The FIRST 2020 MKV Supra to make 1000HP on the BMW B58 engine, brought to you by legendary Formula Drift and Import Drag Racing builder Stephan Papadakis. Steph has built cars for the likes of Fredric Aasbo and Tanner Foust, utilizing the Scion TC, Toyota 86 / FR-S, and other platforms. He even threw a NASCAR engine in a Scion TC! But today, instead of using a 2JZ from the MKIV Supra or a Chevy LS engine, he stuck with the stock BMW B58, threw a big BorgWarner turbo on it, and with the help of some forged internals and 3D PRINTED ALUMINUM ( YOU CAN 3D PRINT METAL! ), he managed to put out 1000HP!

I've always wondered this if you get a 3d printed part of any kind and any material is it or can you make it stronger than forged? Someone please tell me
@hypex6881
@hypex6881 3 жыл бұрын
@@holden2260(I am a german dude in mechanical engeneering so pls excuse my butchering of the english language) As far as I know the grain/material structure of what most people see as 3D printed parts (SLM = selective laser melting) is similar to welds which are almost always rather brittle but generally quite strong. Now lets get to the fun part! First lets talk a bit more about forged parts. The video explains the basics but as far as I can tell makes a few mistakes. As the material compresses and gets formed it also creates more tenslie strength by making it harder for the particles to move ( German "Kaltverfestigung" = "work hardening" - I hope thats correct ) and furthermore allows for better material strength in situations where there is a lot of oscillation/vibrations (like in a car or train). In summary Forging is great but really hard to get right and it holds a high expense up front (for the cast). Forged parts can again be made of many really stong materials Now 3D printed parts (especially with SLM = selective laser melting) are a very intresting topic and I dont claim to be an expert in this field but I am gonna try to do my best. How does it work: you have small metal granules that you melt with a laser and you do this for multiple layers Hoe does it compare to Forging ? : Well this depends hugely on the material you use. Keep in mind that the better the material the higher the cost (usually) but I think that for applications where there is not that much vibrations/osciallations they could compare. But generally forged parts are stronger especially in the already mentioned applications like trains maybe even planes etc. Where do 3D printed parts find apllication/are far superior - if you need the incredible funtionality, shapes etc. As you know there is a lot of really cool stuff. Now thats about it but if you really wanna see cool stuff where 3D printing with metals is applied on a really high level check out Nasa or SpaceX they create awesome stuff Maybe I was able to answer your question but generally it makes me happy that people like you are intrested in things like this nowadays- gives me some hope that humanity has a chance 🤣

So the biggest thing I learned about this BMW/Toyota project is that while BMW seems to develop cutting-edge engine technology, Toyota seems to be FAR more focused on longevity and engineering of every single piece (be it a nut, bolt, etc) that goes into the project. I think I even recall reading BMW saying how impressive it was that Toyota was evaluating each fastener. A stark contrast to how they spent development money. And I think that's really what separates the Supra from the... shit. I can't remember. Whatever the BMW car is that has more power. The Supra was more subdued, for sure. But it's definitely over-engineered. It's almost (tinfoil hat time) like they engineered a ton of overheard into this engine to make it specifically awesome to tuners. Doug DeMuro even theorized this back when the Supra was new, thanks to its many useless fake vents. But I think he was right. Toyota wanted to make another car worthy of tuners, and they did exactly that IMO. They wanted people to forget the MKIV and the 2JZ. Well, that's never going to happen, but this engine just might convert some people. The irony is that the "car guy" crowd who worships the 2JZ will never accept this, but the reality is that this engine probably is as good, if not better, because Toyota designed it to be exactly that. And don't get me wrong, I'm a car guy who LOVES the 2JZ, but I think Papadakis has proven that this is just a new generation of a great engine. BMW or not.

Well, that's what Akio and Tada wanted to do with the Mk5. They wanted to make the car more tuning friendly so car enthusiasts can upgrade their Mk5s whatever they want in terms of performance (I congratulate Stephen with his time, effort and research to tune the B58 up to 1000HP) and body-kits (Damn there's a lot of nice body-kit designs of the MK5 at SEMA. I personally like the Heritage Edition and 3000GT Concept). Also with your last sentence, in my opinion all Supras are real Supras. All I can say is each Supras are special in different ways. @@seirv0621 I think the biggest issue is that the Toyota engines were made in the 90s. Even though they lasted to the current times through intense modding but the 2JZ is in all terms outdated now days. I don't think engines this simple and soo over engineered stand nowdays. I mean stock for stock MK.V is soo much better. Whilst not as durable the B58 is still but the high power builds already start appearing. Imagine when few years down the line people come up with new ways to mod them. Also whilst being a non Toyota engine in a legacy Toyota is odd. Technically a wider platform means more people mod them so it could run modding prices down to pretty affordable prices something that the 2J isn't. And without BMW help, the new Supra just wouldnt exist there is no reason for Toyota to make a pretty niche car like the supra so be happy, as a Mitsubishi fan trust me they could have made the new Supra in a million worse ways

I’m happy this guy letting his own character develop instead of forcing in jokes like previously. Starting to make better content then Nolan 👀

I think the Supra is a great car and all the people who think that’s it’s not because it doesn’t have a 2JZ are wack.

The new motor is fine. I'm irritated about all the fake vents, especially the ones glued to the door. It has one functional vent- the center grille vent. WTH Toyota?

I guess thats why they hate the mk3 supra too. "It's not a real supra" is what I see often regarding the mk3 because it has the 1jz. Its pretty comfortable and decently fast, headgasket issues nonwithstanding...

JJJ mk3 is before the 2j so calling it not a Supra is too far but the a90 yeah it could could be fast and everything but it just not like a Supra yeah it could be more efficient and blah blah blah but mk4 will always be the most loved Supra
