ONE MILLION SUBSCRIBERS! Thank You SO MUCH for supporting us, from everyone at Donut! It means everything to us, we couldn’t do what we do without you!
Carroll Shelby is responsible for some of the most legendary race cars in the world: The Cobra, The Daytona Coupe, The GT350, just to name few. But before he built cars, he was driving; and before that, he was just a kid from the middle of nowhere. How did a boy named Carroll become an Icon? Join James as he explores the incredible (and inspiring) story of Carroll Shelby.
Up to Speed is a weekly automotive history show about the best cars, brands, designers, drivers and influencers ever. Host James Pumphrey covers everything from the Toyota Supra to the Chevy El Camino, The VW GTI to the Subaru WRX. The origins of every car will be uncovered to get you Up to Speed..
Some of our best videos ever are coming out soon, stay tuned so you won't miss a thing!

Shannoy Daley 1) punctuation is your friend. It helps readers discern what you’re trying to say. 2) he got emotional for two reasons, he really admires Carroll Shelby, and because Donut is taking off. He’s the Editor In Chief, for all intents and purpose, it’s his baby. He’s proud of his teams success.

Its been a long time since this video came out in KZbin time. I only recently really got into the channel and I have managed to binge, I think, every single video. I cant find any other visible videos anyhow. So thank you for being super awesome and I am really happy to get to be here and enjoy the content you all make.

Jesus, I'm almost 4 years late to see this one & James has always been my #1 Donut bro' but he's just elevated himself even more in my estimation, following this unashamed sob of his at the end...respect to you from 'Down Under', bud...& we're all so very fortunate to still have you here, following what you've since endured...Matt.

Dude, you can tell Pumphrey has worked hard for this. I don't know whether or not he was the one who put the Donut team together, but Donut started out really small and you can tell that he's put all of his blood, sweat, and tears into the company. I think his crying is for real.

I've been on KZbin since the very beginning and I gotta say, James and his team are the most deserving of praise for the quality of work and quirky brand of humour they put out week after week. It's just amazing how fast they churn out these caliber of videos. I never thought there'd be a show that could step toe to toe with UK's TopGear and yet here you are. Don't forget us little folk Donut when you guys hit an easy 5 million. Dammit dude...got me tearing up and shit...

I have grown up around Fords my whole life… Mustangs have been one of my favorite platforms for my entire life. I knew Carol, and my step-brother worked with him at the dealership in Vegas for a number of years. He often had lunch with him and they were close during the later years of Shelby’s life. I think that there’s newsreel interviews out there of my brother Manny crying while speaking about Carol after he passed out there somewhere… He was an amazing guy, and it’s a shame that he is gone… maybe not entirely surprising with the fact that he had a heart condition since early childhood, loved steakhouse lunches several times a week, and smoked like a chimney… LoL, but he had an amazing career full of once-in-a-lifetime experiences & achievements… He was absolutely adored, and he will be missed by those who knew him, as well as by millions who knew of him for his legacy… That’s the best that any of us can hope for, and he earned the fact that he will always be remembered as a good man.

My grandpa was a lifer in the military and retired as a Master Sergeant and helicopter mechanic. His first car was a 1968 Mustang Boss 302. He sold it when he enlisted and went to 'Nam where he was a door gunner and when he made it back he tracked his car down and bought it back for what he sold it for. He still has it in his garage. He has owned nothing but Fords since. In 2010 he bought that brand new redesigned Shelby Cobra he had been saving for years for. He was retired so he likes to tinker and decided he wanted to put a different intake on it and some other minor things. This required that the Cobra emblem be moved to the other side of the front grill. He refused to do it without permission because he held Carroll Shelby in such high esteem. He sent a letter addressed to Shelby shortly after he bought the car and he actually got one back, signed by Shelby, stating that it was okay for him to move the emblem for modification purposes and that the car could still be considered a real Cobra Mustang. Obviously as we now know Shelby died not that long after. The letter is framed and hung in a glass case on the wall of his garage and him showing it to me is one of the only times I've ever seen him cry. I'm not really a "my car is better because it's a Chevy/Ford" type of guy but it's plain to see how important Ford and the Shelby name are to some people. This guy was and still is a large part of American car culture and I doubt that will ever die. If there ever was a car that screams "FUCK YEAH AMERICA" it's the goddamned Mustang and the Cobra emblem on the front.
