I get a huge laugh out of the ignorant (but probably well meaning) people out there that think that the _only_ reason the thousands of us that run car tires is just to save money! 250,000 miles on three bikes all running dark. Love it so much! 👍

Ok guys like your opinion totally. Here's my story. In 2020 I always wanted a older wing 1800. Found a 04 for 5g's. Great condition. Road it for a year. Rear tire got a flat plus it was shot. I been watching many vids on the pro's and con's on car tire. O hell you'll be riding on the side wall. B.S. So wanted to try. I got a Dunlop 75$ 50000 miles rating and there was no issue finding a tire to fit at all. I asked my mechanic if he had a issue installing he said no. So had it done also with centramatic balancers .spelling maybe off. Going by other riders what to expect. At first leaning took a little more effort like I heard. Slow speeds what I call parking lot speed the wing was a lot more stable. First long ride about 200 mls in all types of roads. After about 100 mls or less I couldn't tell I had a car tire on it. I'm 64 and not a speed demon but I have a 20 mile curvey road that I love to ride with my wing or my vstar . One day early this year I took that road and pushed the envelope to see how this so wrong car tire handled pushing the envelope( I did get a tire that had good tread radious. I was dragging peg on almost every curve with absolutely no slipping or handling issues at all. NO PROBLEMS👍 I will always run one on my wing. Maybe even my vstar when I wear that rear tire out. Plus it's great in rainy weather. I live in N.W. Oregon. Well that's my story guys. Have a great and safe riding new year.👍😎

My personal tally (opinion) from riding regular and dark across various mid-size and heavy bikes: *Darkside advantages:* -Better traction -Cheaper to purchase -Far longer lifespan -Ability to run low/flat -Ability to make emergency tire patch *Mc advantages:* -Easier to seat the bead -Availability *Gray areas:* -Apparently public opinion is touchy, it goes either way really fast. Diehard preferences on both sides of the aisle. -Handling, it depends largely on the bike, the tire, tire pressure, and overall preference, and is thus too difficult to assign to one or the other side. I have one on my bike and can scrape pegs going through roundabouts without any issues in handling. She handles like a dancer that wants you to take her hand and fly. Don't even feel that ridge in the tire. Don't get me wrong, I love riding either way. I love how y'all are "stirring the pot" to induce conversation, keeps people engaged. If I needed help at y'alls shop and need a tire, I would have no objections to a regular on my bike instead of a CT. It's a tire, it fits the bike, and it works. I'd just make ready to switch back once that one wears out, simply by preference.

For decades I thought, "I'd NEVER put a car tire on any of my bikes." For years, I also told myself "I'd NEVER want to pull a trailer behind any of my bikes." Why did I think that? It's irrelevant, really, but I always held those strong opinions that I "would NEVER"... until I did. I've had a one-owner used 2008 ST1300 for a few years, and have ridden some 30K miles now. Bought a sweet used Bushtec so my German Shepherd can go with me on trips. He digs riding. And I dig having him with me. It handles great behind the ST, nary a problem. As have many, I've read about the Dark Siders for years, but kept saying "not for me." Some of the ST owners kept talking about it, one found a newer, rounder car tire, so I tried it. Pleased and delighted doesn't begin to tell the story. SO in the end -- you be you, and think what you want. I'll be me, and do what I want. While I can, anyway. I'm 67, I've ridden every bit of 50 years now, and still not done yet. Remember... for a good long while, everyone "just knew" the earth was flat, and the sun revolved around our world, too. But somehow, we've come to change our minds. Most of us, anyway. Hmmm...

Ha not only Harleys but also Cushman American made scooters (long gone now) in the 40-50s used flat profile std 4.00x8" trailer tires ! They'd race with & compete against European Vespas that ran - you guessed it - round profile expensive imported from Italy scooter tires. By all reports the Cushman held their own & raced against the fancy Vespas, all on square / flat profile "trailer tires". Shades of early Darksiding anyone ?

Great entertainment, not very good with the subject. I have a car tire on my BMW K1600GT and it ROCKS in the mountains of Utah. I routinely run with the sport bike guys. The OEM tire went 29 HUNDRED miles. I have 8000 on the BFG 205/50-17 Comp2 AS and you can't even tell it's worn. On the right motorcycle, (big, heavy, powerful and loaded) it is simply transformative. I just did a video with both my K1600GTs, one DS one not. I also have a lot of other vids of me in the mountains. Take a look! You're welcome to come ride it anytime. :)

Also, the bike comes with 190/55-17, isn't the 205 car tire too wide and will rub on the sides of the bike? What about cornering with a car tire ? Thank you.

