Creative people and good planning rarely works well. Douglas Addams for instance was famous for missing his deadlines, sometimes by years. But if I were him I would try to get time enough to record a couple of Hostess episodes I could put in to replace episodes if something comes up, those should be quicker and easier to make and having an emergency episode you could insert if you get sick or whatever is a pretty good insurance. But that is me and I am not really the creative type. As long as the show is good I wont be complaining, I rather wait an extra week for a good episode then get something half-@ssed in any case. A late episode is always better then a bad one in my book. Speaking of bad, I don't think this comic was that bad compared to the other stuff Rob has written. Only half the team is annoying (which is pretty good with 90s standard, particularly with Image 90s), no ones family dies in the first issue and I at least get most of the teams powers (not future guys though). There are only 4 heroes instead of a zillion of them and they at least seems to have a little personality. I wouldn't say it sucks, just that it is "meh". We seen a lot of Rob's comics that really sucks after all. It certainly isn't good but it does what a first issue is supposed to, introducing the characters and show us a bit of their power. No origin story but you don't have to put that in the first issue, some far better creators have waited a couple of issues before having one of those. The real problem comes down to originality. There is little of that, adding Sandman's powers to the Thing is not original, the flame hero is female here, the Future guy is hardly original (Booster would kick his butt) and the self narrating megalomaniac is annoying. The evil Corporation seems to be from a spoof movie and the main bad guy seems rather boring. Not impressive stuff but I still know more about these heroes then anyone in Team Youngblood (except maybe Badrock) and we seen far more here about them.

You're right. I actually like the premise of this book. It even does some things kinda neat that the fantastic 4 didn't (although the original Marvel family is still cherished). Brick is a black superhero with sand/silicon based powers and seems like a decent person. Burn is the Johnny storm of the group with a hint of a certain x-man, and seems more measured in the approach of a character with fire powers (rather than be hot tempered, hot headed, hot something or another). Slyder is a person with a power that's more like a disability, giving their power a sort of double edge sword. Given a modern coat of paint, with more adept writers, along with some savviness instead of 90 kitsch, and this story could be made into something pretty great. Grimm sucks tho.
@paxtonstewart80423 жыл бұрын
I honestly agree. And even the writing for this issue doesn’t seem so bad. We get some decent characterization that could lead to some interesting interactions. Brick could maybe act as the emotional leader/dad of the group since he is a father, which maybe could lead to him mentoring the different members of the team and kinda acting as a mentor for the others. Burn could potentially learn to better learn to appreciate and control her powers as time goes on, potentially with the help of Slyder, maybe even developing their romance a bit with Slyder showing Burn the true benefits of her powers since Slyder actually seems to like his powers and feels like a badass. Even the leader being the generic 90s action star he is could have some interesting character moments due to the fact he isn’t really able emotionally help the team like he can tactically, as shown with the seen of Burn crying and the leader being unable to really console her. Now I kinda wanna remake this comic and turn it into something better.

It's the perfect option for a kewl '90s artist who's already notorious for running behind schedule, and needs to dash off something (that also looks '90s kewl) quickly. To anyone wondering, the reason why the movie was never made is fourfold. 1. The concept was just abysmal. 2. It was to be made by goddamn Amblin Entertainment but the studio was already deep in production of several other movies due to debut the next year (the most notable being the liveaction Casper) so thier attention was split. 3. Rob Liefeld was supposed to pen the movie but was kinda busy with all of his comic lines and running Image. And 4. The Speculator Boom was finally beginning to collapse. It began in 1993 but was well and truly happening by 1994 when Doom's IV was released. Given that, Amblin wasn't keen on the idea of adapting comic books in a style that was rapidly falling out of style (plus they were worried a comic book movie was a bad idea since the comics industry seemed to be collapsing in on itself what with the death of many small publishers and how Marvel was almost bankrupt). Sidenote; Liefeld was legally barred from revealing any backstory for Doom's IV by his movie contract for threat of a very hefty fine or even jail time. It's why the comic will bring up elements of thier past and then drop it abruptly and incredibly unnaturally. With the Speculator Boom dying which was causing the sales of this comic to tank, and no chance of the movie ever getting made, Doom's IV was cancelled.

