I'm incredibly happy to say that my mom, my dad and my older brother were all playing video games as well, my brother even played multiplayer games with me on seperate computers, and they never blamed any of my mental instabilities upon them. They always listened and knew that school was the problem, or people that ignored me at school, always trying to help me get better and push through, and never took away my coping, which was playing video games. Of course, they would tell me to study more, but never took away my pc as "motivation" or "punishment" they knew what games mean to me as a hobby, and my dad saw me play some games on the PC and always researched upon them, even if new, he always figured out the names of the characters by looking the game up on the internet. I absolutely love my family for introducing me to gaming. They support me so much so that when I was still a child/teen, they would help me buy some games by their card, or in-game currency, of course, only occassionally so I wouldn't be addicted to spending money ingame. For bdays, and stuff like that. They supported my decisions in getting a gaming laptop, and for my partner, they also provided some stuff like old monitors for her own gaming PC, since my dad works as an IT guy and can get his hands on some old monitors that are free because they are having minor issues that he can fix himself at home and they work just as new, same with other PC components. I used to play Doom as a 5 year old and I still do today, and I would never hurt another person by words, let alone physically. I'm scared of arguements and any conflict, never seeking it. Always trying to keep my calm. It saddens me to know there are people that blame video games for everything; violent thoughts, behaviour all the way to doing worse at school; and then even s*icide or m*rder.

If videogames were to be banned or something it would only increase children's problems, a lot of people play videogames to let off some steam, relax, etc me included. It is a hobby for a reason
@pyp22052 жыл бұрын
Yeah it would definitely cause some problems. I mean these people need to understand that what they think is false. Because video games do more good than "bad". I mean I'm a kind patient person (most of the time, I may not be very patient when I'm busy with something potentially important, because no one likes being disturbed). And I've been playing some mature rated games for a couple years (I was more into puzzle and casual games before that), and I'm not a violent person. I would rage sometimes for losing, I'll admit that I suck at some games (mostly first person shooters on PC, because I'm not good with aiming for some reason but I'm slowly improving on that). I typically like to play games after a day of school (and after doing any homework). Or whenever I need a break from doing something like programming. It does sometimes help me out whenever I'm not happy or whenever I need or regain some energy. I of course don't like to play certain games (most particularly online games, because they can take a long time to play and it can't be paused) before I eat, go to bed, or I have to go somewhere. Because I don't want my parents to be waiting for a long period of time. And I need to be able to fall asleep.
@markdimech13262 жыл бұрын
@@pyp2205 Honestly I can relate to that. Some people really need to learn to put themselves in other people's shoes. What's even worse is that while the media complains about videogames affecting mentally ill people and influencing them giving them violent tendencies (which definitely rarely ever happens) they only talk about SERIOUS issues like alcohol, cigarettes, etc which is stupid because they're much more deadly and on a much larger scale since it's an entire industry that sells products which harm and kill those that abuse it both mentally and physically, personally I've never seen any anti-smoking campaign or anti-drinking, mostly just rehab and it goes to show that the media only cares about money and not real news, sure the videogaming industry is good but it doesn't appeal to every audience. I'd say that the media tries to bring down gaming so that more people resort to smoking and drinking (contributing to those industries). Money makes the world go around unfortunately, people end up having to pick between money and dignity.

Doom has always been this franchise that helps me pull myself up in my darkest moments. When I was a kid - it was fear of the dark and monsters under the bed, lol. Later throughout my youth it was depression and rejection. Later it helped me address my existential fears, stress, and recently, even health issues. Playing Doom games cyclically whenever "life got hard" forced me to reflect and battle my "inner demons" (pun intended) and turn a new chapter in life in order to fix myself and be a better, healthier person for myself, and then peers around me. It has that effect on me, I guess. Speaking of violence - I get how it can affect some younglings without proper parental guidance. Kids tend to replicate everything... But then again they can replicate the news, the movies, the TV shows, as well.