As someone who runs a car tire front and rear. A ride around the parkinglot or even a couple mile ride not going to get you used to the tire. After a 1000 miles you are no longer thinking about the tire. If you didn't know it had a car tire on it you wouldn't notice it had a car tire on it.

I have a 2004 Vulcan 2000. My back tire is a Uniroyal Tigerpaw Touring 205/55R16 and I use 3 ounces of balance beads. It rides amazing and scrapes pegs in the corners. Compared to the BattlAx that came on it, it has the same speed rating, a higher load rating, more plies making it a stronger tire, more siping to redirect water, and has a larger contact patch than a MC tire even in turns. A 30 second ride in a parking lot with a 300 pound Vespa is not enough to make an informed decision. Ride a big bike with a car tire and you'll see the worries are just that, worries, with no basis in reality. Thousands of people ride darkside every year without issue. The darkside isn't meant for little bikes, it's meant for the big cruisers. The 1500cc and up crowd. We don't hate you, we just think you're ignorant on the subject. Nothing wrong with ignorance, you don't know what you don't know.

I always enjoy watching video that are opinionated with no facts backing feelings and emotions. So instead of laying out insults of the ignorance that people use emotion to back a decision they have made, I will use my decades of experience dating back to the mid 70’s. We used to take the 18” rear wheel and unthreaded, replace with a 15” wheel with new spokes. We than would install a power streak Goodyear A78-15 tire to drag race for more traction. As the introduction of the radial tire, the side wall flex would allow for even better grip, more traction and better handling. So let’s come to now the present, for our big bikes that weigh over 1000 lbs and bike tires that are dangerous because (fact) there weight rating is barely 900lbs. So I ride a 2016 Goldwing and pull a trailer that weighs 400lbs. This year I went on a 13 day tour, completed my coast to coast in 48 hours for the iron butt ass. Toured up through Washington, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, etc. i completed my 48 state, total miles for this trip was 8216mile. Last years tour was over 5500 miles. Plus all the riding in between, all on the same rear tire.. I know for a fact that after being run off the road in the rain and stopping before, with out the rear tire locking up, hitting a guardrail in New Your. I have been down the tail of the dragon, up the Pacific coast, throw Yosemite national park, mountains of Kentucky/Tennessee/ North Carolina. Watched motorcycles reck. In front of me (on motorcycles tires). So we must learn not to use feeling when making decisions. Most decisions are made on emotion and than people back those decisions with so kind of logic that makes them feel good. Just for information I have over 26000 miles on my back tire and I love to push the envelope. Have you put over 100,000 miles on a car tire. Remember no feelings. Motorcycle manufacturers sell ties to make money. There rear tires only last 8000 miles so what do you think there going to say..FACTS ONLY FACTS

The level of Emotion / No Facts coming out of these hosts mouth was sky high: They've GOT to be B!DEN voters. They made not the slightest effort at objectivity, then again they SELL MOTORCYCLE TIRES for a living in their shop. Expecting objectivity from them, uh, NO. I just Darksided my "new to me" 2008 Suzuki V-Strom 650 and this after logging 10,000 miles Darksided on my prior ride, a Burgman 400 Maxi Scooter. I'll NEVER mount a rear M/C tire again. Why punish myself with $150 tires 3-4x per year & all that hassle ? Once DS tire is broken in you totally forget it's a car tire & ride same as before. The joke really is on guys like this who let prejudiced* thinking rule their assessment of new information. * To Pre-Judge a matter hastily and incautiously without considering all factors bearing upon it.

It's got better stopping and starting in slick conditions, better wearing and handling on graded and gravel roads is so much better. Now I'll be the first to admit that handling is different. Not bad but different. The bike still wants to upright itself. But you definitely need to put more into your lean to move.

I put a CT on my Yamaha Stratoliner and love it. I too have ridden for 56 years. My rear tire is a 215/60/17, Yokohama Avid Touring S. My front tire is a Dunlop American Elite. My bike handles perfectly. With the original Bridgestone, it handled poorly. The rear tire bossed the front tire. But with the American Elite, the Elite bosses the rear tire. I'll never go back on the Strat. My Harleys have MT's front and rear.