Jean-Claude Van Dame's character in The Expendables 2 also had the name "Villain" but with a different pronunciation ("VeelAn" because he was French or something)

Misses the first few minutes of the video getting my coffee, I return and ask myself "Wait, what comic is Linkara reviewing?" Linkara says he has to flip the comic on its side for a pointless two page spread. Oh, a Rob Liefeld comic.

1:32 I think a good many of us had to learn that lesson. Whether naturally, as we got older and wiser or it was forced upon us. Either way, yeah, it’s a lesson that’s needs to learn sooner rather than later.

"Poor Literacy is kewl!" Ahem... Brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. THE Brothers Grimm. "Grimm" and "Grimmig" are perfectly normal (if, in case of the first, rather old fashioned. And yes, they are related to "Grim") German words... and, as the Brothers Grimm show, Grimm is also a normal name.
@AT4W3 жыл бұрын
Let's be real here - they are NOT trying to evoke the real last name with his character. They're doing it because it's kewl.

@@AT4W Also because Ben Grimm and Fantastic Four ripoff, which someone else brought up. Did not occur to me, but I've been off the Marvel train for probably...8+ years now?

Oh man I'm very excited for the Elmer Fudd/Batman review. A comic that shouldn't have worked at all but was surprisingly great in my opinion.
@zexalbrony47993 жыл бұрын
Ah someone's hunting Batman in the next review. Cool. Based on the wording I'm guessing it's an actual hunter-type character from the DC Universe. Sadly, I don't know too many characters from the DCU that meet that requirement, so I can't really guess. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is The Stalker from Batman Beyond. If we're actually reviewing a Batman Beyond episode or comic I will be very happy, even if the comic is complete trash that harms the character I like. Also, I always enjoy seeing 90s Kid in a review. :) Although, now that I think about it, characters like 90s Kid, Linksano, and The Ninja Style Dancer continue to find ways to be a part of reviews, but we haven't really seen Harvey be part of a review outside of a Story Line Episode. I think the last time he was part of a review was when you asked him about that Logunging Singing School in that Darkwing Duck comic you reviewed like 2 years ago.

Next review's gonna be a fun one, it's Elmer Fudd that's hunting Batman. Seriously.
@zexalbrony47993 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowKnux372 Okay, I just looked it up, because I was questioning if it actually existed and it really does. They actually made an Elmer Fudd hunting Batman comic. It's official they will make a comic out of anything. I can't wait to see the absurdity of the next review.

I’m amused that you asked about whether we like going back to watch your old episodes. I’ve been doing just that. I think I watched the early dooms iv review a couple of days ago. Currently watching the Liefeld playlist. Might watch all the storyline episodes next. Or Halloween specials.

Seems telling that the subplot of the book's lone female character is about her romantic life and desire to be a mother.

This just makes me think of the Liefeld story where he was fired from working on DC's Hawk and Dove because he made half of an issue art on its side without consulting the editor or writer! Of course RL tells a different story.....

Wow I had forgotten completely about this comic. I'll probably still forget about it later. And nothing of value was lost. On a different note, looking forward to the next loony episode ;D

I read in Fandom that Rob Liefeld was working with Spielburg to come out with a movie and this was going to be the prequel. It never got off the ground.

It's just fun to watch Linkara tear into a bad comic sometimes. Edit : For all those calling Linkara out for saying Grimm was a case of poor literacy, do you REALLY think this was referring to the Brothers' Grimm ? Or a surname ? Knowing Rob Liefeld's history ?

I was half-expecting you to bust out the Combine Harvester joke after mentioning that your initial review of the second issue is what sparked it off. XD Ah well, I guess you're right -- after years and years of this dreck, this is just basically standard 90s slog. Doesn't really deserve the hilarious breakdown music.

There once was a comic called "Doom's IV", and was king of the pirates. It had muscles, pouches, and guns beyond your wildest dreams. Before Linkara reviewed the comic, these were the final words it said. "My movie is yours for the taken, but you'll have to find it first. I left everything I own...in One Piece."