This video sums up the whole topic of the actual reasons behind violence. The media one consumes does dictate one’s actions. The real life issues do, but it all gets pinned on violent video games, and as a result all the other enjoyers of those games get grouped into that category unfairly. I’ve grown up playing Super Mario and I’ve never had the urge to go outside and stomp on mushrooms and turtles. I’ve personally caught flak before for enjoying games like Call of Duty, Halo, and Doom so this topic really hits close to home.

Thanks for making this video, Midnight! I’m a media educator and work with children ages 4-18. I’ve long advocated that media isn’t the problem (especially DOOM), it’s the access parents allow at home, disregard for/no knowledge of rating systems like the ESRB, no use of parental controls (and they are literally baked into everything), and general lack of restrictions on consumed content. In our connected world, it’s very rare for parents to recognize the effects of too much alone time with technology can have on child development. It’s all learned behaviour. When kids see their family on devices, they learn that this is acceptable behaviour. The number one social thing kids need is to be heard and unless parents put in the work, there will almost certainly be a disconnect. Thanks again for a great video (as always)! Love & Respect, Sean

A painful thing as a woman who enjoys games like Doom is that everyone doubts I actually enjoy them or assume I'm an insane anti-games "feminist", and that stops me from actually interacting with people over a subject I really enjoy, because I'm scared of being rejected or bullied due to people assuming I hate games due to being a woman. This isn't happening all the time, and thanks to being well, a profile pic and a name on a screen, I can just let everyone assume I'm a dude and get on with it, but it still feels like hiding. All because of these "FeMiNisT" idiots who need to touch grass. They're literally gatekeeping females away from video games, and then claiming to be feminists. So yeah. There are girls who enjoy games like Doom (That I will have to wait to move out to play, because I got lectured about realistic violence in games by my parents over DmC5. Apparently a wacky woohoo pizza man wielding two halves of an electtic demon motorbike and hitting a demon lizard that turns into a wheel in a comically over-the-top way is realistic violence, s o m e h o w.) Anyways, thanks a lot for this, people need to hear this. I'm glad it wasn't a hot take and you actually called out those people for being the liars they are. Lots just assume feminism actually is that, and it's important that someone finally makes the difference and dismantles their arguments in a civilized and intellectual way. You're breaking their whole narrative, good work! My own take on one of those Twitter posts... They are the insane ones for not managing to make the difference between a real body and a 3D render. I'm studying to work in that industry, and all I see where they see violence is a 3D render of a chainsaw playing an animation upon contact with the hitbox of another 3D rendered entity that plays its own animation upon contact. These aren't real bodies, people, and anyone who is unable to make the difference between a real body and the image of a body needs some form of reality check. I'm more worried about people loosing contact with reality over social media than violence in video games.

I have a history of violence. Not trying to chest thump or anything, I've just lived a violent life in my past, and the best way I've ever found to keep it at bay is playing violent games. Any commentary around violent games influencing violent behavior is simply demonstrably false. No evidence has ever supported it.

As someone who has played violent video games like Postal, Mortal Kombat, DOOM, Resident Evil, Dead Rising, Fallout, etc I still am shocked by "rekt"/liveleak videos and it scares me. My friends used to prank me back in the day on Skype sending me links of beheadings and other snuff videos (Because we were all edgy in our teens) and I've lost a couple nights of sleep in my teens. Spoiler: I haven't killed anyone.

Yes. Thank you. You are so right. Finally someone gets that violence in children are caused by their upbringing. This is Americas huge problem. We’re trying to remove the father from the home. @mr.x63132 жыл бұрын
I understand the difference between fiction and reality, and I still think that most brutal violence in video games is unmerited and unnecessary. However, there’s something intensely cathartic about inflicting brutal violence against inhuman, objectively evil monsters who seek the destruction of humanity. It’s not violence for the sake of it, but it’s violence with a noble goal.