Just Darksided my 2006 AN400 Burgman Scooter. Used a UK spec 145/60r13 in place of 130/70r13 Shinko M/C & Scooter tire. Just today, so only 40 test miles so far. Initial miles felt Great ! I was not impressed how in 5,000 short miles my MC rear tire was approaching bald in center. Part of the reason is it's a small contact patch in very center whereas the CT -. a Michelle Compact Radial, btw, puts all 5" of its width on roadway. It felt more stable & smoother over bumps by far. Can also handle more weight.. There you have it, a hate free Darkside testimony. I'll even go on record saying in this case,, God seemed to recommend the "Darkside" !!! (Biblical humor lol)

Okay a one-year update: I put 10,000 miles on that Michelin car tire on my Suzuki Burgman 400 Maxi-Scooter mentioned above, a great trouble-free experience - 2.5 X lifespan versus the motorcycle tire. I got rid of the Bergman & now have a Suzuki ADV bike - V-Strom 650 and and am Dark siding it w/ a 205/55r17 Petlas PT741 performance car tire. The prior owner of this V-Strom had just installed Pirelli Angel GT tires before I bought it last Fall & now the rear wore out in 7,500 miles & at 8 months old. It seems like if you're a near daily rider like me - 15-20,000 annually - these frequent rear tire changes 3x per year every 4 months - amount to abusive cost & effort levels. Boy am I looking forward to about 15-20 k miles out of this beefy 205 tire. This is the widest tire a V-Strom can accommodate - 8.1" wide - so traction is hugely increased. What's funny to me is my cornering is actually better firmer stronger than with the prior MC tire. But don't tell the naysayers & these hosts who MUST toe the official line - one must assume to keep the cash registers humming & keep the animals from roaming too far off the reservation lol. Good ole media: never let facts get in the way of a story.

You have you're opinion and you are welcome to it but it is biased from non real world riding experience on a Darksided bike. A quick ride on a MP3 and then say it is bad..... Not real world. Read some replies below. I'd bet any one of those owners below would allow you to ride 300-500 miles one day on their bike, I would. Matter of fact, it you are in the Blaine WA or Surrey BC Canada area, I have two bikes and we could ride up the mountains pass.... I live in Blaine and work 3 days a week in Surrey. I have a 2008 Suzuki Burgman 650 with 70,000 miles on it. Of those 70K miles, only the first set of tires were OEM Battleax TH01's. After 6,000 miles I went Dark and never looked back. I also pull a single wheel trailer behind my scooter. I have been all the way to almost all 4 corners of USA on 1 rear Car tire, 9,800 miles in 3 weeks. Blaine WA to Jackson MO, then to Ellsworth Maine, changed oil. Ellsworth to Miami FL, fixed a flat in Atlanta GA. Miami to San Diego CA, Changed oil. Then to Salt Lake UT and finally back to Blaine WA. So 2 oil changes and 1 flat fixed, and used 175 gallons of gas for 9,800 miles.... Pushing my Scooter with a flat 160/60 14 motorcycle tire is almost impossible. With a 175/60 14 Car tire it is impossible.

I have tried a motorcycle that was darkside converted. For me more what I guess that you will call a canyon rider, it is absolutely a NO. Handling and cornering are very bad in comparison. But I can see ehere I think going darkside have it purpose. Exampel if I get a bike mainly for commuting on highway, cause not want to stay hours in traffic jam. I think it might be a good choise. But for riding motorcycle in the twisties absolutely not.

Personally I agree, it doesn't have the proper curve radius to allow for smooth hardcore cornering. IMHO. And duel compound sticky tires have extra soft shoulders, car tires will never have that.

Right on. Nobody recommends going Darksided for crotch rocket canyon racers, for the reason you stated those bikes need optimized high lean angles tires. However we who have Darksided our rides are doing so for many practical reasons that are more the province of loaded high speed highway tourers or daily high mile commuters - simply NOT in the same universe of Canyon Racers. That said, we're not Dying in the corners or even going slow we do just ride to the relatively high limits that even a car tire allows on a motorcycle, once tire is broken in & PSI are dialed.

So why can't they make a motorcycle tire as cheap as car tires and make them last? It's all about the money. We are getting ripped off. CT manufacturers should be making 18" narrow versions of CT's with some radius, but why not? Government regulation would be my guess. Even if no cars can use that kind of tire they should still make them and then state they are not for motorcycles. We would still buy them as long as they were safe and worked well.

Not convinced the trailer tire is a good idea. Your simple logic makes some sense but trailer tires are designed to roll along, not to be driven by the drivetrain. The stress is different on the tire.

Thousands of riders have been doing it for years without any dramas at all. No proof whatsoever that darksiding is dangerous, show us your statistics. Worn to the cords in 2 months. I'm not touching Michelins with a 10-foot pole. I have no problems buying tires, what bothers me is how often I have to take the time to do a change, as I do all the labor myself. Besides that, after riding darkside I have found no reason to not use it. The only problem I see is getting it mounted on the rim, as they sometimes can be a pain to get to seat. Ridden several darksided bikes, and plenty of regular, overall preference at this point is to the dark ones.

