I personally read Manmade Horrors as being more about the ironic transformation of sexual deviance and anti-capitalist symbols into capitalist consumerist products. The manmade horrors are not the things themselves but the irony in their construction for mass consumption.

especially evidenced by the line "bought a Che Guevara shirt from Zara on sale". There's an anti capitalist through-line with the sexually liberated tracks like Sodom and Gomorrah, too. That track remarks on the absurdity of commodifying tragedy. Unfortunately that theme mostly comes out in the music video and less so in the lyrics.

imo my agenda was a collection of really great songs, while fanfare is a great _album._ on fanfare, every song flows into the next, building a cohesive narrative with a consistent POV. originally the singles felt a little meh, but i fell in love with them once i heard them in context. everything just feels incredibly intentional too. sometimes hyperpop can devolve into unmotivated noise, simply loud without a thematic or melodic purpose. but in fanfare, everything from the lyrics to the music to the placement of the tracks in the album feels like a deliberate, careful choice. it’s beautifully done and dorian should be proud.

sorry, hard disagree. my agenda is one of my fav albums ever because of how thematical it is. Fanfare seems a lot more like a very loosely connected collection of tracks with no cohesive theme. still liked the record tho
@ShaiGuyz
@ShaiGuyz 7 ай бұрын
Hard disagree almost on a flipped opposite. My agenda has one POV, one central theme and character that goes thru it from start to finish. Fanfare similarly tackles a lot of ideas and themes and TRIES to tie them together but the character POV is nowhere near as solid as My Agenda so it sounds cohesive (especially musically) but thematically it feels like a lot of disconnected concepts.
@ShaiGuyz

I have to clarify that I liked fanfare a lot and I think it’s lyrical themes are THE BEST part of it. For me though, it doesn’t always mesh hand in hand perfectly with the music imo like flamboyant and my agenda did. Flamboyant was glittery and ultra queer pop music as a big exploration of different types of masculinity toxic or otherwise. My Agenda is loud ass EDM cause it’s a satire of gamer culture and uncle culture that’s loud first and hides a lot of sentimentality under layers of irony. There’s no reason from a thematic perspective that I can tell, why the music side has to be so nu metal inspired. The critique from the lyrics feels like it’s all about nihilism and sexual repression n such. Idk how much nu metal fits there.

I'm honestly surprised there was no mention of Yes Man. It's one of the most epic songs on the album, and it seems to be part of a trilogy (Manmade Horrors, Yes Man, Anon). I do agree that it's oddly more pop adjacent than previous albums, despite the heavy sounds. But I think the album is much more cohesive than Anthony realizes.

Here's my unsolicited take: The album is actually a commentary on the underground pop community. It demonstrates how DE could literally put out the safest, on-the-nose themes and dump a load of hyper-pop instrumentation on it and we'd eat it up. Notice the lack of facial expressions and posing that DE does in the MVs for the tracks. They're ridiculing how even the most alternative of spaces/artists and creative platforms are becoming commercialized and shallow. I am convinced this is all performance art meant to make us question the sincerity of the supposedly alternative artists we follow and listen to. 🤷

Ahh it feels good to see someone with a similar take. I got this sick feeling in my stomach halfway through listening to the album that I didn't understand at first, but something just felt... off about it. As I listened more I got the feel of how by the books, bare bones some of the elements are, while also being very dramatic and catchy, and the up front dissonace at just the perfect moments... I think they're saying... Why are we all falling for this shit? Why are you falling for it? Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take and now I'm a bigger fan than I was pre-fanfare😂 Blessings

100% you can also see that in listening to the music through the video vs the album. I couldn't even make it through the music videos for puppet and anon, they were just so repetitive and annoying, but on the album, in the context, they're still not great but they at least are listenable. The videos seem specifically designed to annoy with the constant repeating of the same visuals. It all clicked when I heard yes man tho. "cut the fucking fanfare"

I think this album is a story. Aside from the opening song "Symphony" and the ending song "Wanna be a star," the 11 songs in between feel like they have a dramatic three-part structure. I think the peak of this album is "Yes Man" which you didn’t talk about. It was very artistic to sublimate a painful experience into a piece of music, and to dramatize the flow of their personal emotions into the song. Even though the songs are made with great care and attention to detail, they maintain an honest flow of emotion, which gives me a sense of catharsis. I thought that many people would be saved by this song. The highly entertaining sound has the fun of involving us fans in the drama, and the unique sound effects inserted at perfect timing are amazing and make the mood even more exciting.

Great review, honestly interesting and I can't help but to agree this is the most palatable of their work, but I would defend the 2000/2010s pop aesthetic as an intentional choice since starting with My Agenda you get a ton of sonic references to early Internet-originated electronic music styles. There are absolutely some tracks on this one that just straight up remind me of MCR's Black Parade with those big stadium rock sounds in some of the tracks as well as some very specific compositional/structural choices I've never really heard outside of music from that time period.

Eh, can't win em all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm really enjoying this album but I also took awhile to distill my thoughts on it. I would say it is Dorian's most mature and personal release by far, with richer instrumental palettes (the branding used horns for a reason) and a very cohesive mood. It feels nostalgic but fresh and uniquely Dorian by taking 90s-2000s music trends and influences from their youth then throwing them all in a blender. Didn't expect to be emotionally moved by a ska finale for one. I think it's harder to pull out a core thematic thruline from this album than Flamboyant or My Agenda where you can easily draw the line from whatever a song is talking about back to masculinity. There were over a hundred demos in the development of this album so it makes sense that it would be less laser focused. I think the overarching thruline for me is commodification, which links in with the pop idol rise and fall arc. Both pop stars and literal stuff are created in "factories" to be consumed for novelty and entertainment then trashed. I think the horny lyrics that are explicit rather than innuendo have an immediate shock value reflecting this. The aged, degraded elements of the visuals and costuming tie into this really nicely with a decaying, lonely, maybe even store-bought opulence.