Videos games themselves don't make you violent. It's the combined effects of you playing those video games and many other things and circumstances, which generally have a big influence on your mind and mental well being while the effects of playing video games is quite small in comparison. What's frustrating about the people making a big deal out it this is that they never stop focusing on the video games and take a second to look at the bigger picture and realise that its actually the combined negative effects of many different things such as a bad home life, family problems, bullying, or a pre-existing mental condition.

I have never really enjoyed games where you play as the "bad guy" , cause killing innocents who didn't asked for it just tears me appart, however I love games where you play as a guy/gal who isn't blindled by a the concept of " a never ending fight between being good or bad" like in almost every anime plot (wich can be ok but I personnaly find them to be really immature and illogical for the most part) I like Characters who accepts themselves for who they are and does what they trully wants instead of living in denial. Characters like Doomguy (especially in both classics and 2016), The team Fortress team, Duke Nukem and so many more are really likable for this, they do what they think is right and don't bother with the brainded drama queens, wich is why politics and video games don't mix at all, the Characters don't give a damn so why should we?

They want to put the blame on something other then themselves. People are the cause of violent behavior in others like bullying, negligence, exposed to violent behavior, and getting beaten. Mental health issues that they're born with kinda isn't their fault but should be treated correctly and not by beating them but might need to be straightened out like a talk. Video games (like Midnight said) aren't the main thing that causes violent behavior, they are meant to have fun and not to be taken seriously. Sure you might be a bit aggressive if your parent tells you to get off while you're in a match but it isn't going to make you want to kill them unless you have very bad mental issues. Mental issues are the main thing and people are the cause of most of those to form. The Columbine incident I wont get into much but one of the two people had a love for Doom, a little too much to the point where he said that he'll just think of people as monsters from Doom (if I'm not right saying that I'm sorry) but this kid was a very troubled kid (I believe) and not the video games fault. Putting violent video games in a extremly violent persons hands isn't too good but it isn't the game, they wanted to make their shooting huge (I believe) and they were bullied so they game isn't the main thing of why it even happened. We don't blame ourselves, we blame anything else and if we could blame ourselves and try to fix them the world might not have as much violent behavior.

Contrary to popular belief, the age rating of a game should be taken into account when deciding what game a kid should play. I played mario but watched my dad play stuff like the last of us. But when I asked if I could play, he said I'd have to wait till I was older, cuz you know, that's not a game for 3rd graders. But my dad is very lenient with what me and my siblings consumed, like we were watching stuff meant for a minimum age of 15 when we were a minimum of 10, it was fine as long as we didn't get too rowdy or influenced by it where we started misbehaving (that never happened, but if it did, we would've been corrected and probably had those privileges revoked). But that's probably the biggest problem with the "video games cause violence" thing, the parents don't do anything, they just let the kid do whatever, so like most things, this is the fault of the parents. I mean I played doom 2016 when I was 9, now I collect anime figures and dressed up as spider-man at one point. I'd also like to point out, if stuff like Rambo was ok, and no one talked about how it was a bad influence, why are games different?

Porn is too sexual. Romance is too romantic. Horrors movie are too scary Video games doesn't make you violent. At worst, they make you temporary frustrated (cause lag, bad design and lost of progress. In the last case, Word is a famously "violentisizing" piece of software who made millions of people more aggressive when it didn't auto save). In reality, it makes you competitive and focused, like with any sport. If someone is bothered while fully focused and lose a game of soccer because mom went on the field and said "Stop playing rn, go put some sun screen" right before you make a goal and you were magically forced to not do that final kick. There's a lot of papers agaisnt it. I'm now an adult. But oh god, as a kid, when i had actual anger issues, being told video game was the cause was really annoying.

I grew up playing Doom, Doom 2, Wolfenstein 3D (and sequels), Rise of the Triad, Oregon Trail, etc. I also have several high powered rifles and a shotgun. I also have battled severe depression. I have never had any thought of using my guns against any person ever. I think that, despite having several suicidal ideations, I was raised to not be violent toward other people and to walk away from physical confrontation rather than jump in. It comes down to how you were raised by your parents/grandparents/whomever.