Good testimony on how much people prefer car tires on a bike over Marathons or whatever. Has to be reasons for it. I wonder if they wear cupping or feathering as much. Choosing economy over a bit of handling characteristics isn't always so stupid. Whenever I get new motorcycle tires, the bike will fall over when turning and it takes some getting used to. I've never really noticed a worn tire suddenly cause the bike to want to fall over late in the lean. I never really noticed that. Maybe racers like their bikes to fall over easy, but I don't race. Running a CT can save a lot of money. It's not just a little bit. Have we ever heard of beads that don't seal, or blow outs on the road with a CT? Just wondering. Do they ever break the bead while riding?

Try taking the rear wheel in to an open minded shop with your new car tire in hand. I called 3 Cycle service shops here in So Cal and all 3 said, "No problem....I was 100% upfront". You reduce their liability by bringing wheel assy & your own tire.

@@MotoStoriesandmore Here on KZbin you can find a rider on a GL1800 who is just shredding at Deal's Gap with a big fat car tire on the back of it. Way harder than I ride. The last time I rode Deal's Gap I had a 600 Katana and it was lot of fun. But sport bikes need more cornering rubber and Gold Wings do not. The pegs touch down too soon. So for my kind of riding, and most other people's as well, a car tire is just fine.

Decrease the radius of a curb 🤔 Cars still beat motorcycles around the turns, corning all day long. Most modern bikes American (Metric bikes have been running a 180 since early mid 2000’s) bikes 2009 fwd…today will take a 195 60 16 or 205 60 16, 195 55 16, as well as a plethora of other tire sizes …GW’s 205 60 16 is fairly common tire…so not sure where you’re getting these fish stories, putting your hand 12 inches apart to demonstrate width of a CT vs MC 🤔 …it’s not exactly an odd tire size…post 2009? HD Ultra used to run a narrow tire 150?..however since they’re now a 180 rear. So, it’s quite easy and more and more common to see a 195 or even a 205 CT I find it interesting the loudest mouths anti CT vitriolic comments, are those who NEVER rode Darkside 🤔 Sorry, don’t count 5min on a Vespa as having experience with DS. Of course the MC shops who makes their money selling $300+ MC tires are going to be adamantly against CT’s. No offence guys, but ….gain of salt. The fact is, there are thousands of riders out there putting millions of miles each season on their CT’s and not one of them have gone up in flames any more than a bike on a MC tire, push any tire beyond its means or the riders talent, lack of maintenance …and you’re going down…in fact ….because the MC tire is so expensive, you tend to see riders stretching their tires well beyond where there should be changing them….. Of course CT is not for everyone, or all bikes….if you have a crotch rocket…CT is not for you..however, LT, or Touring and having 35+ years of riding, putting anywhere from 20-30k/year ….riding all over N America, BlueRidge Mountains, The Dragon, The Snake, single and 2-up 1000lbs scraping the boards all the way through ….to Late June heat of Death Valley @ -263 ft below sea level, Rt 66…coast to coast…boarder to boarders…on both MC and CT’s in alll types of weather, including at 10k feet in the Mountains, where there is still a lil’ bit of snow….the CT for ‘me’ has been the best performing tire I was ever to put on my ride….in the wet, I can stop 4x’s faster..and take off from the lights in the rain with NO slip.

I would never put a car tire on a motorcycle. That said, beyond the possible cost advantage, I can imagine someone putting in serious miles see a plus in avoiding the downtime of perhaps several extra trips to the shop each year, to replace quicker-wearing motorcycle tires. But as you say, car tires don't belong on motorcycles that can lean. And thanks for the wonderful visual of two guys in tropical shirts, in the middle of a Cleveland winter.

Maybe the people who like car tires all live in Texas. I grew up in Western PA, and now I live in north central Texas. Corners are cause for celebration for me. Personally I think dark siders are nuts. Of course sporty driving is described as cornering at .3 Gs, so that may also help explain it. In general, I’m not impressed with excessive modification of vehicles. They’re designed as a system. At least motorcyclists are mostly endangering themselves. Some of those jacked up pickups with the giant tires just might endanger other people. Especially when they don’t pout on bigger brakes. A brake that can stop a 30” diameter tire might not do quite so well against the increased leverage of a 37 incher. And I don’t like seeing bumpers above my folded convertible top on my Fiat 500. I’m sympathetic to the argument about motorcycle tires not having a high enough weight rating. Similar issues are one reason my wife and I drive 2+2 convertibles rather than 2 seaters. The other reason is 6’4”. I’ve watched too many videos now. I can tell because I now want brown liquor. I think you actually sell that better than motorcycles.
