Guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter was a founding member of Steely Dan until they stopped touring and he joined The Doobies. He's also been a defense consultant and advisor to the U.S. members of Congress on Missile defense. Baxter was the one who suggested that Michael McDonald sit in for the ill Tom Johnston, and was asked to join Steely full time. McDonald would end up joining The Doobies in '75. As a studio musician, Skunk has played with and for the best.

Scrolling through the comments, and as always there are the same old politics of the Old Doobies versus the New (McDonald) Doobies. The fact is that there were essentially 2 different sounds, the older group more of a laid back, country-type rock, and the newer sound with Michael bringing in the soul. Prefer whoever you want, I'm just tired of hearing who is better, or that MM "ruined" the group, gimme a break!
