That said, you were very respectful and very objective about providing the information and facts you found in your research. I was in high school near there at the time that happened and played Doom, Quake, Mortal Kombat, and anything else that was uber violent and was immediately labeled as "one of those kids". Games like Doom that have been around for years and have garnered such a strong following will always come under fire and so will all of us who play them. The impact of Columbine is hard to describe unless you were alive during that time. The 90s was a fairly optimistic decade. It was the last decade of the millennium and people were wondering what the 21st century was going to bring (besides Y2K). We had a thriving economy. Even though there were political camps, there was still a great deal of unanimity. The internet was coming into its own. More and more people were owning computers and cellphones. The fun, but childish, console wars between Nintendo and Sega. Video games in general were getting better, sitcoms were still the rage, a new trilogy of Star Wars was coming out... The scandal involving Bill Clinton didn't really damage that optimism. And the tragedies that riddled the 90s in the US like: the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, the Oklahoma City Bombing in 1995, and the Thurston High School shooting in 1998, didn't seem to rattle that optimism very much either. But Columbine... Columbine had a chilling effect. It just seemed uniquely shocking and evil. Maybe because it was 11 months after Thurston? Or maybe because the stories that came out of Columbine were unnerving? That event changed everything when it came to schools. More safety drills. Zero tolerance for toy guns -- even if they were lime green translucent squirt guns, G. I. Joe finger length gun accessories, or Nerf guns that shot foam arrows. Teachers, administrators, and counselors going overboard on students who say "I'll k--- you" in a moment of anger. A culture of fear was developed in the schools and it was never really reversed. Just like the effects of 9/11 on the airlines were never reversed.
@yetanotheruser19892 жыл бұрын
Reading your post mentioning 9/11 in relation to Columbine, it never really hit me before just how close the dates of those two tragedies are. Columbine, an horrific incident that, as you say brought about an end to the sense of optimism throughout the 90's, followed barely 2 years later by an event that the world is still feeling the effects of.

I'm amazed how much research you did on layer 9, I knew about the "lost wad" but I didn't know all the other stuff. It just shows how deeply disturbed the perpetrators were. I'm excited to see what the Eternal iceberg will be like. I remember hearing how Mick Gordon created the Hell language used in the demonic chants you hear in the tracks "Prayer of the Diminished", as well as the track that features a Hell chant cover of the original Doom's track "Sinister", and the track that plays throughout the Doom Hunter mission. He apparently created the language by taking the names of countless demons across all kinds of religions, lnaguages, and mythologies and breaking the names down into individual syllables, and used it to create a fictional language that would specifically be used in the Soundtrack. In addition, the man who performed the chant, is a what's known as an Octavist, an individual who is known for being able to pitch their voice far lower than the average person when singing, even more intriguing is that there was no effects applied to his voice while it was recorded, meaning that with a combination of environmental layout, it was able to make him sound as if there was an entire chorus of demons singing it in unison.

There may be an explanation for the hate in the comment section for Seizure Doom. Not an excuse, but an explanation. I've been playing WADs since the early-mid 00's, and a few names since then became infamous within the Doom community. Doomguy 2000, the creator of Seizure Doom, was one of these infamous names. By the time he released Seizure Doom, he already built up a bad reputation for himself with the stuff he would release. Much of his work consisted of either Terry WADs or more seizure-inducing "maps" and "demos." The sad part is, it was clear that he had deep technical knowledge of the Doom engine and how to manipulate it to do cool things, but he would just squander his talent all on pointless stupidity and assaults on the senses. Joke WADs can be hilarious, and even fun to play. However, almost none of Doomguy 2000's projects were like that. With one or two possible exceptions, they're just not fun. Through a certain lens, they could almost be seen as some sort of nihilistic insult toward the player. In a, "Haha, I made something deliberately horrible and I got you to care about it! I win!" sort of way. Many of his WADs just had that terrible vibe, while others just seemed more like sh1tposts in WAD form or failed tech demos. Still wastes of time, but somehow not quite as awful. I think this is what made people so mad. That doesn't excuse the death threats, but it's understandable why people were generally so frustrated with Doomguy 2000. He was wasting everyone's time when he could've been making amazing stuff. While others are also guilty of this, everyone was getting sick of *his* crap in particular. After a while, people stopped giving him attention. Rightfully so. TL, DR: The creator of Seizure Doom was already infamous for making other unplayable joke WADs and obnoxious "tech demos" while rarely ever putting his talents to good use. That's probably why there's so much nasty stuff in his comment sections. Edit: emphasis

The "Terry" in question is a collective pseudonym for anyone who makes these maps.

