$450 brake upgrade kit vs. a $4400 big brake kit. Does more expensive mean more better? And is it worth it?
Donut bought two identical 350z’s and we have been modifying them to be fun, daily drivers that you can take to the track.
James Pumphrey and Zach Jobe are on Team Hi, and their Z gets the expensive parts. Nolan Sykes and Aaron Parker are on Team Low, and their 350z gets the cheap parts. Afterwards, the teams test them to see which components are actually worth spending the money on.
So far, we’ve installed coilovers and new wheel and tire combos on the 350Zs, and now we’re moving on to brakes. The ability to stop well is probably one of the more underrated features of a car. But if you’re planning some serious go-fast mods, like the turbo kits coming soon, or you want to turn yourself into a track rat, braking should be a priority. It’s just plain safer. And if you’re looking for the fastest possible laps, being able to brake harder and later means you’ll be shaving off time. So we want to see what kind of results we can get from a really basic brake upgrade versus a full super expensive brake kit.
This time, Nolan and Aaron are getting a lot less total stuff for their money. Their $450 basic brake upgrade kit just comes with drilled and slotted rotors, braided stainless steel brake lines, Centric Posi Quiet brake pads for the street, and some Motul brake fluid. Low Car is keeping its stock sliding calipers, which aren’t quite as confidence-inspiring as opposed-piston calipers. Their design makes them flex more, so the pedal might not feel as good as James’ will after his brake upgrade.
Hi Team is getting a full-on, 4-wheel upgrade with Wilwood 6-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear calipers, bigger 13-inch front rotors, pads, and braided stainless lines to the tune of $4400.
Is more expensive more better? Watch to find out.

if you really want to setup your car for a race track dont waste your money on wilwood.. get an ap racing, brembo or alcon instead.. my experienced with 6 pot wilwood on my turbo e92 m3 not so great.. the heat dissipation is worse, for my driving style on track i often get a fade and boiling fluid if braking too hard no matter what type of pad it was on.. the warranty also not so great, they refused to replace my crack rotor disc because they said the brake i purchased is not for track use.. its a 6pot, ofcourse we will race with it.. now after using ap racing radical 2 combine with their j hook rotor disc, its really a night and day difference,.

That English school needs to teach you all to say learned not leant. Although grammatically correct and accepted out of native English speaking countries, it just doesn't make sense. It is spelled like a contraction but isn't one. It's not learn not - it is learned. I hope you succeed well, English is such a common language so most native English speaking countries don't have a need to speak another language. As a result most of us aren't multilingual like you will be.

I love this series. I’m totally the low guy lol I love bang for buck. You guys should really use your objective results to illustrate the comparison in a percentage. For example the Wilwood brake kit cost 1000% more but only offered a 10% performance improvement (shown in 60-0 tests). There are other attributes like subjective opinions that will influence buying decisions but the % comparison is important.

It's brilliant that you guys are doing this (i'm and engineer / ok mechanic) A friend fitted dinner plate sized brembos on his car. They are amazing. However on another friends similar car with normal road use you cannot feel the difference. However under heavy track use the cheaper ones needed cool down time and the other car stayed out on track the whole session. It's all very interesting. Lets face it most people won't be hitting the track so the racing spec is overkill. But it's really nice to know that brake upgrades are one of the best things you can do to your car. (just not great for the person braking behind you) Great show, proving what we have been trying to tell people for years. However if you want to go balls to the wall amazing everything carry on. It's only money and if you love the look, express yourself with what you feel looks the best right? Break difference is all on your budget and ability. I had a ZX2 done right..kinda used 94EGT rear disk with Ebay rotors and stock Calipers...vs. Wildwood fronts and stock rears. Mine stopped harder and way faster. Some adjustments were made for rear to work proper....lol

The part of the video that surprised me was the FIRE. I've never seen that on a street car and would freak out if that happened to me. Also I've had brake fade on a downhill drive. That's very scary to think your car would be stoping and it wouldn't. Luckily nothing happened to me or the passenger.
@specialopsdave
@specialopsdave 4 жыл бұрын
If you're getting fade on hills, you should really begin using engine braking. Fade should only be an issue in passenger cars when you perform multiple successive panic stops. Here's a video on how to engine brake: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZKypX5si9qnjbM

I've got Benbo's on my 928 S4 and they are incredible. The amount of control during heavy breaking really builds some unearned confidence. Smooth and very strong. You can really stand on them and you know when they're going to lock so you can let your foot off just the tiniest bit and stop in the shortest amount of time possible and if you have to break hard in a turn it's the same thing. I know if I have to stop I'm going to stop and without ABS brakes I find it much easier to control than any other car I've ever driven without ABS. The 928 is a big car. It's a heavy car. But I can really throw it around now, even in a tight parking lot.

I use some ATE performance Brake disks and brake pads. They do brake my car dependably from 124 mph to around 60 to 75 mph on German Autobahn. No fading. Its about how to brake. Most people stand on the brake pedal a while just getting to overheat brakes. Short and hard braking is better than long and soft braking.

Just my .02, if your vehicle is a track day car and not a race car, IMO it's not really worth it to get a big brake kit. Most of the increase in performance is in the pad material and rotor design. Also, flushing out your DOT-3 brake system with DOT-4 fluid and replacing the rubber end lines with braided stainless gets rid of most of the fade associated with rubber lines balooning. Will the big brake kit be better than a brake upgrade it? Of course. More contact surface area = more available friction for a given coefficient of friction. IMPORTANT DISTICTION: the big brake kit seen in this video is a FLOATING ROTOR setup, which is arguably much better than a standard rotor because the rotor doesn't dissipate heat into the hub as quickly. Heat in the hub leads to premature wear on you hub/spindle bearings. Do you NEED the big brake kit? Unless your car weighs more than 3500 lbs and has to brake after continuous high-speed sections, probably not. Getting a pad with a better coefficient of friction and a rotor with better heat dissipation capabilities will help you out much more than you think. Last caveat: I've ran into issues with cross-drilled rotors cracking before, which is why I go for slotted rotors exclusively now. You can do whatever you desire; just thought I'd throw that little tidbit out here in case someone was wondering. Edit: I say this because although big brake kits are better performers, it's worthwhile to be cost-conscious when setting up a vehicle for the track. Less money spent on a brake system leaves more money for more trackdays. source: results of modification on my own IS250 (not a 'fast' car, but a fun car to drive fast.)

Frankly, for Low Car, what's missing on this one is two things for my mind. 1] Remanufactured; there's plenty of 2-pot replacement calipers for under $200 2] Sourcing a caliper upgrade (ie 2-pot) from another vehicle with the same bolt up/disc diameter clearance dimensions. Whilst not springing for new gear I get, but don't ignore wrecker opportunities (which is exactly where such budgetly constrained punters as Low Car go).
