The reason I think that Doom3 runs so smooth even on a console, is the fact that it has one of the most organized code in history of videogames, along with quake 3. No spaghetti code means great ports.

I remember playing co-op Doom 3 on Xbox Live back in high school and it would drop in a random player to play with. One of the guys was up paired with ended up being one of my best friends on both Xbox Live and in real life, after we spend the better part of 12 hours essentially yuking it while shooting imps in the face. 15 years later, we're still tearing it up online and we both plan on playing the hell out of Doom Eternal, especially the Invasion mode!

It wasn't that the Xbox was strong... It's just that the PS2 was fucking weak. No seriously. The Gamecube was more capable than the PS2 and everyone at the time was memeing about that console. But the Sony fans were in massive denial about their console's capabilities. Something that continues through each Generation when Sony cuts corners. PS2 was my last console, actually. I played the DOOM 3 Xbox about 2-3 years ago and was quite surprised at how different it felt (in a good way.) It's great because even if you played the PC version a million times like I did, it is still worth playing the Xbox port since some of the levels have different layouts and enemy placment in some sections is modified. Playing the Xbox port was the first time in years that I actually felt on edge again playing DOOM 3. Definitely recommended to people who haven't played it yet!

DUDE! I only experienced Doom 3 by watching my brother play it on the original Xbox. I talked about that part with the disappearing chainsaw demon at school so much! I had no idea that was exclusive to the Xbox version- that added so much to the introduction of that enemy. It was also the closest thing I'd seen to a scary moment in a video game, until Condemned: Criminal Origins managed to actually scare the shit out of me. Lol

Doom 3, for me, was always a different beast from the other Doom games. It reminded me of Doom for the PlayStation and on the N64. It really got me into horror games because it was a hybrid of those faster shooters and slower horror games. While I can't say it's the best, it will forever hold a place in my heart.

Imo, Doom 3 might actually be my favorite. I play it to this day and have played it more than any other Doom title. There's something about its horror atmosphere and theme that none of the other games have, and the combat and story keep me coming back and never make me bored. I see why people don't like it as much as the others, but I don't care, I like the other Dooms, but LOVE Doom 3.

doom 3 is really divisive. I have mad respect for that game even if its execution wasn't as great as other games. Just the technical aspect of it should make any cultured gamer bow their head. Yes, that is for the people that thought the first Killzone 2 trailer was a real thing.
@brandontadday6288
@brandontadday6288 2 жыл бұрын
It’s weird to me how divisive this game is. I actually feel like Doom 3 almost sticks closer to the feel of the original Doom than the 2016 reboot does (despite most people arguing the opposite). One thing I didn’t like about the 2016 reboot was the lack of claustrophobia-inducing environments. OG Doom and Doom 3 both have PLENTY of moments where your forced down narrow corridors and densely packed small arenas. I found the atmosphere of Doom 2016 was kinda nullled by just how big some of the arenas were which removed a lot of the tense and visceral combat that I associate with Doom as a franchise.

Same here, I grew up on Doom 3, remember watching my dad play it when I was little and it really spooked the hell out of me. When I was a older, I got around to playing it, and it still scared me, but was honestly really fun! I played the Original Doom, Doom 2, and Doom 2016, but Doom 3 will always have a special place in my heart, even if the Doom community considers it the Black sheep of the series, I can see its wonder and the fun it does, as well as trying new things. Plus Doom 3's DLC was really good! From the looks of it Eternal looks a bit more story in it, which for me is wonderful, I loved reading the little lore pieces you collect in the levels in Doom 2016 and Doom 3, so it will be a delight I'm sure!

Doom 3 had the best graphics of any Console game at its time. Keep in mind, this was a tremendous jump from Doom 1 and 2 in terms of graphics and presentation. I'm not sure the lighting is the main thing that Doom 3 needs improving - it still looks more impressive in that respect than a lot of modern games. The main things it needs are HD textures and higher-poly character models. (Also the standard modding adjustments: stop the corpses and debris from vanishing, beef up the enemy health, nerf the Soul Cube, remove the Zsec's aimpunch, add the Reznor sounds, remove that annoying click sound while running.)

I will say this until the day I die of either old age, a fast food-induced heart attack, falling off a balcony or a combination of the three, Doom 3's Xbox port is one of the best handled and most faithful PC-to-console ports of any first person shooter that has ever been released. Some-fucking-how, Vicarious Visions and Nerve Software (For the equally impressive Resurrection of Evil standalone port) managed to cram almost every nook, cranny and id Tech 4 jumpscare onto the Xbox, a system with hardware that was a generation below Doom 3's then-insane _minimum_ requirements, adjusting parts of the game as needed while maintaining the overall tone, feel and sense of urgency the original had, along with controls that don't suck, considering it's a _console_ port. I tip my hat to you both, Vicarious Visions and Nerve Software, both for this port of the original Doom 3, and giving the Pistol a taclight in RoE.

I didn't think much of Doom 3 when it came out, despite being hyped for it. The competition was tough with the original Far Cry and HL2 coming out around the same time. I found myself far preferring the others, especially Far Cry, as it wasn't so claustrophobic and dark. But I got Doom 3 again a couple of years back and I played it through then immediately played it through again. Years later I finally got what they went for here and it was a brilliant game imo

@@chrisrichfield8906 yeah, though I did personally really love the lighting in Doom 3. But the wide open tropical maps on Far Cry were just a much nicer place to be immersed in. I used to love hiding in a room in one of the multiplayer maps where you could turn off the lights and chase someone with the chainsaw when they came in until they ran into the teleporter to get telefragged. Also always thought it was cool that the first two Doom games had exclusive levels to the port.

I told him to come to my house and didn't tell him I had just gotten Doom 3 on Xbox. He was so happy when I turned the Xbox on and doom 3 music started to play. We played all the way to hell nonstop. It was one of my best gaming moments in my life. This game shows how you target the PC and then have a seperate studio do the console port! That is how you do it and it makes games amazing because an entire studio can optimize the game for console. Same thing was done for Half Life 2 original Xbox port. PS2 could never run those games.

Here's why Doom 3 on Xbox doesn't have checkpoints: it turns out there was a bug in the checkpoint system that Vicarious Visions couldn't fix prior to shipping the game in 2005. It was actually crashing the game! I remember reading about it in an old issue of Game Developer magazine. The workaround was the next best thing, a Quick Save method that is not mentioned in the video (bound to the black or white buttons). So yeah, no checkpoints BUT there is an easily accessible shortcut to quick save.

The gap between the PS2/GameCube and Xbox was massive. The other consoles couldn't even run Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. When the Xbox released, it had the world's most powerful GPU -- more powerful than the then-new GeForce 3 -- in the hybrid NV2a (which, it turned out, combined elements of NV20, NV25 and NV30), which had its closest cousin in the GeForce 4 which released in 2002. Elements of it weren't equaled in a desktop card until 2003. It was a programmable shader GPU/console, unlike the PS2 and GameCube. As far as lights, this made it an easy 'yes' for Doom 3. The Xbox also had a SIMD Pentium 3. As far as architecture, the OG Xbox was very much on-target for Doom 3. It's really the OG Xbox that created the modern console, and predicted the conflation of Consoles with PC gaming. Conflating the Xbox's prowess and overall tech with the PS2 is a great misread of what the two devices were, and of modern gaming history. Arguably, the gap between the PS2 and Xbox was the widest there's ever been between two mainline consoles in a single generation, particularly considering their overlapping price point.