@@ChopsWildRide Well it seems that it is just the start of these school deletings and really to push that games are bad...but then again... What has happened. We went from pixels to nearly real looking things in games. But it also comes down to the individual. And that there is no moral compass for people like this... they just plan out to go out in a blaze of "Glory" Taking out a lot of others before their deletion... It is the same with any and all mass deletings as they want to cause a scene and what better way than to delete several others before their self deletion or deletion by cop. But it also shows a disturbing track record as Schools have those no guns allows on school property signs... yet ever school deleings those guns come onto the property somehow. And these mass deletings happen over and over, with the only thing happening being "Ban the guns" Which wouldn't stop any of these mass deletions since there are other various methods to do it. Also shows that the people in charge of it don't want to harden schools, no increased police presences at the schools, no arming of teachers, or having anyone with a gun on the school property with the idea of defending the place. So this gets to happen over... and over again. Having to rely on police to show up. once again showing that when they are really needed. They are a long time in waiting. Minutes to hours away... And heck Uvalde is a showing of how much the government really cares about public safety.

Still gotta love people overreacting and criticizing a seizure inducing troll wad that already gives an explicit warning for you not to play it if you have seizures

Eric Harris is on the thumbnail, very spooky. Edit: amazing video. I think that the "Lost" wad from Harris never existed really, i always thought that is a just a myth which surrounds all this tragedy just for pure morbous. I mean, if you think about it, it was the only lost wad from him, how curious is that?
@gianluco2 жыл бұрын
There are actually about 5 lost WADs from Harris, which are: -Techout -Assault -Trasher -Realdeth (That's how it's spelled) The 5th WAD is kind of a mistery. In every text file that Harris embedded with his other (known) WADs he talks about REALDOOM.WAD, which is a multi-level patch. The problem is that you had to ask Harris (via e-mail) to send you the WAD, in order to get it. We don't know anything about REALDOOM, except for the fact that it has multiple levels and it's probably a patch for Realdeth. A lot of people speculate that this is the infamous WAD that simulated the shooting
@Samm0th2 жыл бұрын
@@gianluco Thanks for putting the names correctly and for correct my mistake in this case. I forgot that he made more besides realdeth. I'm still think that he never made a true recreation of the Columbine's school; i want to believe that it's just another reason which media (or at least a conservative part of the population) of the USA uses just for throwing garbage to videogames, especially the most violent ones. And yeah, it seems that this dude was a hardcore doom player and had some deep mental ilness, but i still think that everything about Realdeth (or Realdoom) sounds suspicioulsy coincident to be true. I mean, it's higly possible and i can't deny that those wads really existed, but i'm refuse to believe that he made a wad recreating his future school shooting. But well, who knows?
@gianluco2 жыл бұрын
@@Samm0th yeah I'm also a bit doubtful about the school layout stuff. How did he create the upper/lower floor?
@Samm0th2 жыл бұрын
@@gianluco That's a good question. As far i saw it, his mapping skills are very beginners (i tested some of his Deathmatch stuff and UAC Labs), far from doing something really professional (and yes, i'm aware that we are talking about 99' and we got back then some really good stuff for Doom) but when i think more about it i ended in the same place, for me this dude never did something like this lol
@billamota2 жыл бұрын
@@Samm0th There's accounts of his friend watching Harris play the school wad, apparently it was not the whole school but merely part of it. It was never uploaded to the internet from what I know

it is not specifically videogames that cause violence, it is just media in general that causes it. so basically like 50% of the internet can be blamed for some bad acts.

I don't know but its kinda an unpopular opinion of mine is that doom Is back in the days the most Christian game you can play...i mean come on you kill demons. On one KZbin channel a British pastor played that game and liked it... So it's not satanic game or else.
