In my experience I always use a slow retrieve. With multiple twitches. Also I'm using a tandem rig of gulp. I find multiple places in Galveston, that I can get really nice flounder. I've limited out on good keepers 16-24 in. doing this method. Just like specks if you miss them with the first one, you have the second one and BAM monsters. I've beat my beast ever, with 3 limits back to back to back. I'm using 3 in. Gulp glow in the dark shrimp with a chartreuse tail. By far the best bait I've found and believe me I've fished most of them.

I don’t recommend using light line with flounder. Flounder love to hang out around structures and in areas where anglers get hung up. For that reason I recommend using a fluorocarbon leader (because it sinks and is abrasive resistant) of about 20-30lbs.

This is honestly the best video for flounder fishing. If you ever plan on catching flounder this is the most useful video. The only thing I would recommend for people who are very impatient is to get the Gulp Pearl White, just know that the tails would be ripped off pretty quickly compared to these ZMans, but you get quicker bites because the Gulp just has that quick but very weak tail.

I really found this video very intriguing. I fish the great south bay on long island, near the Wantagh bridge. The water depths are generally from 10 to 30 feet. Do you think this method works well I depths up to 30 feet? I already bought several of these jigs last year, but haven't used them yet. I normally use a 1 1/2 ounce to 3 ounce bucktail with a teaser tipped with gulp mullet. I jig from my boat 1 to 2 MPH drift speed. I generally do well but still would like to try something different. And I liked you're instruction of how to retrieve. Your thoughts on depth??? Thanks for a very well explained approach! Rick

My largest Fluke/Flounder fell to a squid jig with a bergal fillet in Peconic Bay. It weighed in at 11lbs2oz. and it was taken on a 'dead-stick in the rod holder in about 60 feet of water. Often the wave action and the right rod(fast action) and braided line. Follow the squid, spearing, peanut bunker and especially in bays 'striped killie's' drifted or slow trolled. Catch them up folks!

It's surprising when using live baits anyway how even a small flounder will hit a large bait. They have huge mouths when they open it to get a meal. Thanks for sharing. I'm not a artificial fisherman inshore but only because I have never used them my confidence is with live mullet or pinfish. Jimmy Price flounder king loved jigs and artificials for flounder.

In my experience, short strikes like that are going to be either small fish or trash fish like pin fish or puffers. Keeper flounder will typically eat it pretty aggressively. I'm in the Florida Panhandle though so YMMV.

Flounder will sometimes suspend right under a school of bait vs just laying on the bottom. You can even see them popcorn out of the water slapping the bait with their tail and then eating what they kill. They spin a circle slapping at the bait with their tail as well. When there feeding like this you can see the flounder nip at other fish competing for the same bait. Other times they will school right under fish busting bait and eat the injured ones that fall to the bottom. It just depends how hungry they are. When hungry there extremely aggressive and will chase down basically what they can fit in their mouth.

Flounder, fluke, sole, whatever they are considered, still part of the flounder fam, these fish are very aggressive when feeding and fishing for them. I've caught them on Buggs lures, on gulp, on D. O. A. Shrimp, even caught them on frayed string with smeared peanut butter. I don't think there's any type of special bait to use for flounder. I see as long as they're visible then their great bait. Tight line's never stop!
