learn. For example, lowering a car can lower your center of gravity, but your roll center also drops at the same time. And it drops more than COG. That actually increase the distance between COG and roll center, which results more roll. Body roll is not a bad thing and does not affect load transfer, but it is bad for your alignment and aero drag.

When you consider a 100 HP gain on the Evo would cost you triple that for all the parts and tuning, I’d recommend getting the coilovers as one of your first big mods since the benefit to handling will make you much less likely to accidentally wreck your car Actually, I ramped a ditch trying to avoid a deer and they held up fine and I still had just enough ground clearance to avoid damaging anything. For every modification you need to have the “TÜV” acknowledge and certify it with that very car. It’s expensive and without proper papers going with the parts you put in, which have to be specific to that very model of car, you won’t be able to get it certified and therefore couldn’t put it into your car (without losing insurance and basically be driving an “illegal” car). Great video, I really enjoyed the level of effort given to keep the cars evenly matched. I feel though the testing might have been a bit flawed. The true value of great suspension is its ability to keep the tire planted on the ground for consistent traction while cornering or accelerating. While the slalom course was a great choice for the testing, a slalom course with much wider longer corners with areas of uneven road would really allow the value of adjustable rebound and compression to really shine. Imagine, during a long high speed corner you encounter a bump. The suspensions ability to react to and get the tire back on the ground quickly while not upsetting the balance of the car makes the difference between losing a few inches off your line and meeting the outside wall. Round 2 please.

FYI, Anyone buying the cheap coilovers may consider upgrading the rear springs with a $200 12k rate option spring from BC or Megan (also Eibach makes a pair to order for reasonable money and allows you to keep the lower rate but have a longer spring). All options allow a normal ride, which is worth a lot of improvement to the ride and performance. But note the stiffer spring options may run the shock into the ground earlier than the basic Ebay offering.

11:26 "aw dude that's better, right?" "I don't think so" This kind of reminds me of the time I ran over a deer skull in my old car and somehow severed my ABS line, I just was like "we'll call this an upgrade, just like the exhaust leak". Toyotas just don't seem to stop no matter how much you drive them, as long as you're driving them to begin with. I let that car sit for 3 weeks once and it felt like it aged more in those 3 weeks than the 3 years I'd owned it. Was a 2007 and I was able to sell it for a decent sum and that sumbitch is still on the road. No one looking for used cars in that price range right now is that concerned about things like that as long as the car isn't gonna break down

This is an awesome show guys. I was just getting ready to replace the suspension on my AE86. Wanted to know if it was really worth going for the top of the line parts. I’ll save my money and go for something middle of the road but built with quality after watching this. I’ll use the money I save to get some decent seats. Thanks Donut!

I think the point made above was really interesting about the idea that adding coilovers is automatically better: the OEM parts are designed, tested, redesigned, retested, etc. etc. for that car. Seems like if you're going to go down the suspension route, get something specific for you car and have it properly set up by someone who knows their shit inside out.

It’s a cool test but there’s some issues with the experiment itself. 1. Suspension fine tuning, alignment, and corner balancing wasn’t utilized. New Coilovers means the alignment on the car isn’t balanced anymore. A proper alignment and fine tuning will make the car handle on a dime. 2. The test was pathetic to say the least. They did a moose test and concluded that it determines how well the suspension handles . The KWs weren’t pushed to the limit. The test would have been better if ran on a race circuit or a canyon road. 3. The heat in the tires over time plays a role on grip. They did however get the conclusion right, expensive Coilovers are beneficial and worth the money for people who care about how well their car handles. If you’re looking to just lower your car and cruise around, the expensive Coilovers aren’t necessary

I know I'm late to the game, but would love to see a revisit. Just installed $300 adjustable Coilovers on my Ride, and after adjusting as I wanted, I was amazed at the ride quality. SOLID cornering and Handling. The coilovers definitely lacked something in the fit n finish aspect. I even had to use knuckle spacers to get a tight fit, but ride quality is definitely there.... makes me think about budget choices moving forward.

Coilovers that cheap would actually do worse than stock for sure. They should have bought a new oem set as I bet that would probably be the wisest choice
@ksull724875 жыл бұрын
I agree. OEM or Mid to Upper end. Especially is your cars a BMW M2 or something. My car has aluminum hat discs etc. Used for heat dissipation anything aftermarket will be solid steel. As a BMW guy I prefer ceramic pads. BMWs are a break dust magnet. The car was engineered that way. The stock BMW pads will bite better than a Ceramic retrofit. Depending on the car and what your trying to do usually stock is the best option. At 2,500 for coil overs just start saving for a Lamborghini or something more performance oriented than a 350Z. Lol
