@doomerrasa84753 жыл бұрын
@Dremora This is entirely my conjecture because clearly some of the actions made don't make sense if it's just "from memory" Like, literally no one "remembers" there being a cyberdemon in e1m7, not a single soul. Same for cacos and lost souls. Similarly, even basic sanity checks would have revealed the unopenable door in e2m4 and the fundamental lack of ammo in a few levels in episode 2. So I percieve this as as a project that started "from memory" but devolved to "let's just make cursed doom 1 lmao" But yeah to clarify "scuffed and weird" is entirely my theory that I pulled out of my ass.

Too many details seem to be correct, as if they just messed with some vertexes and made some rooms bigger or they painstakingly played that map for days to remake it the day after. It's fun in one way but I also get kind of annoyed watching this. I did enjoy the E1M7 map, that felt legit messed up as the maker simply ran out of 'memory' and added IDK and wrong monsters etc. funny shit! Maybe all the dissatisfied people can band together and make an alternate version of this project, "Doom 1 the way smart people remember it". While I vigorously disagree with this, and find E3 better than E2 on avarage, there is no denying that, well, E1 is almost enteirly Romero, while E2 and E3 are pure Sandy and it shows. DOOM2 has somewhat similar problem, as it frontloads you with American McGee, and than it's back to Sandy, with ocasional Romero put in for good mesure. Now don't get me wrong, Sandy did make some good maps, but he also made all the really shitty ones too. The problem is, most of his maps are built around a gimmick. If said gimmick is good, you get fun maps like MAP08 or MAP23. if it is bad, you get E3M5. If it really, really sucks you get MAP24...
@lordbiscuitthetossable53522 жыл бұрын
@@mancubwwa I think the issue is not necessarily that Sandy is a bad mapper; personally, I think his highlights are really memorable, just the guy had done so many maps on a tight deadline that he couldn't spend much time refining them. Given that he apparently got much of his experience from DnD, it made sense that some of his maps (particularly tricks and traps) played out interestingly. Just the guy did so much that it was a wonder that he produced as many decent maps as he did, and I mean that respectfully; the guy is an absolute legend for putting out that many maps. In particular, most E2 maps were meant to be E3 maps, which is why Inferno felt like a step down in difficulty. Really shows how choppy those games were in practice. But yeah, there's probably a big reason why I tend to mainly play the first 16 or so maps of any given megawad. XD

On the subject of the scale being off. Tomb Raider Anniversary has a developer commentary and on it I remember them talking about how they play tested the game with people who had played the original and one problem they kept encountering is that people remembered things as different sizes then they actually were. The example they gave were the waterfall in Lost Valley (the third level) and the T-rex in the same level. People consistently remembered them being much larger then they really were in the old game. Don't know if that's what's happening with the scale of these levels but I thought it was kinda neat.

I find DOOM 1 Episode 1 to be consistently great. Episode 2 is less constant but has its highs in the form of Deimos Anomaly, Containment Area, Deimos Lab and Halls of the Damned. Episode 3 is consistently... not good, with it having no stand out maps and containing my 2 least favourite maps, Unholy Cathedral and Limbo. Episode 4 is pretty good on average but doesn't have the highs of Episode 1 or 2. DOOM 2 is consistently meh, with only two really great maps, Tricks and Traps and the Living End. As for its worse side, theres the boring Gantlet, Waste Tunnels and Factory, the overly ambitious Downtown, the absolute atrocity of Nirvana and a final boss somehow even more disappointing than the spider mastermind. Master Levels only has Paradox, Bloodsea Keep, Black Tower, and the Dr Sleep maps that can be called good. The rest are okay at best and mind-numbing at worse. TNT is my favourite Megawad despite its uneven quality. It has some of DOOM's best like Wormhole, Prison, Pharaoh as well as underrated gems like Metal, Steel Works, Deepest Reaches, Shipping/Respawning, Central Processing and the overly-hated Mount Pain. Still, Habitat and Baron's Den are awful and other maps make some odd choices and gimmicks. Plutonia is generally great, with Well of Souls, Impossible Mission and Bunker standing as the exceptions.

Some of these maps have textures and item placements way too accurate to than what they should be. It almost seems as if some creators, either had a reference while creating the maps or they only intentionally "screwed up" certain parts of the map to make the "from memory" stipulation plausible. Ive played each of these level at least 40 times and I can remember general layouts and secrets but textures and object placement i so much more of a minute detail. Yet I find in most of these levels, the textures, torch placements and such are like perfect but they "forget" 1 of the 2 only secrets in the map. Its just sketchy. That and the creative freedom they were given just ruins the spirit of the project. I think each creator should've been able to study the map beforehand but once the actual creating process began, they must only go off of memory.

I went back to watch your old records of the original, to really get the curse feeling. I for sure have to do it for Episode 4, since I barely remember the first map and that's it.

Another solid playthrough. Personally, the idea went pit the window on some maps, bit the very slaughtery ones seemed a lot more interesting than I remember them being as a kid. You seem to have a Doom-dependent eidetic memory; I swear you noticed that the wall texture was off in a specific room in one of the episode 2 maps, and you seem to pick up on every instance of the sky being visible where it shouldnt be. Personally, you could give me these maps, tell me they were the OG maps and I wouldn't have a bloody clue they'd been changed.

The teleport room with the berserk and pinkies you are correct. They are asleep when you teleport in. Also I think on UV there's four or six of them.

In defense of the map makers, it is probably because they have played a ton of maps that may have been recreations/remakes of classic maps, and those memories have bled into their memories of the original Doom. Memories be weird that way.

24:10 For those interested: Chainsawing cacos works because chainsaw and chaingun have identical rate of fire, so they're theoretically exactly as effective in stunlocking them. It's minimally more dangerous because if you're in melee attack and pain state fails, you will take damage immediately, while if you're further away and using a chaingun, caco will simply shoot a single easily dodgable fireball. Also as shown here, if caco moves away you need to react quickly by moving, instead of simply adjusting your aim.

This is kind of like inspecting someone's dream after they played too much doom 1. Very interesting, only thing missing is that they'd also be required to draw the textures out of their memory. But that's a bit too much work eh...

I do agree that it goes against the idea of the project if they aren't just going by memory but I would think that they probably got to this point and was like rather than just going by memory you can have some freedom in adding stuff as long as it doesn't go completely off what the original maps were like. I do have some mixed thoughts about this like some maps do seem good and better I think it's just the size of some of rooms that's putting me off and as it's meant to be a recreation of the original from memory those added bits which looks like they just wanted to make it look cooler I dunno I can't think of the right words to use at the moment to really get across what I mean I don't want to sound like I'm just picking fault with it because I couldn't do this making all of these from memory so it is good just I don't know there's something not right with it lol so I guess it really works lol. Cheers for the upload decino

You know what I think it is doom was the first game I actually played myself as a kid and it started my love for fps games and doom in general has played a big part in my life and got me through some really hard times even to this day so I have very strong feelings about it and its like when a band covers one of your favourite songs and they don't quite do it right or at least the way you think it should be done I think that's why I have mixed feelings about this in all honesty

I also have never seen that bullet hits in the air bug, laughed quite a bit at those rockets ignoring the caco not gonna lie :p
@robertsneddon7313 жыл бұрын
My guess is that autoaim was picking up on something way off in the distance, maybe a wall texture as the result of a large-map block bug of some kind so the caco wasn't the rockets first choice of holiday destination.
