I played the DOOM 3 Xbox about 2-3 years ago and was quite surprised at how different it felt (in a good way.) It's great because even if you played the PC version a million times like I did, it is still worth playing the Xbox port since some of the levels have different layouts and enemy placment in some sections is modified. I see why people don't like it as much as the others, but I don't care, I like the other Dooms, but LOVE Doom 3.

doom 3 is really divisive. I have mad respect for that game even if its execution wasn't as great as other games. Just the technical aspect of it should make any cultured gamer bow their head. Yes, that is for the people that thought the first Killzone 2 trailer was a real thing.
@brandontadday62882 жыл бұрын
It’s weird to me how divisive this game is. I actually feel like Doom 3 almost sticks closer to the feel of the original Doom than the 2016 reboot does (despite most people arguing the opposite). One thing I didn’t like about the 2016 reboot was the lack of claustrophobia-inducing environments. OG Doom and Doom 3 both have PLENTY of moments where your forced down narrow corridors and densely packed small arenas. I found the atmosphere of Doom 2016 was kinda nullled by just how big some of the arenas were which removed a lot of the tense and visceral combat that I associate with Doom as a franchise.

I will say this until the day I die of either old age, a fast food-induced heart attack, falling off a balcony or a combination of the three, Doom 3's Xbox port is one of the best handled and most faithful PC-to-console ports of any first person shooter that has ever been released. Some-fucking-how, Vicarious Visions and Nerve Software (For the equally impressive Resurrection of Evil standalone port) managed to cram almost every nook, cranny and id Tech 4 jumpscare onto the Xbox, a system with hardware that was a generation below Doom 3's then-insane _minimum_ requirements, adjusting parts of the game as needed while maintaining the overall tone, feel and sense of urgency the original had, along with controls that don't suck, considering it's a _console_ port. I tip my hat to you both, Vicarious Visions and Nerve Software, both for this port of the original Doom 3, and giving the Pistol a taclight in RoE.

I told him to come to my house and didn't tell him I had just gotten Doom 3 on Xbox. He was so happy when I turned the Xbox on and doom 3 music started to play. We played all the way to hell nonstop. It was one of my best gaming moments in my life. This game shows how you target the PC and then have a seperate studio do the console port! That is how you do it and it makes games amazing because an entire studio can optimize the game for console. Same thing was done for Half Life 2 original Xbox port. PS2 could never run those games.
@lorien424 жыл бұрын
The PS2 port of the original Half-Life is surprisingly decent outside of the interminable loading screens, but yes I doubt the PS2 could've handled the HL2 port. IT was pretty good on Xbox, I will have to go to an Exchange and rebuy it as I got rid of it when I got the Orange Box years back...

One of my favorite multiplayer moments was in this game. My brother and I LAN linked two xboxes and 1v1'ed, and he was chasing me - so I dipped into a room, turned the lights off, then whipped out my chainsaw while sitting in a corner. He runs into the room and immediately stops on the threshold of darkness as he hears the saw revving, and just jumps back and starts chucking nades as I leapt out of the shadows and sawed him down. His high pitched screams are a good memory.

Took the words right out of my mouth. It made the game way too easy and I basically would just play a minigame of how fast can i turn the light back on. Totally r e m o v i n g any type of horror aspect and turning it into just a straight up action game which would be more "doom 1-2-ish" but also defeating John Carmacks original vision for the game in the first place. But it broadened the horizons for the casuals :) . New insult to coin, "Shoulder Mounter", or you could also use "Fucking Shoulder Mounter"

Here's why Doom 3 on Xbox doesn't have checkpoints: it turns out there was a bug in the checkpoint system that Vicarious Visions couldn't fix prior to shipping the game in 2005. It was actually crashing the game! I remember reading about it in an old issue of Game Developer magazine. The workaround was the next best thing, a Quick Save method that is not mentioned in the video (bound to the black or white buttons). So yeah, no checkpoints BUT there is an easily accessible shortcut to quick save.

I'm going to have to revisit this version soon. I remember really enjoying it when it came out (PC wasn't powerful enough to handle the game at the time). I revisited the PC version last year and did two full playthroughs, and holy crap does it overstay its welcome. Cutting out a lot of the bloat in the Xbox version, even if simply due to limitations, can only be a good thing.

The gap between the PS2/GameCube and Xbox was massive. The other consoles couldn't even run Half-Life 2 or Doom 3. When the Xbox released, it had the world's most powerful GPU -- more powerful than the then-new GeForce 3 -- in the hybrid NV2a (which, it turned out, combined elements of NV20, NV25 and NV30), which had its closest cousin in the GeForce 4 which released in 2002. Elements of it weren't equaled in a desktop card until 2003. It was a programmable shader GPU/console, unlike the PS2 and GameCube. As far as lights, this made it an easy 'yes' for Doom 3. The Xbox also had a SIMD Pentium 3. As far as architecture, the OG Xbox was very much on-target for Doom 3. It's really the OG Xbox that created the modern console, and predicted the conflation of Consoles with PC gaming. Conflating the Xbox's prowess and overall tech with the PS2 is a great misread of what the two devices were, and of modern gaming history. Arguably, the gap between the PS2 and Xbox was the widest there's ever been between two mainline consoles in a single generation, particularly considering their overlapping price point.

That's one of the things I preferred about the BFG Edition. The BFG Edition kept almost all of the pitch black areas, but just bumped the lighting intensity(you could do that in OG DOOM3, but it seemed more balanced in BFG). It never made since to me in the original why the UAC was using 10watt bulbs.