Fantano seems to think Puppet is about extreme sex, and yes, it uses sexually coded language. But it's really about being a modern celebrity -- you know, the explicit theme of the album -- and the addictive love/hate feeling of being controlled by an online fandom. Using fisting as a metaphor for internet fame is exactly the kind of conceptual strangeness he says the album is lacking. IDK, it's like he listened to it once or twice and didn't really give it any analysis before writing the review.

Everything you pointed out after the first minute is why I like it, but thats how it goes. Its one of my favs of the year, even if its not amazing. I actually like that it is somewhat less chaotic and unhinged. We have to move away from the iconic, but overdone "pots and pans" gecs hyperpop sound eventualy. Tracks like "Idolize" and "S&G" are good examples of accessible poptunes with edge to me. I will agree on "Manmade Horrors" sounding almost oppositional/conservative out of a sudden. A lot of the lyrical content is funny and hits home for queer people who see their identity demonized, yet commodified at the same time. The album encapsulates that dichotomy very well. This feels more so like a transition than a safe zone imo. I want to see more unusual pop that pushes into the mainstream, than just staying unaccessible for the sake of it. The overall concept was a bit weaker and less layered than "My Agenda", but I prefer this one musicaly, more bops. Its a light 8 for me. Im suprised the opinion on this Album outside the core fanbase is pretty bad. To me, it was obvious we can not get something as extreme and pop-culturey as "My Agenda" every time - if they leaned even more into memes and references to reddit incels etc. Id even say that would have been a big mistake. Being that "noisy" and only understandable with urban dictonary again would have coined them as _that artist_ for sure. Im excited to see where they go next.

@@wpbn5613 I’m strapping in for the possibility of the dreaded red flannel myself 😬 And that’s hilarious, you’d take out some of my favorite tracks lol. I do get if the lyrics of Zig turn you off as they aren’t my favorite, but the instrumental GOES. And I think Hard might actually be my overall best song on the album. I hope that if this sister album that’s being teased ends up being a thing that I enjoy it more, as I hate to feel sorta mid on anything Poppy as I’ve liked to loved everything up until this one.

@@JoshLeitzelI can get past the lyrics but I hate the instrumental of Zig. Easily the worst mixing on the album too. The "I'm awake I'm AWAKE IM AWWWKWKWKWK" is the final nail in the coffin for me lol

i agree this album is relatively safe for them, but i’m just glad they’re not toning it down to radio levels ala rina and charlie. i can’t complain at all - the songs are great, still weird, still fun, all bangers and well executed. your flamboyant review was what turned me on to them, though, so thank you for that. seeing them for the second time in the spring, couldn’t be more excited!

I love fanfare lol. I get and agree with a lot of the critiques here but I appreciate that the album here is much less pointed, because I love that it leaves the songs' meaning and intent up to interpretation. I've spent a lot of time reading their artist statements, and its' interesting the way they double up meaning with their lyrics and stacking themes on top of each other.

I don't get why every album needs to be groundbreaking and monumental or have a clear ongoing theme to be enjoyable. Yes, This record played into some normal pop conventions, but this was contrasted with some alternative rock and edm production as well. The lyrical themes while disconnected gave a great perspective on Capitalism Great record imo

@@DietDrKelp-ti3zs But he clearly stated he didn't find it to be the case in this album. He didn't say "it's toned down therefore it's bad", he said "it's toned down and that didn't favor this album", which is obviously subjective because, well, it's a review. Personally I'm more inclined to listen to the album now that he said it's toned down even if he didn't enjoy that, because Doran's previous records are a bit too much for my taste.

The only two tracks that I didn’t quite click with were “warning signs” and “yes man” I dunno, those ones just didn’t really do it for me and “idolize” and “anon” almost don’t click but I ended up enjoying. My favs have to be “phonies” and “manmade horrors” though. The pre-release tracks would probably rank higher if I didn’t hear them so much already.

This album was a perfect intro to Dorian, allowing space to dive deeper. Definitely made to appeal to a wider group, which is partly how all of my friend group came to enjoy Dorian… each of us prefer a different album from the previous releases, but we all agree on this one. Fantastic album, even though I think the green album is better

I kinda get where you're coming from. You didn't say anything I necessarily disagree with. I think it's a 7, maybe an 8 on a good day. My straight friends were not too overwhelmed when I played it, and that says something. I can't believe you didn't mention "Yes Man" or "Lifetime", though. Two of their best songs ever. I'm also seeing them live in a month and I feel like it's going to be an absolute blast to experience.

While Fanfare isn't my favorite album from Dorian, I still really enjoyed it and would probably rate it a 7.5 if I had to give a rating. Sure, it was a lot more "safe" than their previous albums, but for me that didn't stop me from enjoying it. It's a solid album IMO, just not Dorian's best work, definitely could have been better but I still really enjoyed it. My favorite song off Fanfare is probably actually Idolize, simply because it's a really fun and catchy song that is very reminiscent of early 2000's dance pop.

Idolise was the first song I heard from Dorian from a good friend (I may have heard Flamboyant eons ago but I'm unsure) and, yeah, while a song I very much enjoy, it does not represent Dorian as a whole, I found out. I've found it a bit difficult to journey through but I've found a lot of what I like (Ram It Down, Manmade Horrors, Freakmode etc). I'm seeing them with this friend in January so hopefully the vibe can ease me in more.
