Are you training enough to get better? Or are you surviving on 1 BJJ class a week? If you are trying to improve at anything there is a sweet spot on the right amount of exposure to the skill you need to get better. Too much will have diminishing returns and can lead to injury, too little and you stagnate or even go backwards.
From mastering a Pull up to perfecting a sweep the right Dosage for you to master that skill is uniquely individual. JT & Joey breakdown their different approaches in the gym and on the mat to find out just how much you need to do to level up.

One of my black belts always tells the class "i wont tell you something is wrong unless it puts you in danger" and sometimes there are times when it does and doesnt put you in danger

I’m 27. Been training 8 months, could barely finish 2 classes a week and recovery took the rest of the week when I started. Now I train about 8-10 hours a week on the mat, about 6-8 hours of them are in a very judo influenced bjj class It’s been a few weeks since I started basically training 5-6 days a week and I can say I’m feeling great. For anyone who feels they have trouble getting back momentum after rest days, my advice is to add more bjj days in this way: 1) progressive overload: start with an x amount of days you feel comfortable. Add one day. Stay at that for at least a couple weeks until you feel completely used to it. Then wait one or two more weeks to make sure you have adapted. Notice your performance, do you get tapped or gas out faster with your relatively newer training partners that you usually beat? Wait until your performance is exactly the same as before and maintain that performance for one or two weeks. Do not focus on how you feel every day of the week but the average feeling of the whole week. Repeat with increments of one or two days/hours per increase. If you can’t feel normal after two weeks it means you went too hard. Take an off week training at 70-80% intensity of your desired new increment. Focus on recovery. Then try again. 2) fix your sleep: get rid of as much caffeine and sleeping pills as you can, learn to fall asleep on command, make sure you’re sleeping good. If you don’t do this then it will simply be impossible to train daily it is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. It’s non negotiable, no caffeine except 6 hours before bed, no electronics 2 hours before bed, no caffeine unless you train and you do it hard or you’re about to skip training and need something to push through it, etc. Once you can wake up and fall asleep even if you didn’t set up an alarm for it, then you can attempt training more days a week. Otherwise it will very likely end in failure over the long term
