US DOT’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued two emergency waivers for hazardous materials compliance this month. The waivers apply to people working under the direction of US EPA and the US Coast Guard in areas impacted by natural disasters.
The first waiver was issued on September 17 and applies to areas in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana impacted by Hurricane Sally. The second waiver, issued on September 20, waives compliance with the Hazardous Materials Regulations California and Oregon counties experiencing wildfires.

Workplace safety regulators in California recently issued another round of penalties to employers for failure to protect workers from COVID-19. The largest COVID-19 related penalty we’ve seen so far was over $50,000, issued to a chicken processing facility. California also plans to amend its state workplace safety regulations to add worker protections and require employee COVID-19 training-and they’re not alone.

US EPA continues to knock out chemical risk evaluations required by the reformed Toxic Substances Control Act one after the other. On Friday, September 25, EPA announced its final risk evaluation for a group of flame retardants known as Cyclic Aliphatic Bromide Cluster compounds, including one called hexabromocyclododecane or HBCD.
