I would say it’s a good 50/50 on hail guys that have the skill to do it from route type experience but being too lazy to put much effort into side panels as they could fix a whole hail panel for more $ in roughly the same amount of time vs. hail guys who only learned how to fix hail and have no experience at all with side panels.

@@pdub62 thats true cause I have experience in both retail hail and route cars and when I work in a shop I see more experienced hail techs struggle on certain panels sometimes even drilling holes but guys who have experience in both dont have that issue but they are sometimes slower at hail. I think it’d be interesting to see the pros use the “budget” tool kits and teach Zach at the same time. This may help the newbies see just how far they can get on a budget setup before needing to step up to the higher end more specialized tools. In the case of PDR I’d say it’ll take a lot of time, experience and skill before one needs to start spending a few grand on tools let alone 25+

I had some minor dents that I wanted repaired before I plasti-dipped my 2000 4Runner a year ago. My goal was never perfection, I just wanted the reduce the dents enough that they wouldn't show through the plastidip, so I bought a kit on Amazon and went about it very carefully. It was a humbling experience, but I saved some money and didn't ruin any body panels, so I'm calling it a win. HOWEVER, it if weren't for my unique situation, I never would've DIY'd this and absolutely would've hired a pro.

@@Omega11998822 could you paint the Mona Lisa? You could try and see how good your results are, you might be happy with it, or you could ask a professional artist to paint you the Mona Lisa, if they are good then you will not be able to spot the difference between theirs and the original Mona Lisa. Now if that artist has to try and make your painting look closer to the Mona Lisa, than it will take them more times to go over your mistakes and sometimes they will have to start over on a fresh canvas from the beginning. None of this DIY stuff should be overlooked as it can be great for learning new things that might save you in a pinch and doing some TLC on an vehicle will up it’s value not only for you but also for the next owner if you sell, and yes, it might be bittersweet if it’s final days are as nails, at least you learned some tricks for the next car👍🏼

As a pro myself, this is a tough question to answer. PDR Training (where we all start) is expensive and meant for anyone wanting to do this for a living. If you only want to do this part time, as a hobby, or just for your own repairs - it would be overkill on the budget. And PDR is difficult to learn. You need to spend years just to get "decent" at it.

I'm stoked that you guys are going as complete as you can on these cars and incorporating video content to accomplish both wins at the same time. It would be awesome to be able to see a collection of the cars that you guys have transformed and also see how restored and far they can come from what they started as. Really great to see these useful topics, it doesn't matter if it could be common knowledge to the hardcore out there, you guys have a great teaching and presenting style so its always useful information even if it might not be new information. Thanks!

I am a super perfectionist and would feel comfortable doing this myself. I got rid of a huge dent on the box of my truck from when my mom hit the side of the garage door years back. I bought a suction cup for carrying glass and used that on a large portion but had to tap it from behind with a rubber mallet to get rid of a wrinkle. That said I should have made a tool like that out of rear or some 1/2 round stock and tapped the end to make it accept inserts I could make for what I need.

Once upon a time, a deer slid into the side of my car and placed a giant dent on the door. I put some soap and water on the dent and pulled it out with a plunger. It wasn't perfect but it was one of my crowning achievements.

I used to be a detailer at a pretty big dealership here in Omaha. The dealership's contracted PDR company would sometimes use one of our bays if we had room and the body shop nextdoor didn't. Watching those guys work was like watching a master sculptor creating his next masterpiece. The sheer focus and concentration in their faces was something I'd never seen. They'd bring in a hail damaged car that looked like the surface of a golf ball, and make it look like it was brand new. Of course, they'd wash those cars themselves after they were done. We shidiot apes weren't going to be the ones to ruin the hours of painstaking effort they'd just put in. PDR is truly an art form, and it takes a lot of time and patience to be good at it. These dudes performed miracles.

nah not one already painted the color the rest of the car is. if you COULD find a new fender for the EXACT model and body style AND its the same EXACT color AND its cheaper then $600 you got lucky af. worth a shot but have that $600 saved for the dent removal pros. BUT if you can get REALLY lucky and find a nice one from a junkyard or something... itd be a steal of a deal. but fat chance of that lmfao. especially a miata. but if i actually care enough about the car to care about a dent, im hiring a pro to fix the dent instead of having a new fender painted

Loved this. My son wants to fix some dents on his old truck. Considering a diy kit like this. Told him about my really good experience with PDR. So I started looking up videos to show him. Found this one. Low and behold the pro featured is Jason from Never Dent. This is the guy I used! I’ve used Jason twice on my newer truck and highly recommend him. Still might try this myself with my sons old truck but then again I might just call Jason and see if it’s worth doing on this older truck.

The amount of professionals I’ve seen say ‘that’s dangerous’.. I’m a builder and I always support people doing work theirself, like building a wall, it might not be right but it’s good to see someone trying.. diy is mostly the right decision, just do it yourself and learn, then you have the skills for the future

After seeing Zach's progress as a beginner PDR, I find his work is really decent (just requires more learning and practise). I DIY unless the damage is severe - because you will always have people out there making these dents and dings and honestly, having the skills to fix most if not all of them is a skill that saves you money and is something worth learning.

I had a shopping cart roll across a parking lot right into my rear passenger door, left a dent in the trickiest place on the door to fix, a low crease. Took it for paintless dent repair less than a week after it happened. Took them a few hours, but I couldn’t possibly be happier, even in such a tricky spot it’s so completely gone, and my paint is undamaged. It was such a complex job they had to take off my door, drill a hole in the bottom to get the tools in, then of course plug the hole and reattach my door. They did seal their hole with a factory seal and even sprayed it with some kind of waterproof sealant. Cost $200 and honestly I think they gave me a fantastic deal for that. Also got 2 small door dings pulled from a different door, cost $75. But my car looks pristine. No way on earth I could have done a mildly comparable job. I hate spending money, but going to a pro is worth it! They even pointed out a spot on my hood just glancing at the car that apparently had pdr done before, but not as good as their work. Just looks kinda orange peel-y.
