Here's my pitch for a Doom movie: don't center the action on the Doom marine/Doom Slayer, but have him be in the film. Instead, have the main focus be a small group of scientists and soldiers trying to get through the chaos and violence alive as things get progressively worse and their numbers dwindle. At the same time, make it clear that the Doomslayerguy is doing his thing. Have him be just a force of nature crashing through the entire facility, wrecking demon shit, and occasionally intersecting with the main characters. The first time could be relatively innocuous, the second chaotic to the point they don't know which of the many entities present is the center of the storm, and then by the third encounter/sighting (even just quick glances or glimpses in the background of scenes that the characters don't notice but the audience does) will establish the Doomslayerguy as the unstoppable righteous badass he is. He'd get character development in small moments, things like slamming doors shut/sealing them behind him so that survivors like the main characters can't accidentally follow him into the thickest combat zones; or during a scene where he's in the same room as our survivors he can notice that they're not properly armed to adequately defend themselves against the oncoming demonic hordes, so he'll casually toss them his weapon as he moves towards his next target cracking his knuckles - maybe with a surge of red energy through his suit like he's activating Berserk. And of course the finale would have him swoop in and save (what's left of) the day in classic one-many-army style ultra-violence, allowing the last main character(s) to escape, only to turn around and dive straight back into it ("it" in this case being literal Hell, because that's where the climax would obviously take place) without hesitation, rest, or recognition. I think this approach would solve the two biggest problems with a Doom movie: characterizing Doomguy and trying to balance his power fantasy in-game persona with the necessary vulnerability characters need to maintain tension. The audience would be there to see Doomguy curbstomp demon ass, and they'd get it, but they'd also get characters that are more than just names given to future corpses. The plot would be simple, but simple doesn't mean bad: good characters and good action can make the simplest plot magic, ala Mad Max Fury Road.
@iennefaLsh4 жыл бұрын
Intriguing idea. I'd love to see Doomguy as a side character that occasionally comes to help the main protagonists.
@LdNidd4 жыл бұрын
@@iennefaLsh I think the key to making it work would be ensuring that he didn't feel like a deus ex machina that just showed up when the main crew encountered anything serious. They'd need to fight and suffer and die on their own, and the Doom Slayer would have to be shown as independent of them, but not unwilling to help when he does notice. One way to add to that feel would be to have glimpses of the Slayer in the backgound, or maybe briefly seen as a door closes or on a floor that passes as the crew goes up an elevator, or even just the sounds of demons getting slaughtered a couple rooms over in the background after catching a glimpse of him to confirm he's still nearby. Then those things could be capitalized on so that the Slayer could encounter the protagonists, but in a way that would make sense for him, like crashing through a wall fighting a demon, or blasting his way inside the base after a battle on the surface of Mars, etc. I genuinely think it could work. But I don't know that anyone in Hollywood would ever agree to that kind of a script, where the "main" character is in less than 1/4th of the film on screen.

I think a Doom movie could work if the main characters were someone OTHER than Doom Guy. He's there, but he's like a force of nature. The characters are essentially trying to help him get at the demons. Like maybe he's fighting a room of demons but doesn't have his weapons, but because he's outnumbered and weaponless, he can't break away easily. So they have to arm him. Or maybe they have to go get the BFG for him near the climax. Or open doors for him, find keys, etc. Maybe they are the ones who need to uncover the mystery and discover where the party has to go next in order to close the Hellgate, even though Doom Guy is the only one who really stands a chance against the demons. Hell, we could have some tense stealth sections where the main characters need to sneak around a few demons in order to access a computer, or restore power to an airlock, or something. They could even kill a few here and there. Bonus points if you make THEM look relatively badass just by using their brains, technology, and teamwork to take down a cacodemon that was hunting them down. Then a bit later on, have Doom Guy just jump right on top of one and start ripping and tearing.

>love for the source material I don't really think having one of the MAIN cast insult the source material would be considered "a love for the source material". This really feels just like any PS2 survival horror game that was brought to the big screen, not like Doom. It's easy to throw in video game references like BJ's name and other things, but they really feel like nothing more than cheap jabs or inclusions trying to invoke a "hey, I know that!" from the audience who might be watching. Even with a low budget, they could have handled the movie a lot better, and actually tried to make it feel like, well, Doom. OR, at the very least this could have been chalked up to a side story, instead of having 'Doom' as the main title, something like: Hell's Reckoning, or something schlocky like that, since that fits that sequel bait ending better than just straight up calling it 'Doom'.
@kabeltelevizio5 жыл бұрын
For a low budget movie, the set design was quite alright and the locations did feel like Doom locations. Unfortunately everything else was missing, it needed more blood and gore and demons. I think they did try their best to create a Doom movie, but the budget was a big factor here and there are too many technical faults in the movie to make enjoyable. I think they realized that with the budget they had, they would never be able to create an original, well acted, well directed gorefest, so just went with copying Alien and throwing in a bunch of references. All in all, Doom is not a good source material for a movie, it's too gamey, since its achievement lies in the amazing combat and not in the almost non-existent story.

"This is probably the best we're gonna get with a doom adaptation..." True, but if that's the case, and if they clearly know this isn't going to win any favor with the fans either, nor is it going to earn any money due to how little they pumped into the production, why even attempt this? Remember, this isn't a small scale fan video, this was made to be an official adaptation of a property now owned by Bethesda and ID. Surely they'd have the foresight to see this would just be a waste of time and money, right?

When you create a movie with annihilation in title, you know that annihilation is what it will do to the video game(MK).

Excellent video & review, couldn't agree more with Gggmanboss! So sad that one cannot recognize that this is actually a Doom movie because there are few associations to the game series. I doubt that the production crew have even played the damn games ever :) I liked the Scottish lass though; she is so cute with here big eyes and accent ^ __ ^

@@weeboranger4988 i saw a doom moive and i was curious. Then i heard bertruger's name and i was even more interested because of the potential of a story like Doom 3 had. it had a solid start, only to get bogged down in 90 minutes of pointless BS that ultimately went nowhere. I mean, the Karl Urban/Dwayne Johnson version was alright, because the marines were actually badass with some damn good action scenes and character development. unfortunately whoever wrote the story for this one just made a rushed movie and stuck a bunch of game related crap in like 'easter eggs', obviously, just leeching hard off the name of something they didn't understand.

Doomguy - Goes to hell and back, killing thousands of demons with his bare hands without a sweat. Doomgirl - Fights one imp and a evil scientist, spend 5 minutes in hell. Barely survives.

@@lionocyborg6030 They forget what it means to be the "doomslayer". It wouldn't matter if it was a man, a woman (hell, look at Sigourney: even at the alien audition she was badass), a dog, a cockroach. It's about the attitude, being pissed off, destroying everything in your path, to prevent everything else from being destroyed, ripping and tearing, blasting Romero behind that secret wall.

If I were to make a doom movie, Doom guy would: Have no lines beyond a grunt or screams Always have a helmet on. And would kill demons to the tune of heavy metal for exactly 66.6% of the movie.
