If I had to guess without looking at it in UDB, the exit door is too close to a floor linedef, so the floor linedef is "eating" the Use action. In Boom there's a linedef flag (PassThru) that prevents this from happening.

I'm shocked at how good the recreation of E2M7 is. I wonder how much of it was really based on memory alone. I also think the E2M2 recreation is pretty cool. I'd say that E2M2 is one of my favorite maps in the original Doom, and I like what the map maker did with it here. It takes many elements of the map, like the crushers, the central hub area, and the crate room, and remixes them into something completely new.
@ArDeThSuNjEkOl
@ArDeThSuNjEkOl 2 жыл бұрын
E2M1 was recreated pretty well but I was surprised at how shockingly faithful E2M7 was replicated, even the item layout is mostly there. Not perfect but damned good for out of memory. And I can't give the author, who had to E2M2, a hard time bc that's honestly an unenviable task. All-in-all, I think this effectively demonstrates why certain levels are made the way they are and how an unplanned approach can lead to... unfavorable results.

I think it's fairly telling how close episode 1 was that it's the best known episode to pretty much all Doom players. The later maps aren't just more complex, they are also just less played overall. In a way, that makes them much closer to the spirit of the endeavor, we see those parts of the maps that were memorable while other, in some cases significant, chunks of the map just don't even exist.

I kind of like the final fight being more cramped. Makes the situation feel a bit more desperate with such a huge enemy right on top of you. Also, I like this demonstration of just how much the average player appreciates a game's generosity towards them. As in not at all! How often do you consider the one of hundreds of ammo/health/whatever pickups in an average game? Apparently not a lot.

this happens a lot in art and architecture of all kinds. we have a tendency to shrink spaces or extra room because our brains recognize patterns and eliminate what we think isn't "important." inversely, rooms that are very memorable as setpieces in these maps tend to be bigger than they should be in art, the same principle is the reason why people who haven't learned how to draw what they see always draw figures with faces too big, foreheads and ears too small, limbs and bodies out of proportion, etc. breaking the pattern recognition parts of your brain of those habits is a key part of learning to draw

I mean to be fair ID eventually did make doom exactly how Tom Hall wanted it... it's called doom 3 and people don't like it much. I'm thinking that this episode was balanced, if it was balanced at all, with continuous play in mind. You don't feel the ammo (and armor) drought nearly as much with carryover gear. why is this kinda more interesting to watch than the amazing (micro)slaughter maps and other cool custom maps?? Maybe it's just refreshing to see doom in a more subtle gameplay

Deimos anomaly was one of those first Doom maps I ever saw in life and remember since I was a baby (yup, not even kid). And Containment area was one of my all-time favorites, so it is somewhat painful to see it like that. I've also seen an improved version of it run under some mod from Brutal family on KZbin. Can't recall, who played it. Either Martinoz or Kills Alone.

Funny how Fortress of Mystery, one of the more fun maps of episode, drops in gameplay quality where Halls of the Damned, which can be quite tedious, feels more fun. All those enemies at the fake exit certainly help.

That blue fake exit at M2E6 was a real murder hole. Glad you could cheese it. Otherwise, instant death without an invulnerability.

One thing that I noticed is there everyone remembers way more enemies in the episodes than there is in the originals. I wonder if thats due to the sensation of the difficulty being higher than it actually is (like when you tell your friends how tough doom is)!

i think a lot of people don’t normally play pistol start so the weapon placement isn’t as ingrained in their memory. they are used to already having the rocket launcher and a few rockets!

decino's levels of confusion: -> decino says loud and clear "what?"; -> decino helplessly mumbles "why this, why that?"; -> decino helplessly mumbles "why this, why that?" and ineptly chainsaws imps in the process.

25:07; "Some ammo be nice." Has 155 bullets. Also that fleshy lift is how you exit that room with the Cacodemons and Barons. Finally the first secret was originally triggered by raping, erm humping, the thing in the corner, so that skull on the pedestal.
