To clarify, Doom is actually 3D. The reason why it uses 2D behaviour for some physics and collision calculations is because it had to run on ancient 386 machines, and 2D calculations can be significantly faster than 3D. All monsters have a height defined and a Z coordinate, it's just that the Doom engine chooses to use 2D calculations for things to keep it simple. It's also the reason you can't look up or down: the game saves a LOT of performance by assuming the pitch and roll of the camera is always 0, and that floors and walls are always at 90 degree angles, which allows for huge shortcuts when drawing walls, floors and ceilings. This is why modern source ports can easily add full mouse look without having to redesign all the maps: they're already 3D spaces :-)
@johnyendrey55902 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU. I hate it when people say "Doom isn't 3D," since that's obviously false, JUST LOOK AT THE DAMN GAME. It's more like "Doom is 3D, but it took a lot of shortcuts to get there."

uhmmm... buuut other DOOM based games has mouse look, the reason for this is also how ugly it is when you look up and down
@richardg83762 жыл бұрын
@@kebab_hill Those games are faking mouselook. When you look up and down in games like Hexen/Heretic, what is actually happening is they're just increasing the vertical length of the view, and sliding a window up and down it, if that make sense. Imagine Doom, but the screen is 3 times taller while staying the same width, and then the view is showing you a section of that height, which slides up and down as you move the mouse. That's why it looks so warped the further you look up or down, because the walls and floors are still being rendered as if the camera was looking straight ahead, it doesn't actually recalculate the angles of the view at all.
@DevineInnovations Жыл бұрын
Technically, all video and computer games are 2D or at least us 2D graphics because they all use a 2D screen. It all depends on how you define 3D graphics. Most of the people who say, "DOOM isn't 3D" seem to say that because it doesn't use polygonal modeling, which I think is BS. (Or should I say BSP. Haha, sorry, bad joke.) This is the first time I've heard the argument that DOOM is 2D because it uses 2D calculations. Thanks for clarifying that is also not true.

One of the main reasons why universities banned Doom was because of its network code. Doom's net code at release had been hacked together very quickly, and it had the flaw that the game would essentially broadcast network packets to every machine on the network even if they didn't have Doom installed. This meant a few people hosting deathmatch sessions on the network could quickly choke it, slowing it for everyone even if they weren't playing the game.

The cut Wolfenstein easter egg actually refers to an area in E1M4 near the end, specifically that one computer room where the computer itself lowers after crossing a certain linedef. Originally it had the shape of a swastika but was eventually changed in later versions. Not to mention other select changes made to maps post-release such as: -The switch in E1M1 near the green armor that allows you to go outside right from the starting room. -The removal of the bar doors adjacent to the red key bars in MAP02. -The entirety of MAP01 being moved around several times.

A few corrections: I am pretty sure Romero himself debunked the head theory. The Hans Grosse boss fight was never implemented. While there are obvious links in storyline, the plot for Doom was always as barebones as it looks. Doom not being 3D is a huge simplification. It's 3D. It's just very limited. Also not a correction, but Doom RPG actually got a sequel. It's really cool. Revenant? Not pants. Isn't it a bloody skeleton with a misile launcher chest piece? Other than that, cool video! Technically, doomguy does, at least from a technical perspective as the end goes when doomguy is below a certain level of health (not 0 cos that means you could respawn in and break "scripts"). He also ends up in hell, to argue from a story perspective. Also, the "Doom isn't 3d" is an argument made by "Misinformed Individuals"(bullshit journalists). The fact that doom can distinguish heights of floors is enough to tell that a Z-value is considered.

The doom is 2d thing again. This is a myth, things in doom does have a height and a third coordinate component actually stored in memory and actually used for physics and collisions. Projectiles can fly over your head in doom, and you can even jump over item without grabbing them, which is impossible without storing Y components in memory somewhere. Sometimes autoaim makes bullet trajectories look like an exclusively 2d, a bullet can fly straight over an enemy's head without colliding because when the angle from it to the horizontal exceeds 58 degrees, or when the enemy is too far away for auto aim to kick in (ignoring blockmap bug). Or for example, flying enemies can fly freely in 3d, when they are trying to reach the player they must fly higher or lower when stopped by a wall, and charging lost souls can bounce off floors and ceilings just by having their momentum in the Y direction inverted. Or for example, a fireball with a non-zero momentum in the Y shot by an enemy above you can and will actually hit the ground or the ceiling. Or when some enemies dies, if they are higher than the player then there's a random chance for them to have a little momentum added moving it closer to the player making corpses drop from ledges. Or hell, you can even *jump* to *higher* than kneeheight sectors by timing an archvile zap, this is called an archvile jump, and this is even used intentionally as a mechanic in some doom mapsets like sunlust. The bumping into demons thing is likely because handling collisions between player and monsters in 3d is much more complicated and much more computationally expensive when there are multiple actors stacked on top of each other, same reason with the map having no room over room; projectiles' collision on the other hand is much easier, it can just explode or deal damage to whatever touches it, and therefore can have actual 3d collision. The infinite height explosion check in doom is also a 2d check, but it's likely also to save processing power because in the source code it doesn't even bother to check the 2d euclidean distance between the center of the explosion and whatever it damages; using sum of difference in x and z makes it much cheaper for a 1990s computer, making explosions squares. So calling doom a 2d game is rather inaccurate, but neither is it truly 3d in terms of treating all 3 coordinate components equally. Doomkid made a video responding to the video mentioned. Interesting video though.

About E1M8, in the Doom manual, it states that the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, where Doom takes place, had a working teleporter connecting them. Deimos somehow got teleported to hell, probably with demon magic. But the two gates remained online and connected. Going through the Phobos gate still in Earth's solar system teleports Doomguy to Deimos in Hell. He is ambushed by demons and barely escapes and is forced to ditch his weapons and escape, which is where episode 2 starts.

I always figured DOOMGUY died at the end of E1M8, but since he was already essentially en route to Hell... Where was he gonna go, Detroit? So he wakes up on the Shores of Hell.

I always thought it was pretty obvious doom guy does ar the end of E1M8 and wakes up in Hell. The end of Episode blurb even states 'this isnt how its supposed to end...'

You messed up a little bit, so let me help you my friend! The most recent version of SRB2 is actually v2.2.10! Yup, this video actually came out around the time that v2.2.10 came out. No biggie though, it was just a mistake. Anyway I already watched part 2, some spooky stuff for sure! Love your content, hope your doing great!

actually, the unmaker does have its official name now. there's a steam ahievement titled "unholy firepower" with the description "find the unmaker". it wasn't quite official before but with the steam release, it is.
